"Friendly hotel, ideal for Holyrood Palace and the Scottish parliment"
My wife and I spent 4 nights in Edinburgh. Staff were all friendly and the hotel is nicely situated. The spa are was good, we used the pool, sauna and steam room. Our room was nicely furnished with bottled water provided each day. All rooms are close to the lifts. The restaurant and bar are located on the ground floor, next to reception. There was a good choice for breakfast, both cold buffet and a selection of cooked options. At dinner the menu was a little limited due to the hotel being in the process of changing in chefs, but the food was well presented and very tasty.
I had high expectations of this hotel, but was very disappointed with our stay. First of all there was paul on the front desk when checking in, he was already typing on the computer when we asked if we could check in, with out even looking up, he grunted, kept on typing and then give us the room key, no interaction with us what's so ever, found him quite ignorant. Went up to our room the room stunk of smoke, so went down to reception and asked to be moved, paul again unfortunately ! grunted handed us another key for a different room. The rooms look dated, nothing like what the rooms looked like on the internet when booked, booked a double room but all we got was two singles pushed together, the shower head had mold on it, so did the bathroom ceiling, we complained about this and were told they would get someone to come and look at it, it was still like this after our 3 night stay. We went down for breakfast and were asked if we minded waiting and to take a seat, thing is we couldnt take a seat because all the seats were taken by people waiting to get seated for breakfast, 30 minutes we waited to be seated, this happened for the next two mornings as well, there was clearly tables free but were not cleared from the previous guests, the waiting on staff were rushed off there feet, in my opinion they could not work any harder, if they employed more staff then the tables would have been cleared and there would be no wait for breakfast. Previously I've maybe waited 10 minutes for breakfast but 30 min is not acceptable. Generally the hotel looks a little run down noticed flaking paint and chipped varnish on skirting, this is a macdonald hotel after all with a reputation to up hold, I felt this hotel wasn't up to standard and certainly wouldn't stay again.
"Sorry about this" breakfast""
Firstly the positives - Great location for attractions , Scottish Parliament and palace of Holyrood , Royal mile and Arthurs Seat . Clean Looking hotel from the outside and clean inside . Phone before your stay and book car in the car park if required . Bedroom we were in very large , clean and lovely toiletries to use . We had two problems that were sorted out quickly and many thanks to Jakob who was wonderful . We did not eat our evening meal but had breakfast and this was just a let down. The main area for eating is just not large enough for the size of the hotel even when staggering the times and guests the area and staff members available can not cope . We waited for about twenty minutes to be shown to a table and then another twenty minutes for hot drink , it came with no milk and when we asked twice were eventually told "its over there in a big jug" no little milk jugs available . I asked for someone to take our hot meal order because no one came and after even longer someone came back with our order minus our daughters . To summarise be prepared to wait for breakfast it was disorganised and a bit of a farce . The restaurant manager did apologise because we were the only guests left and he knew we had been there ages . Based on the breakfast alone train the staff better to clear away quicker and be pro active in asking guests if they require anything else .
Had a three night stay and opted for the DB&B package in one of the floor 6 feature rooms. Everything was first class about the stay with a spacious room great meals and excellent hospitality. The location is on the edge of town however this makes it more relaxing and the walk to the centre is only ten mins. Spa and pool are not the largest but perfectly adequate for relaxation. Second time in a McDonald hotel and certainly not the last.
Arrived at the hotel, swift check-in process and very polite staff. Room was of a good size with all the facilities you would expect and more. Very comfortable bed, I rarely sleep well in hotels but I did at this place. The food was good, I ate the steak. If I was to point out the only negative, it would be that the portion sizes are quite small for the price, but overall good quality. Staff members around the hotel really helpful and polite through-out my stay, the bloke at the front desk even remembered my name from when I checked in and wished my a good morning each day! The hotel is in a good location only a few minutes walk from the Royal Mile. I would certainly recommend this hotel and would stay again.
