"Lovely hotel, but beware the lake..."
I stayed here for two nights for a conference and overall it was enjoyable. My room was spacious, with a very comfortable bed (though the pillows were on the squishy side) and full-size bathtub. The furniture all seemed new, or at least not worn. Yes, this hotel is huge, but the parking garage is right off the lobby, and the rest of the resort is fairly easy to navigate. There is a ferry available to take guests to CityWalk. And while I didn't dine at any of the on-property restaurants (unless you count Starbucks), the food provided at the conference I attended was absolutely stellar - which is shocking in and of itself, because professional conferences rarely have good, restaurant-quality food. Now, the bad. I wish I could give this hotel three and a half stars, because some of these are quibbles, and some are more in the way of warnings. Here goes: -My room was ground-level and right on Harbor Plaza (the central outdoor area of the hotel), which meant that guests were walking right outside my window all the time, even at night. I would have enjoyed gazing out the window at the harbor, but I shut the curtains after more than a few nosy guests tried to peek inside my room (human nature, I get it). I highly suggest requesting that you NOT be placed on the ground level. -All the Universal properties (Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, CityWalk, and the Universal hotels) are connected by a freshwater lake (which is what the ferry operates in). At this hotel, the lake flows into a harbor that you can walk into. No, really, the ground slopes right into the lake, just like a walk-in pool. Let me repeat that: this resort is inviting you to walk into a body of fresh water. In Florida. On a resort that was built on swampland. In case you aren't following: ALLIGATORS. Alligators are EVERYWHERE in Florida and I'm sure many readers are familiar with the recent tragic accident involving an alligator and a small child at a Disney resort. With that in mind, it is UNBELIEVABLE that this resort would not have roped or fenced off the harbor, or at least put up warning signs. Much like a responsible gun owner knows to assume that EVERY gun is loaded, a Florida native knows to assume that ANY body of fresh water contains alligators and to ignore any assurances to the contrary. However, I would not expect tourists to have that kind of knowledge and so the set-up is troubling. Certainly I would NEVER stay here with my toddler. -There's a Starbucks on property, and while I don't have receipts to compare, the prices seemed a bit pricier than at a regular Starbucks. -Although the furniture was nice and new, the bathroom door had deep cracks in the paint. -The hotel places ridiculous holds on your credit card. I'm used to the standard $50-$100 hold, but Loews Portofino put TWELVE HUNDRED DOLLARS worth of holds on my card. I'm really glad that I didn't have an emergency that would have required me to spend thousands of dollars in last-minute airplane tickets, because I could have maxed out my credit.
"Great customer service "
Overnight stay with the family at Portofino Bay. Took advantage of the Amex perks/upgrades- what a difference compared to other resorts. Excellent food and exceptional expertise from the hotel staff including Anthony at the front desk.
"Almost Perfect "
We've always been a Disney resort family but finally decided to check out universal and it's hotels. The facility is gorgeous and the staff is super friendly. We chose club rooms which gave us access to a private lounge for breakfast snacks and an evening reception with wine and beer. It was all really well done. Rooms are slightly bigger than the rest but nothing mind blowing. Room cleaning services were hit or miss. Sometimes we would come back to a clean room and other times it wasn't touched. You can text the front desk for issues like this but often their responses and promises were unfilled. Room and park keys were another issue. We had one key for our room, one key for the club , one ticket for park access and one ticket for express pass. Way too much to carry around! All in all we couldn't complain but for the price and hype I just expected that final bit of polish and care to make the experience 5 stars.
"Please don't do it to yourself "
Portofino Bay Hotel is the epitome of beautiful on the outside with nothing much going on inside. Aesthetically it's a beautiful hotel. It has a very romantic feel and little nooks and crannies you can literally get lost in. But that's the issue; it's ridiculously easy to get lost. Unlike most hotels PBH doesn't have an elevator in the main building you use and a hallway or two you walk down. There are wings. And these wings have no rhyme or reason as to why they were built as a puzzle. You're not simply directed to an east or west wing. You're told to go down a dark hallway, outside, back inside, up an elevator, down a hallway and up a flight of stairs. It's complicated for no reason. Or perhaps the reason PBH is so confusing is so you won't notice how empty it is. There are almost always rooms available no matter what time of day or season. This means the restaurants are very slow. Everything is a little slow. If you want peace and quiet, this is the hotel to choose. The food is overpriced but the room service is actually really good and worth the price. The shops are again, eerily quiet but it has overpriced theme park merchandise like every other hotel in town. The rooms are nice and clean. They're pretty big and the bathroom is also very large. There's plenty of space. I never did see housekeeping and the one time a maintenance guy was called he actually walked in without knocking. And yes I reported it. The employees are not the nicest. They're not horrible but they're definitely there to work and not there to add any additional touches. Check your bill before you leave, or even in the middle of your trip. I've stayed here 3 times and 2/3 there were extra charges that shouldn't have been there. Spending 20 minutes at the front desk on your checkout day isn't fun for anyone. Oh and there were no apologies of course. This isn't a resort I would choose for a family. While the pools are kid friendly, I didn't see many children around. I also wouldn't recommend this hotel for anyone who has mobility issues. The journey to your room will frustrate you. It's a very quiet hotel and a great place for a couple that wants to spend most of the trip in the room. As long as you keep up with your receipts and check with the front desk everyday about any charges, you should be okay.
