"Excellent service from staff and excellent food"
The room was spacious, plush and very warm during the very cold nights. The only gripe was the lack of a complimentary bottle of water when we arrived. The bar staff were exceptionally helpful and cheerful despite a couple of very demanding visitors, namely ourselves lol. We would like to personally thank the bar staff Charlotte, Chris, Tom, Kinga and Thomas the breakfast manager. The restaurant was served by very friendly, helpful and cheerful servers Maria, Alexandra and Dave and the excellent chefs Russell and Eric cooked excellent steaks for us. Will definitely return to the Macdonald Hotel and Spar when in Manchester which is only over the road to Manchester Piccadilly train station.
"Good hotel, feeling a little tired"
I stayed at the Macdonald Manchester for three weeks in Nov 16. The first impression was good with easy check in and polite staff, the room was a good size and everything looked right. However, my feelings about the hotel went down as I realised that it had not been maintained properly. As I did not stay over the weekends I had a different room each week: In two of the three the towel rail did not work and although I notified reception this was not rectified; in two of the rooms the advertised Bose iPhone stereo did not work and was not fixed; in two of the rooms the heating did not work properly (one stayed on permanently and one switched off after a few moments - thermostat broken on both), no attempt was made to fix these. The cleanliness was good but was let down by the 'stylish' minimal lighting, that made the rooms seem dark and unwelcoming and unsuitable for business work. The restaurant was good at breakfast but the bar service was poor and the prices exorbitant. I feel that this hotel has much potential but this is being missed by the management.
"Good stay, in a great location"
Pro: Friendly staff, prompt check in, excellent rooms with good sound proofing/ double glazed windows, bed was comfortable, heating cooling was good, anti fog mirror in bathroom, black out curtains, excellent location Con: Breakfast was pretty basic, no selection of cold meats, only white bread, limited selection of fruits, gym not open 24hrs, could do with a hand towel rail next to bathroom sink I would stay here again and recommend this hotel to others
"Good base to explore Manchester"
Stayed here a week ago with my wife for a gig and some Xmas shopping. Hotel itself was great - nice sizeable room overlooking the city and a great breakfast with lots of options the next morning. Plus helpful staff which is always a plus. The only downside is making sure you can find the car park. Not very well signed and even though I know Manchester reasonably well it took me three attempts to get down the right road.
We stayed for three nights at the hotel (Thursday to Sunday) and booked through a hotel accommodation website. We got a really good, cheap price compared to the normal rate so was looking forward to our stay. Check in was easy and the lady was friendly and informative. When we entered our room there was a distinctly unpleasant smell (sewerage). Done some investigating and discovered that the toilet didn’t flush properly. Surely housekeeping would have noticed this. Went back down to reception and advised of the problem and the receptionist said they don’t have many rooms available as the hotel was fully booked, but she found one directly across from the room we had to vacate. Smelt OK when we walked in, but the bar fridge didn’t work and the entry door security chain latch was missing. Went down to reception again and the lady advised that they may not have another room available, and the only ones left were executive rooms and we would have to pay for an upgrade. No, I don’t think so, not my problem if hotel staffs are slack. She said that she would call maintenance to fix the fridge, but if they couldn’t, then they would have to decide on what to do with us with respect to finding another room as the hotel was fully booked (except for the executive rooms). Anyway, the fridge was replaced and the security latch replaced, so we stayed put. Later on, found that he safe was locked and I could not read the instructions (way to small). It was a small safe and I found that it was not anchored to anything. It could be picked up and moved around. There were holes in the wall where it should have been secured and perhaps was at some stage. Only one face washer in the bathroom. My wife managed to speak to a lady from house-keeping who were still on the floor cleaning rooms and asked for another washer. After over-coming the apparent language barrier as to what was wanted (and bearing in mind both my wife and staff member are both English), the staff member said :what do you want another one for'” Wife “because there is only one in the room” Staff “Are you by yourself'” Wife “No, I’m with my husband” Staff member “Why can’t you share'’ Wife not impressed. There was one other time when we were short changed on the face washers. One night we rang for room service (not late, around 8:00pm). Phone rang out twice. Called reception and enquired if there was room service, she said yes but they may have not answered because they were probably very busy, so she put me through to “room service”, phone rang out again. My wife decided to go down to the restaurant to try and order some food and as she opened the door, and as luck would have it, a lady from room service walked past. Wife asked if they were busy, she said no, the phone has hardly rang. Oh well, not sure what the issue was. After all that, the food arrived in good time. We decided to have a drink in the bar before going out and found the drinks to be quite expensive. The coffee is atrocious having been made from a push button machine. Other issues were the room entry card de-activated twice and had to get it replaced. The air conditioner did not work properly at times. This was reported and maintenance never did get around to fixing it. Apart from the room service meal, which was OK, we did not eat in the restaurant so can’t comment on this. But the menu looked limited, so you would be better off walking the short distance to Piccadilly train station where there are plenty of places upstairs to suit your taste and budget. On checking out, the receptionist was very attentive to our concerns regarding our issues, but could offer no compensation other than to take down my email address for the manager to contact me when he returned from holidays (in about 3 days’ time). Needless to say, I haven’t received any correspondence from him and don’t expect to do so. While you could use the gym for free, guests had to pay £10 to use the other spa facilities. I would have thought that this would be included, but not so. Parking is £20 pound per day but is on a first come, first served basis, so if you don’t get in early enough, there are no spots left. It is behind the hotel in a secure fenced enclosure. In fairness though, our room was very spacious with a large comfortable bed, nice seating area and panoramic city views. The bathroom was also quite large compared to some hotels. But that’s all the good I can say of this hotel. In my opinion the only thing s this hotel has got going for it is that it’s close to the train station and about 10 minutes’ walk to the centre of town. It has absolutely no atmosphere whatsoever, is very bland and nothing more than a business hotel with some big maintenance and customer service issues. Based on our experience, I cannot recommend this hotel and would not stay here again.
