Service from the entire hotel staff was excellent...we were always treated as a valued customer and like a long time family friend. That is difficult to do, and the entire hotel staff always made us feel welcomed at your hotel.Comment of Y. Cole , United States the 2015-02-23
This hotel has a faded feel. The rooms are adequate but definitely not five star. The lifts don't cope during rush times. Breakfast on 17th floor is a beacon of how not to manage a dining room. Slow service and poorly laid out. We had breakfast there twice. The first time was total chaos, with long waits to get a seat; the second time we had little trouble getting a seat but it still took a long time to queue for food. Chinese restaurant downstairs for breakfast much better as long as you accept that toast is unavailable. Part of the problem is that breakfast is not served until 0700 and tour groups with early starts are incompatible with this. Had two excellent evening meals, so not all bad.
"Looks much better than reality"
With luxury presentation this is an over rated star ****. The beds are hard, single twins, with dreadful pillows. Only one thin towel per person. It is well located but so very busy. The lifts are very inadequate with queues waiting around peak times. Breakfast is a disaster in organisation with big waits and service that is very poor. Quality is just ok. If dinning in, take care if going to bar as they charge a cover fee'... the gym attracts a $25 fee!! Never experienced meanness like this'
The location is excellent (next to subway station, shops and restaurants as well as Teramachi), the service is superb and the views amazing, however, it is now 2017 and the grand old lady is showing her age! The lobby needs a complete remodelling (too dark and 70's in feeling), the rooms need refurbishing (again the 70's!) and the practice of asking you to deposit your key (yes, I said key, a very heavy one!) when you go out and then having to waste time while the staff try to find it, is silly and outdated. I also didn't like the cafeteria style buffet restaurant on the 17th floor - terribly hot, stuffy and old-fashioned. Wake up Hotel Okura! It is the 21st century....not 1970!
"Good location and excellent service"
Kyoto Hotel Okura was in a great location and provided excellent service. They have a free shuttle to the train station that was very helpful. The hotel is also convenient to the shopping district and a variety of food venues.
"Great conference venue in central location "
Stayed here for 4 nights as a part of a work conference. The rooms were a good size with decent sized beds and large bathrooms. Breakfast was included which served both traditional and western options. Whilst I love Japanese food, it was nice to have eggs, toast and fruit in the morning. The hotel is perhaps a little dated but all of staff were friendly, helpful and spoke a good level of English. The hotel restaurants were very good and the proximity to local attractions made it a great choice. I'd stay here again if visiting Kyoto with family or friends based on the location and also the quality of the rooms. Thanks for a great stay.
