"Some good, some bad."
We stayed at Lowes Portofino Bay for 4 nights. We had a late night check in, the staff was very nice & efficient. I wish that she had told us of all the amenities in the property. I think we would have spent more time at the pool had we known about it earlier. We needed a roll away which I had called about hours prior our arrival, I also told the staff at check-in and I still needed to call to have it delivered. We had VERY mixed experiences with the concierge, we lost a park pass and they were more than kind & helpful in getting that replaced. The next time we needed a key and the staff was unbelievably rude to my daughter. They wanted to charge is $50/hr for late check out when we called the day before check out & $100/hr when I asked the day of check out. I think that is very poor customer service and just trying to make a buck. You would think they would be smart enough to understand I'm probably going to spend $100 feeding my family of 5 at their pool bar by letting us stay the extra few hours. The club level is most definitely NOT worth it, at least compared to other club levels we have stayed in. The breakfast was pretty good with eggs, potatoes, fruit, oatmeal, pastries etc but after that the "lunch snacks" and evening wasn't worth it. More importantly, the staff was marginal at best. They didn't clear the tables so there were stacked up dishes on tables that we had to clear ourselves to use the table. They were more interested in talking to each other about weekend plans than the guests. When I asked general questions about Universal Studios & Islands of Adventure they were not very knowledgable & just gave us a park map. I also asked if we could take the walking path to the park entrance, they didn't think we could. They were wrong, we walked it back & forth each day. If you are working concierge in club level you should know that. The property is BEAUTIFUL, the pools and restaurants are worth the stay. We ate at Mama Della, it was excellent. The gelato is delicious and worth stopping for. They kids enjoyed the deli.
"Average hotel. Wouldnt book here again."
For Orlando this is probably considered a nice hotel. Having stayed at many nice hotels all over the world I can tell you I considered it an average hotel at best. What it does have going for it is it does look like a scene from Italy from afar, but instead of actually building out details in the architecture a lot of it is just painted on. The hotel is huge. Be prepared to possibly have a long hike from the lobby to your room, or just in general. The 1st room they gave us had no view so we requested another which did have slightly better view, but nothing too special. The room decor was outdated as well as the bathroom design. One sort of odd thing is there was a window from the bedroom area into the bathroom with only wooden shutters to close it off which can make for some awkwardness depending on whom you are staying with. Our room came with access to the club lounge which does serve light bites in the mornings and throughout the day. Beer and wine is available in the evenings free of charge. The club lounge is located near the lobby which as I mentioned was about a 10 min walk from where our room was so this made coming to the lounge not too convenient. The hotel is located within walking distance of Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure and there is also a boat that will shuttle you to the parks as well. There were a LOT of kids here at the time we came. If you are visiting Universal or Islands of adventure there are really only two hotel options which are right next door. This one and the Hard Rock. I've stayed at both and would recommend the other if visiting.
We had a great time and Loews Hotels are outstanding. The theme park was excellent and my family thoroughly enjoyed the rides. We ate at Emerils and the food was delicious. Didn't get to do much at city walk but will go back. The only problem we had was with the ticketing and fingerprint scanner at the main gate.
"Hotel and rooms much nicer than Disney"
We stayed here for three nights before moving to a Disney "deluxe" resort. Portofino was far and away nicer than Disney. Our club level room was huge. Two very comfortable beds, a big bathroom and a gigantic balcony with two chairs and table overlooking the villa pool. I loved sitting on the balcony enjoying a drink with the palm trees swaying in the breeze. My kids loved the villa pool over the beach pool, largely because we usually were the only ones there. The hotel is large and never felt crowded. We've been to the real Portofino in Italy and the hotel does a nice themed rendition of an Italian seaside village. It's a pleasant 15 walk to US/IOA along beautifully manicured paths. Most times we just hopped on the boats which ran frequently and quickly to the parks. The club level lounge is on the main level of the hotel which we didn't mind at all. The breakfast spread had eggs, potatoes and assorted cereals and pastries. We loved the frig filled with waters and sodas and prepackaged snacks (goldfish, granola bars, etc) to grab as we were coming/going in the middle of the day. The evening service provided enough food for my husband and me to fill up on (salads, light entrees) but there wasn't much in the way of kid friendly dinner food. Note that alcohol is only served from 5-7. We loved ducking in for a late night sweet and cup of tea before heading up to bed. There are comfy couches and tv usually playing a Harry Potter movie. The club level staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We loved have our evening turn down service with fresh towels and tidying up of the room. If we returned to Universal, I would absolutely stay here again.
"Amazing staff member"
I'll start off by saying our trip isn't even going to happen until the beginning of April. However, I felt I had to write something about an amazing staff member at the Hotel. Her name is Zahra and works at the concierge. I contacted the hotel initially about my husbands birthday and she has been extremely informative regarding every question I had, emailed me back very quickly and has gone out of her way to help me plan a surprise for my husband. I imagine our stay will be great but now after dealing with such a phenomenal staff member, I know this will be a great hotel to stay at.
