"Premier location, but not premier service"
(Full disclosure: Platinum member of Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG)). Now that Starwood and Marriott are joined, I sampled this hotel for four nights. Previously I stayed in several upper-range (4 or 5 star) hotels in Chiang Mai for some months in 2016. While the Platinum status upgraded room occurred, I was disappointed in the customer service and executive lounge. I attempted to extend my stay before arriving and was informed (through email correspondence) that was placed on a waiting list. Fair enough, but there was no followup once I checked in. Disappointed. The service in the executive lounge is not to the standards of Marriott properties in Bangkok. Drinks must be ordered and delivered by staff (no self service), and the food selection is limited. Again disappointed. The upgraded room was well appointed and serviced; the TV selection was limited (as is common in Thailand). The apparent main attribute is the hotel's location in the middle of the night bazaar.
"Heat the Pool People!"
My go-to hotel in Chiang Mai. Excellent location. Well appointed rooms with views of the city. Close to all the markets and food courts. Walking distance to the historic center. But damn, heat that swimming pool. Had to knock off a star. Used the pool to ice down my feet after walking all day.
"Big benefit to being Gold"
Made reservations using points plus cash. $63 including tax plus points. Great deal. 4 cents per SPG point. Lovely hotel with great room overlooking the mountain and town. Yea, yea the room could use a little sprucing up, but large and very comfortable with large clean bathroom. Bed was great. The night market is right behind the hotel, which for novelty was worth wandering around. The old town was just a few blocks away. We used their limo for pickup at CNX, a little expensive, but SPG guy waiting with sign is great. One night ate at the restaurant by the bar. Great WIFi for free for gold status. No lounge access or breakfast with gold, but Starbucks around the corner. Would highly recommend in right circumstance.
"A great place to stay......"
I hesitated to stay here, as I am super picky. But, this was the right choice. My family stayed here for three nights. Here is WHY I liked it: 1. Location. Directly across the street from the Night Bazaar Market with a good Food Court in the back. Starbucks is across the street if you need a coffee fix. 2. Staff. All over the hotel to assist you. English is spoken. Doi, at the Travel Desk, was very helpful. Check In was simple and predictable. 3. Morning Breakfast. Clean with a HUGE variety. Latte is severed at no extra charge, upon request. 4. Rooms. Immaculately clean. Safe. AC works well. We stayed in a corner room.
"Disappointed 5 Star experiences"
Did try other Meridien but this one a bit disappointed with their food. For a 5 star hotel in Thailand, the food were under average. I came here for a conference, the only dish can accept was the Thai dessert. Other than that all dishes in the menu were so poor. Maybe I am picky on food, but we should deserve a better quality meal from a World Class 5 star operator. But at least the location of the hotel is good. Not far from airport and just outside hotel has a night market. If you plan to stay here, eat outside. Order room package not include breakfast. Last word a plus for the staff hospitality.
