"Disappointed - would not return"
Arrived to this beautiful hotel to a friendly receptionist who offered us cava or fruit juice & explained the layout of the hotel with meal times, where the bars & restaurants etc are & gave us a map to help us find our way round The hotel itself is gorgeous & so clean !! My only gripe is that they need to lose a lot of the bushes / trees. I know it adds to the theme of the hotel, but I think more sun loungers are in the shade for at least half of the day than are in the sun. You could just see people moving around all day in search of some sunlight as you did get cold coming out the pool into shade & the loungers that were in the sun most of the day were reserved quite early. I did see the leaflets being left on reserved loungers 2 days we were there but this was after 9.40am when they had been empty for hours already. The pools are fantastic & we chose to stick to the lazy river as our daughter preferred there, although we did pop into the others while chasing the sun !! Our request for a quiet room on a high floor was granted but unfortunately the room we had got the smell from the restaurant coming in the balcony & the smell in our toilet was horrible but we do not spend much time in our room so was not worth complaining about. The real issue we had was not one good nights sleep. If we understood our neighbours language, then we could have listened to every conversation they had until about midnight every night as they seemed to shout instead of speaking in a normal tone. That along with their running squealing kids that never seemed to be told to be quiet. Just rude & disrespectful to others. Between them & the lady above that loved her stilettos so much that she never took them off ALL night we hardly slept a wink. Not totally the hotels fault but some soundproofing would not go a miss. Now for the food. Not really catering for the British in this hotel. You could see so many plates being taken away by the waiters with food on them that I'm sure it was not just us. Even my husband struggled to eat & he usually eats anything. I usually ended up eating pizza & chips from the kids section & most of the time it was cold, not lukewarm, cold chips. One night we went at 8pm on the dot when the 2nd session begun in the hope of hot food but no such luck. The last 3 days there the queues were so bad & one night there was no bread, cheese, crackers, hardly any salad & this was what we ate to try to fill ourselves up !! One day we got a teaspoon on our table for our coffee the rest of the time we had to use the end of a fork or knife. Really not impressed. Lastly, a lack of management walking around. Usually you see someone especially in the restaurant speaking to customers but if there was, they were not recognisable. All the staff we came across were so friendly apart from one waiter that liked to take away plates that you hadn't finished with ie if there was a croissant left to have with your coffee, it was quickly grabbed before you could say no !! Such a lovely hotel but sadly the lack of sleep & food just spoiled it for us & we will not be returning.
"Nice hotel but not a 5*"
We stayed here ending of September for 6 days on a half board as a family with a 7 month old. We booked the room with the private pool. This is a nice hotel but definitely not 5stars. Transfer time from LPA: We used suntransfers and it took around 25mins. First Impressions: We were greeted on arrival by friendly bell boys whom took our luggage and gave us a ticket to hand to reception when checking in. The outside of the hotel is big and clean, there were some very large cracks on the outside windows which looked very unattractive. As you enter the hotel there are lots of trees and waterfalls, reminds me of a rain-forest, very serene. However, very dark, no natural lighting, and this is the same as you enter reception. Reception is very large with lots of comfy seating, you also get a complimentary drink. The receptionist were friendly and spoke fluent English. Our room was not ready despite requesting an early check in, we did not want them to rush the cleaning so we just waited patiently. When our room was ready we received a text. The Room: The room was a decent size, I really liked the bathroom and the outside area. Since it was a pool room we had a nice shaded seating area, then an additional sun lounge area by the pool. I wouldn't necessarily say the pool is private as you can see the other guest in their adjoining pools. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the pool everyday, it had constant sun, however, this it is not the same for the sunbed. If I can recall the sun was shining around the lounge are around maybe between 12:30 or 13:30 until we came back in the late afternoon. I have seen other guest get an inflatable bed and lie directly in the pool. I was disappointed with the fact that there is no tea and coffee making facilities, no complimentary water also, no iron or ironing board. We requested for our room to be cleaned everyday and not once was the toiletries replenished. I have never seen anything like that before. Another issue was the bed, I don't know who thought pushing two single beds together will be comfortable. I could not cuddle my hubby as when I did I was left with some serious discomfort as the bed kept separating. To make matters worst my baby did not want to sleep in the cot, so she ended up sleeping with us and I was just at the edge. Since we booked directly through the hotel we were given complimentary WiFi and safe. Wifi was annoying but useful as the TV had no English shows. The Restaurant: We ate at the Marula (think that is how its spelt). Big restaurant and always has seating. Very accommodating to kids. You have the option to dine indoor or outdoor. I won't get into the food in great detail but there are good options, I wouldn't say great. I believe they have different cuisine each days such as Mexican, Moroccan. Some days better than others. If you have a sweet tooth, you wont be disappointed. Also, to add drinks are not included not even water. Water is about 2.20 Euro for 500mls. With regards to dress code during dinner guest dressed formal or smart casual. I do not know if that was the policy but guest did make an effort. For breakfast guest where a bit more casual. For lunch we wanted a change so dined out. There are a few restaurants just outside the hotel, I particularly like a tapas restaurant called El Bandaras. However, you have the option to upgrade to full board and the hotel does not offer all inclusive. The Hotel Grounds: Very large hotel, with lots of beautiful pools. beautiful scenery to take pictures for memories. It did not seem crowded which I liked. I believe they have shows during the evenings, I did not attend. Also, activities for children in the day. Outside the hotel: As I mentioned there are restaurants outside, a supermarket, a shopping center and other bits. The English outside is not as good so brush up on your Spanish lol. Please bear in mind if you have kids smoking is permitted in public places, therefore you will find that in the restaurants people are always smoking. The beach is about a ten minutes- 15mins walk depending on your speed. I found it annoying that after visiting the beachfront we were denied access to the sister hotel as it would have cut down journey time. We presented our room keys and was told it is against policy for us to gain entry. I can't comment on anything else outside as with a little baby we didn't do too much. Checkout was easy, we did this the night before with no issues. Overall this is a nice hotel with friendly staff but having stayed at 5 stars in the past, this doesn't compare
"Great Family Holiday!"
We had an absolutely brilliant time, travelled as 3 families with 6 children aged between 2 and 10 and found the hotel to be very family friendly. I suggest if you don't like to hear or see children having fun (or melt-downs!) then please choose an adults only resort!! I've summed things up below:- Positives:- A very small upgrade fee for a family room was well worth it for 2 king sized beds in addition to the sofa bed. Rooms are clean and modern (but not luxurious), beds and pillows are very comfortable. Grounds and all hotel areas are absolutely beautiful and kept spotlessly clean (with the exception of the toilets around the pool occasionally). Cocktails and drinks are of an extremely high quality and fairly priced for a 5 star hotel. Great choice of pools, well designed for all ages, something for everyone. Several lovely places to sit and enjoy evening drinks with friends and family. The styling of the hotel was wonderful, the children loved the African theme and discovering the hidden animals. Negatives Sunbed issues!!! The "no-reserving" rule was NEVER enforced. Staff would leave warning letters on unattended reserved beds but never returned to remove the towels after the 30 minutes "allowed" period. Food in the buffet restaurant was just OK, nothing special, and not always labelled correctly. It's a shame that the hotel doesn't offer the A La Carte restaurants as an inclusive dining option (like some other 5 star hotels). Waiter service around the pools was often limited and slow, and service at the bars was slow due to the lack of staff for the amount of guests. Hotels nowadays should not be charging for wifi (which is rubbish anyway) or to use the in-room safety deposit box. Despite the few minor negatives, we really did have a super time, and I would definitely recommend it to others and would even consider returning in future.
"Will not return"
Starting positive the hotel looks nice, well preserved and is clean. The rooms look good (senior suite). The pools, the gardens even the corridors are very nice. But there are issues taking the 'stars' off this resort. For starters: you have to pay for using the safety deposit box even in a senior suite. Next they charge you for wifi that is simply not working. The hotel should be child and family friendly but it's not. Visiting with children you don't want to end up in long queues for breakfast and dinner. There are two restaurants and one of them works with two shifts of seating and in between your not allowed to enter. This means you see a half empty restaurant, you wish to eat with your children (mine 5 years old and 17 months) and they guide you to the other restaurant where you need to wait in line because it's busy. Unbelievable! The food is very disappointing! The quality is of low standards, the taste is really bad and the variety is not sufficient. For children there is only chicken nuggets, French fries and pasta. There is not even a small healthy children buffet. Last, I've tried to arrange a later checkout or a courtesy room because we need to leave the hotel at 4pm. Nothing was an option. Even if you travel with small children they don't care but even worse they don't even give you the feeling that they're trying to help! I've never had a fight at a front desk but this guy who was at the front desk was tremendously rude and looked at me with a 'wrong' smile and made me feel like I know nothing and I am really stupid. So that went really wrong and we had a strong discussion during which I really raised my voice. This man was so rude but did not want to apologize and worst of all his female colleague was supporting him by saying that I was angry because he didn't give me the answers I wanted to hear. So I asked her if she saw his facial expression and his way of acting and she didn't. At the end of the discussion this guy said to me "you know what the problem is, guests always think they're right " ... I think that says enough about the level of service right' Well quite a pity, could be a great resort but is still far from it for people who appreciate a level of service (especially when traveling with children) reasonable quality of food and a happy feeling as a guest. Will not return.
"Best holiday ever"
We had a fantastic time here. A stunning hotel, large, open areas, and plenty of pools and outdoor space, so that it never feels crowded. I had expected to queue up for meals, but we never had to wait for more than a minute or two. I had requested a room with afternoon sun on the balcony. This was granted. These small details are so important! We had free wifi, as this was part of the package from our tour operator (Apollo). The buffet was very good, and there were colour paper and crayons, so that the kids were happy to remain at the table if I and my husband wanted to spend a little more time finishing our coffee. I had been worried about the sun bed situation - it is so stressful to go on holiday to relax, and not be able to get a lounger because other people have claimed them, but don't actually use them. And feel that you have to get up early and grab sun beds for yourself, and be part of this scheme. We decided to relax and not be a part of the sun bed mafia - and luckily we never had a problem finding beds. With two small kids who wanted to change pools every 30 minutes or so, we have tried every pool many times, and most of the time we found a sun bed or two. I am really happy that this didn't put a damper on our holiday mood. The beach was a SHORT stroll away (no more than 10 minutes), and started right next to the El Faro/lighthouse. We walked to the dunes one day, along the beach. We took a taxi from the hotel to Palmitos Park (around 15-16 euros), which had some very nice animal shows. We rented a car twice, from Orlando car rental just outside the hotel, and we saw Las Palmas, the mountains, and the coastal area towards Puerto de Mogan. There is still much that we haven't seen there, and if I have the chance to go back to Gran Canaria, I would definitely stay at the Lopesan Baobab again.
