"A bit of Italy in Orlando"
We've stayed many times at the Portifino Bay hotel and would certainly go back. It's on Universal property but so serene and restful, with the bay and the boats and the hotel designed to look like Portofino. There is a large kids pool with water slide and a sand walk in. Yesterday it was largely unused. Our waiter at the pool grill said that most guests right now are from Florida. Most are adults or very small children since school is back in session. There is also an adult pool if you want peace as the kids pool can get quite noisy in summer. Many eateries are on property. We especially like Bice, the high end restaurant where we would not go in shorts, though some do. Also really good is Mama Violets; we took our granddaughters there this past summer and at ages 11 and 13, they enjoyed it. We always go to the Thirsty Fish for a drink and last night we ordered a pizza there after we went to Universal to Halloween Horror Nights. Casual and nice for drinks and snacks. There is a Starbucks and a geleteria on premises as well as other dining inside. There are also many shops on the property, from clothes to wine. The rooms are large and the bathrooms huge. Get a Bay View for the most serene view. There are of course the standard mini bar and hairdryer and safe. There is boat service to Universal or a lovely path along the water if you choose to walk. The boat ride is about 7 minutes, the walk a bit more. This is definitely the nicest hotel on property, not that the others are not nice as they are.
"Nice but not worth the price"
The main selling points of this hotel is the closeness to the Universal Parks, the fact that you can enter the parks one hour before official opening and the included unlimited express pass. Those advantages sound good at first sight, but then you'll realize, that only one of the two parks is really opening and hour early (Universal Studios) and there, only the Harry Potter attractions - nothing else. There's exactly 2 attractions in the park that you can enjoy with lower queuing times during this early hour: The Wand Experience and Escape from Gringots. The question remains, if the additional price for the hotel is worth the shorter wait time for exactly 2 attractions. Maybe better stay in a cheaper place and spend the saved money on an Express Pass' All you lose is faster access to 2 rides... Anyway: The rest of the hotel is pretty standard for this class of hotel: Multiple pools, some high-priced restaurants and some shops. Finding a package of condoms in the nightstand-drawer is the kind of experience, you don't want in such a hotel. Since the condoms were not used yet, maybe it's part of the deal' But then the package should have been full, not half empty... Also that nightstand was sticky when arrived - clean is a different thing. From a hotel in this price range I expect clean rooms with clean drawers. The fridge which is advertised on some booking sites cannot be used, since it's filled with Minibar-stuff, that may not be removed. There's no fridge for personal use. Positive: The front desk staff was very nice. The atmosphere on the plaza was very nice, when there was no event. The transportation to the parks with a boat was very comfy.
I have been in this hotel many years ago and this visit was very disappointed, al hotel is now old (not renovated). About service, is not the best, also they make most of the check ins at 4pm and the check out not late that 11am. I stay just here because of the fast past for universal parks, otherwise I never stay here 😡.
"Loved it here"
Spent 3 nights here. Lately every hotel I stay in I am disappointed or turned off in some way. I was so happy when that did not happen here! Hotel was beautiful, clean, smelled nice, kept up well and the staff was so so friendly. We arrived late at night and a day and a half after we were supposed to due to Hurricane Matthew. It was so nice to be greeted by friendly staff and they upgraded our garden view room to a bayview with a balcony. That was so nice! And since it was late and we were starving we ordered room service. The kids loved it, it was delivered quick, came with every little thing you could think of and the food was very good except for the pizza. If you're used to good pizza...don't get the pizza ;) Our standard 2 queen room was very spacious. Even with 3 children and a rollaway bed we felt we had enough room. Staying in the West wing was nice because it was close to the water taxis (which were so convenient and a pleasure to ride) and the largest pool. Breakfast buffet was delicious and worth the money, though I do wish it was cheaper, def only a one time thing for us. The bathroom was huge. Only wish is that with all the space there was a wall to separate the commode area, or a way to separate sinks from shower area. Hard for 5 people to get ready at the same time and with all the square footage I think the space could've been designed better to offer some privacy/separation. Still I'm so glad we chose to stay here. Got a great rate by buying one Annual pass park ticket. The Express pass for the parks is amazing, we waited in virtually no lines. I felt so spoiled and could never go without that! No experience with the other on site hotels but I can't imagine any better than Portofino we really loved it!
