"Great location in the Gaslamp district, beautiful renovation. (Can get noisy)"
The Keating is located in (arguably) the best street / intersection in the Gaslamp District in San Diego. It is a beautiful building that was renovated recently by Pininfarina. This is an important distinction, because it will NOT be for everyone's tastes (it's minimalistic, all-open layout, including the bathroom area, etc), but suited mine just perfectly. The room itself is nicely appointed, with modern, stark materials and some color accents that make it less white and minimal. The Lavazza espresso machine, the great bed, the toiletries, and the B&O TV and audio system were nice additions that really give off a European vibe. Oh, and let's not forget the European double glazed noise/temperature isolating windows. Pros: - Great location - Modern decor (loved the minimal superhero portraits in the staircase). - Nice renovation that kept some of the original building's flavor. - Fantastic amenities, including a B&O entertainment set and a Lavazza Espresso machine Cons: - The elevator is SLLLOOOOOW. If you're staying anywhere other than the second floor, which is easily accessible via the stairs, consider it will take 5 minutes to leave the hotel using it. - There is a bar / club next door that plays loud music until past midnight. They claim 12:30, it was more like 1 am when they stopped. Depending on the location of your room, it will be easily heard. - Room doors are INCREDIBLY heavy, and may be difficult to open for some. - The black-out window shades are frayed and come unslotted very easily, which makes for less than ideal operation and light blocking. - The B&O TV is fancy, but it's a bit dated now, and the remote is not too easy to operate (and weighs like a brick). - The open shower / bathroom sink, and toilet behind a non-locking sliding (thin) wall are NOT for everyone's tastes. Caveat emptor.
A heads up about the loud music at night would have been great. We didn't know the area and didn't plan on going parting on a weekday so the buzzing of the windows and loud noise until 1:30am was just plain annoying.
"Wonderful Service but very tired"
The Gaslamp District is not for everyone however interesting turnaround for those who remember it in the old days. Trendy and packed with restaurants and clubs, the crowds can be a bit overwhelming. The Keating in right in the heard of the activity. The building with an interesting history has been transformed into trendy boutique hotel. The furnishings are very modern and for the most part impractical. All of it is a bit worn and tired, the lighting is strange and there is nothing warm or cozy about the environment. The greatest redeeming factor is the wonderful staff. These people are all about making your San Diego experience the best possible and they succeed. Sooo...keep the staff and give the hotel a face lift fitting of this elegant old building.
"Great staff, great location"
Right in the heart of Gaslamp. Room had a European feel. I didn't know how to use the expresso machine, lack of bed side lamps was odd. The checkin staff were super friendly, and knowledgeable. They offer rooms w two twin beds.
"Funky, cool boutique hotel"
We were in SD for a wine pairing dinner and decided to try the Keating. Based on the reviews here and their website, we had pretty high expectations for a fun and unusual hotel. We weren't disappointed. Very interesting non-traditional hotel room, very attentive staff and great location. This ain't your typical chain hotel room!
