Service from the entire hotel staff was excellent...we were always treated as a valued customer and like a long time family friend. That is difficult to do, and the entire hotel staff always made us feel welcomed at your hotel.Comment of Y. Cole , United States the 2015-02-23
"I would stay there again"
Great hotel overall. First, the location. You cross the river and you are in Gion (15-20 min walk). Same with Nishiki Market. It is north from Kyoto Central Station so taxi will cost around $10-15 USD depending on traffic. Second, the hotel and staff. Hotel is very nice, clean, elegant and staff is very friendly, knowledgable and in my opinion superb. I would stay in this hotel again for sure and I recommend it.
"More a bus group hotel than a quality one"
An older style hotel with basic facilities and one that caters to large bus groups. As a result, breakfast is a shambles with one day seeing a delay of more than 30 minutes just to gain entry to the breakfast room. There are several restaurants in the building, but only a couple provide more than low level cafe meals, and the attitude in the two main 17th floor restaurants left a bit to be desired. There is a "bar" on the second floor which seemed a good spot for a pre dinner drink, but it was full of smokers and we were advised that there is no non smoking area! Pretty ordinary hotel
My wife and I stayed in this fantastic hotel for 2 nights bed and breakfast. It is not that modern but it exudes pure Japanese quaintness and quality. It has bellboys in uniform and they still wear little hats. The hotel was fairly central with many shops and attractions within walking distance. Our room was huge complete with 2 double beds. The bathroom had a superb shower and a nice bath. There was a large television which had a BBC News Channel plus all of the local channels.
"Slightly outdated but good"
I am not a person who enjoys outdated or older western hotels, this is because I do not like the design of the walls, carpets, building etc. However, the service was quite nice in this hotel and it was easy to travel to places (Kyoto Manga Museum). We walked into the alleyways of Kyoto to find restaurants at night and it was just a wonderful experience overall. However, I feel like this hotel belongs more in the four star category.
"Magnificent older hotel!"
Remember the grand old days of even grander hotels' The Kyoto Hotel Okura is one of those. The bellmen still wear the little hats, and when you leave, the desk staff unfurls a banner outside bidding you "Sayonara!" Very comfortable rooms, a great buffet breakfast offered,in two dining areas. But choose the one up on the higher floor. It has a terrific view of the river and the great " drinking halls" on its banks.
