"True 5-star service"
There is no doubting the pedigree of Mandarin Oriental London. The service is impeccable, staff are so good that they almost anticipate what you will ask for next. Nothing is too much trouble, everything is absolutely doable. You ask for an inch, and they give you a mile. All of this, of course, should in theory be the case for any 5-star hotel of this calibre, but that is simply not always the case. It would be dishonest to say the large renovation works do not affect your stay here. There is no disruption at all, it is more an experience issue. Entering through the side entrance rather than the front door, not benefiting from the grand hallway, intended to be the first thing guests and visitors see. It feels a little bit like a rabbit warren following corridors and passages that were not intended to be used as major tributaries. But, it is important to emphasize, it is not a disruption, more a compromise. There is no issue with noise, and our comfort during the stay was not affected. The spa treatments were superb, very professional and very high quality. From the quality of the massage bed, to the music, ambience and choice of oils, it was high class. The bedrooms are classic and traditional. Criticism for being dated would miss the point I think. This is not a modern 5-star hotel, but one that has persisted from a bygone era. So there are elements that are not necessarily 21st Century, but I think that adds to the character of the hotel. Having said this, I do think the bathrooms (we were in room 717) could be freshened up a bit. They did feel a little unloved, with some peeling and filling that seemed careless. I know it is a newer hotel, but a comparison with the Waldorf Astoria, Amsterdam (see my review) would put into perspective the level of many 5 star hotels now. Mandarin Oriental is short of that level. The location is great, with Harrods, Harvey Nicks, Hyde Park amongst others all within a few steps of the hotel. Overall, a fantastic stay, although with all the renovation work going on, perhaps the owners realise to maintain these sky high prices in the increasingly competitive 5-star space, they need to revamp and address some of those little issues that make all the difference.
"Huge swimming pool and great fitness center"
The service at the Mandarin is outstanding; all the staff friendly and efficient. The swimming pool is huge and luxurious. The fitness center, especially for a hotel in the center of London, has everything you need and is a good place to workout. Some reviewers have said the Hotel is in need of refurbishment to meet 5 star luxury expectations, but I think the decor is traditional and lovely. I will stay again at this property when I return to London.
Have stayed here before and loved it but not this time. My room had to be changed after 1st night as there was a burning smell. Bathroom floor tiles were broken. Shower leaked. WiFi was paid for. The worst part the management did nothing to address my issues. This will be my last time there.
Very last minute overnight stay. Booked a suite, been upgraded to an amazing suite but even without the upgrade it would have been a great experience. Attentive staff, felt constantly welcomed. Cocktails at Bar Mandarin were excellent (big improvements over the memory I had from my previous visits), Dinner great, as usual. Absolutely fantastic stay. Can't wait for our next stay!
Firstly I want to say the service in this hotel was really excellent - we were only there for 1 night but they were friendly and efficient. I would say that the rooms are not 5 star and the walkways through the hotel during its refurbishment is not attractive or efficient. I understand that refurbishments need to be done however when you're paying for a premium hotel you expect more. Also using the bathroom after breakfast near the spa there were 6 or so cubicles - 2 of which were unusable. There is no excuse for this. Having recently stayed in the Savoy and Claridges I do feel this hotel is not in the same league.
