"Fantastic Day at Ravelana Attitude"
Had yet a fantastic day. Great welcome at reception, and staff throughout our day were very accommodating, from the executive lounge, housekeeping, pool and beach. Hotel is well maintained and the location is perfect. Great access to the beach and to a range of excellent restaurants on the Walk. The kids have enjoyed the swimming pool, free boat services, free activities on the beach. The staff are very friendly and helpfully. Special thanks to Richie, the F&B manager, Kreshan & his team, Vikash for entertaining the kids and Amjad the personal trainer at the sport Village. Look forward to returning there soon.
"Room for improvement"
Reached there at 15h30 on saturday, 2 adults and 3 kids (4, 6 and 9 years old) booked for two days, full bed. The room was nice, queen size bed for parents, and three bed in the mezzaning for the kids. The spiral staircase to the mezzanine was a bit dangerous but the kids loved it. There was even a gate to access the staircase in case for younger children. The bathroom was really nice. TV channels were ok although I wished they were more diverse. Wifi was free and it was a more than decent connection. Hopefully I had brought my Chromecast. The kids watched their usual youtubes and I even had the chance to watch footy streamed from my laptop. The only thing that didn't amaze us was the open buffet, there was a wide variety and all types of food, but all of them were missing that little something provided at the different restaurants which were required to be booked. We went for two days and it was very difficult since everything was already booked, from restaurants to glass bottom, so we had to manage with what was available. The staff was nice, some looked tired, but most of them were fantastic, always helping and always smiling. The kids corner staff were reluctant to take on my kids on board, somehow giving the impression that they were hiding from work, and my wife had to be insisting. We were told that beverages would be charged but at the end we didn't pay for anything additional, we drank normally. The swimming pools are awsome, the best I've seen in Mauritius so far. Could spend hours swimming and relaxing along the swimming pool. Had a very enjoyable time although it was too short to be honest, wanted to try so many other activites. Will definitely do it on some other occasion. All in all it was a good experience for everyone, my wife complained of the walking distance from our room to everything else but I didn't mind. The kids loved it.
"It's a holiday!"
Like others I am bamboozled by the negative reviews. Yes service is slightly patchy but always with a smile. I'm on holiday. If it takes ten minutes for my drink to arrive to my sun lounger it isn't a big deal. If I needed it sooner I could walk to the bar. In our experience the staff would do their best to make sure you had a great holiday. For example preparing meals for kids that they couldn't get from the buffet (eg spag Bol) , We were always seated very quickly and at breakfast the waiters were very happy to get our lattes from the bar. The resort is very clean, lunch was good - some food made to order such as pizza pasta salads and sandwiches- others food you help yourself to such as the BBQ and street food The staff were very accommodating fetching food to the pool bar area if children were sleeping etc. out of the book able restaurants kot nou was our favourite and o beach was nice too. The Italian and Chinese weren't worth visiting twice. We had no problem signing for our meals - so glad not to have a hideous AI bracelet!!!! We arrived mid October and pools were a bit chilly on first toe dip at 9am but were a pleasant escape from the heat. Pool temp not really something to complain about!! However we had to be very vigilant with our kids as the pools are not 100% safe for kids or those wobbly on their feet sloping edges and 'invisible' deep areas - that said our kids had a ball in the pool Car hire is a more cost effective option than the taxis if planning a whole day out however we used taxis (expensive!) for a morning trip to the botanics which are well worth a visit - if you hire a walking guide - entry is around 200mr entry and 50mr per adult for the guide We've had a lovely relaxing holiday in a lovely relaxed hotel - would recommend to anyone who wants to escape the rat race and is capable of asking nicely for what they need when things not quite right!!
"Beware of some of the issues before you book this hotel"
I and my family - wife and 2 children stayed at the Ravenala in October 2016, and these are just some of the issues we found that had been aware of earlier would have made me unlikely to book this hotel. The images on most booking sites and travel agent sites and brochures is of a modern looking hotel that sits sympathetically into the mauritian landscape, the pricing is also attractive when you compare to other 5 star hotels nearby on the north west coast. However these are some of the real issues we found that taken together could make for some people a very frustrating stay, during what should be a fun and stress free time away on a beautiful island. Listed below are the main issues in order of how big I think the issue is: First of all we immediately started noticing thay if you are a couple with no children you are given preferential treatments in multiple ways. Better rooms and better located rooms, they can use all the restaurants, if you have kids you are restricted to only 4 (even then it's a challenge to book them -read on later), even when you manage to book a restaurant couples would be given the better tables. All together it made us feel like second class citizens at this hotel. Whilst the hotel has several restaurants, we couldn't actually choose where we ate and when. When we arrived I was a bit aware of the issue as I had read other feedback on Tripadvisor about this issue. I therefore tried to book straightaway on arrival and was told the restaurants were all booked up so I would just have to use the buffet restaurant all week. Some times I was offered a sitting at 9:30 at night which is just not practical with young kids, or even for us adults who are use to eating at 7-8pm. In the end we manged to persuade and negotiate some slots in the restaurants, but you shouldn't have to do that. It's an awful system they have devised for booking which could leave you eating poor quality buffet all week! The rooms are more 3 star than 4 star quality. Grey interiors, dimly lit, and if like us kids are with you, their sleeping is on 2 bench's with a mattress on top. I booked a room to accommodate 4 people, so was expecting a comfortable double bed for my two children. Thye didnt sleep well and so ended up in our bed some nights, which affected our sleep, so not good! We found cockroaches in our room on 3 separate occasions, once I saw it fall out of a light fitting in the ceiling, which then made we very anxious sleeping at night with a light fitting over our bed! The table service in almost all restaurants is a farce, it almost always took around 2 to 2 and a half hours to get through the starter, main, and desert, this is not because we are slow eaters, it was because we were waiting around 30 to 45 mins between each course. Annoying at the best of times, and very difficult when you have 2 young children eating too. The buffet restaurant does a good variety of food for breakfast, but a very average dinner. The service however is even poorer, to the extent that on multiple occasions I just ended up fetching table items, napkins, cutlery etc and making the table myself - you dont expect to do that on holiday, but needs must! There are lots of staff running around, but no one present managing them so they run around in a way which looks busy but is very inefficient. This just adds to the whole frustration of eating here. I would choose a hotel where you have the option of eating at the hotel or eating out. The location of this place plus the fact they dont allow you to book just B&B means you dont have that option so have to put up with the frustration. I also felt that we got less experience of the real Mauritius by not going out more as you would by eating out. The watersports, some of which are included, is attractive, but we found they did not have capacity to enable all the guests that wanted to use them to be able to. We had long waits sometimes, or cued up for waterskiing for example, but given the hotel only pays the contractor to lay on 3 hours of watesking a day, we had to cue on two days before getting a chance. Even then it's only for 5 mins of actual skiing. Finally we did try the kids club for a couple of hours one day for our 3 year old. He's very socialable and likes to play with anyone. Unfortunately when we went to pick him up, he was just lefy playing my himself whist the "carers" and other children were doing another activity. The problem appears to be if you're child doesnt speak french, and like our only speaks english, then they don't really cater for them. All the other kids spoke french and naturally seemed to be interacting together, the carers were also more comfortable with french, and the cartoons they played were also in french. All in all there were enough issues to put me off staying here again. I would pay a bit more and stay at one of better 5 star hotels nearby.
Just back from an amazing 10 days here. Beautiful location right on the beach, great facilities and activities, plenty of choice for eating in the numerous restaurants and lovely food. The staff could not have been more helpful, always smiling and asking if they could help. Thank you all. Can't wait to come again.
