"A must do DUI (Detox, Unwind and Invigoration) at Kamalaya"
All of us need to recharge. Kamalaya is a perfect place and the week I spent was truly worth it. The whole setting encourages you to unwind. Quiet & slow, I got used to strolling in comfortable clothes, no phone, just a book. You can choose from many well designed programs. Mine was "Embracing Change". Massages, acupuncture and a mentor to talk to. You can makes changes to this if you want. A typical day. Get up at 7, go for yoga or meditation. Then a scrumptious breakfast and a leisurely bath. Followed by one of the treatments. Lunch at the lovely beach-side restaurant, then a snooze. Another treatment or one of the evening treatments. At dinner you can be alone or join the communal table which has many of the singles who are there. Early to bed. The food is mainly vegan, though you also have lamb chops, alcohol. Wifi only in the rooms or reception (v good). TV only at the reception. If you don't bring your laptop, there is a business centre. Great service. It cost USD 3500 for a week. I booked a basic room, but the next level is really worth it. I want to go back again.
Although this kind of holistic wellness spa resort would not have been our first or even 20th choice of holiday, my wife won this in a competition, so why not' And how glad we were that we decided to go! The setting is hilly, but a little bit of a workout to/from the 2 restaurants to wherever it is you're going next is no bad thing at all and you can always call for an electric buggy if you need one. Gorgeous views, carefully tended gardens, fantastic facilities... and all the staff are unfailingly polite and welcoming at all times. We were met at the airport by a man in an SUV, provided with chilled perfumed towels and bottles of water and the driver was more than happy to stop at a shop with an ATM on the way to the resort. Once there, we were seen to our room and found that there was soup, bread, dips, a large basket of fruit (replenished daily) and ginger tea (wonderful). Some people are there for detox and yet there is a huge choice on the menus to cater for that. We opted for a la carte, but even then we found that we were actually detox-ing by default - no cream, no red meat, lots of fish, chicken, veg and fruit all very tasty and beautifully presented. Since this holiday, we have changed our eating habits quite markedly, not that we ate all that badly before, but all the same... They even put some of their recipes online, so you can re-create dishes at home. Wi-fi is a bit pricey and not terribly fast, so there's little impetus to spend hours on your computer/phone pandering to your Facebook profile, emails, etc and, to be honest, we didn't miss that at all. The range of treatments is vast and you can pick and choose whatever you want. As part of our competition prize, we were both entitled to about 20 treatments each, although we only opted for a few, because we really only wanted to chill out for the week. The Wellness Centre staff were fantastic and agreed to let me have a couple of beginner's one-on-one Yoga sessions in lieu. Go, chill out and be pampered - you know you want to...
"A little piece of heaven..."
I was lucky enough to be able to visit Kamalaya for few days after a work trip in Singapore in October. I knew a lot of people who had suggested this spa resort but it was nothing like I had imagines. It was a little piece of heaven! I flew from Singapore with Bangkok Airways that only took an hour and a half. I was a little anxious to go alone but it is the perfect place for anyone traveling alone! You don't have time to talk to anyone as you are either have a treatment or reading a book or just relaxing which none of us know how to do in a daily life. I arrived quite late at night but the driver was waiting for me at the airport with a cold towel in the car as well as a bottle of water which is exactly what I needed on landing. On arrival the receptionist was very friendly and polite and shoed me straight to my room. My room was wonderful and comfortable - the first night was a little weird as we are actually in a jungle so the noises of the frogs etc during the night was a little off putting but you get used to it and its super normal there. I actually wanted a sea view room but i could only get a garden view room. It was fine but i recommend to get a sea view. I chose the detox programme but there are many other programmes to suit your needs. I started at 8am and finished around 8pm - jam packed with amazing massages, relaxing and nourishing. Kanita is just superb if you are into the acupuncture and into Chinese medicine thing, I had one session with Sean for Muay Thai Boxing which is an amazing workout as well as relieving stress and Steven for deep tissue is perfect if you have aches and pains. I also did one session with Wayne on "Release the Past to Open Your Heart and Be Present" It was a very intense two hours and I really enjoyed it! The food was very good and appetizing considering the diet was purely vegan. Mostly Thai based recipes with a some spice. The beach is breathe taking although its not ideal to swim at this time due to the jelly fish season. I had a steam a couple of times and the infared sauna which is ideal if you can stand the heat! All in all it was truly an amazing experience and I would go back again every year in a heart beat.
"Life-changing retreat in idyllic Koh Samui"
I've been checking out wellness sanctuaries for the past 2 years in a bid to sort out some nagging issues in life and to reset my priorities. My search took me to Fivelements Puri Ahimsa in Bali twice and finally to Kamalaya Koh Samui. The tranquility of these resorts and even for a larger scale resort like Kamalaya was amazing. I felt close to nature even as I admired the beautiful scenery and enjoyed the balmy sea breeze from the comfort of my balcony and various other vantage points within the resort. Kamalaya offers a range of programs to suit your needs and they can tailor it depending on the type of life change or healing journey that you're seeking. You're also welcome to book the room and then pick your desired sessions from the a la carte menu which was what I did. Included in the room charges is a complimentary Body Bio-Impedance Analysis, a consultation session with a wellness consultant and complimentary attendance to scheduled daily holistic activities such as Yoga, Meditation and Tai Chi. I loved attending Yoga and Meditation lessons in the airy Yoga Sala with a view of the sea. The instructors were great and patient. I definitely recommend trying out these complimentary sessions and to top up with private sessions if you'd like such as the healing sessions at the spa. Are you afraid of travelling alone' There were many other solo travellers at Kamalaya on their own personal healing journey and I think it's great to do it yourself as your travel companion may seek more exciting activities such as touring the island or hitting up the pubs which would make this a wasted opportunity. There are 2 wings with the modern wing featuring an infinity pool with a beautiful unblocked view of the sea. The gym is located in the modern wing and though I never worked out there, you'd be pleased to know that it offers the same view of the sea. The environment was conducive for silent personal introspection with a meditation cave within the premises, various salas for intimate conversations at lunch or just a private lunch. If you so desired, you could join the communal table during mealtimes to connect with other travellers - many of whom were friendly and nurturing. I made a few friends during this journey and we're still in touch with each other. Some of them are returning for their 3rd or 4th visit. The food at the resort caters for various dietary restrictions and they offer a good selection of healthy choices during the breakfast buffet. I don't have much of an appetite at breakfast so I opted for the a la carte menu. Patrons can choose to pay a fee to include all meals or pay a la carte prices. I love how they allow you to customize your experience! Though the prices are steep, this is an indulgence worth saving for if you seek a relaxing journey into self-discovery. PS: Do check out the Embracing Change and Pranayama wellness sessions and their Chi Nei Tsang therapy.
"So relaxing .. The best place to unwind"
I was so fortunate to have 3 days at kamalaya .. Even in that short time I consciously felt myself relax. It's a place where you feel cared for & nourished in every way, but still have your own space. The staff are so helpful, almost anticipating your needs.. A glass of lemon water and a cup of ginger tea always there for you Always with a smile.. The accommodation spotless & I loved the outside shower & bath.. I had a beautiful sea view.. Plenty to do, a full program of yoga, stretching, exercise classes, cultural visits, talks, boat trips... Should you want to join in.. But it's all your choice .. Steam rooms & a lovely lap pool.. Plunge pools beach ..fully equiped gym .. Lots of amazing treatments .. So then the food .. Wow .. Breakfast is a feast to choose from .. & even for those detoxing .. There is huge variety .. Lunch .. And dinner .. Well .. I enjoyed the amazing Thai flavours. Although there are plenty of alternatives . I couldn't resisit the raw chocolate cake (delicious & found that recipe on line) While the accommodation, the food & the activities are all brilliant .. It's the feeling of peace and love that comes through it all. The only down side is that the property is set on a hill .. A bit steep in places .. Getting from the beach to the restaurant is a bit of a work out!! But on the positive side.. A workout doesn't hurt at all!! I believe they do offer lifts in their buggy if requested
