It s half past 2 in the morning and the reason not to sleep is a jetlag and some pain i have since weeks. My thoughts, lying in a soft and comfortable bed, on best matresses in a Clubroom of the Mandarin Oriental on floor 20 are about the last days here in Singapore, . I m german (thats little important to know to understand me better*lol*) , an elder one. In the more than 60 years of my life i had thousands of nights in hundreds of hotels all over the world. My principles and my attitude will be better understandable when reading my comments on other hotels or restaurants . Number one: I have not enough money to spend it for cheap (This is not a wisdom of mine but is from Rockefeller originate, perhaps also from someone else, this principle makes easier my life to live) Number two: when I spend hundred, I want hundred back, not fifty or eighty or ninety nine ! No: hundred! (that’s german , sorry german readers) My motherlanguage is not english, so please sorry me, I think it would be better to write in german, but this time I m u s t write it in english, please see and understand later. Arriving the Mandarin Oriental the early morning we were tired of a 28 hour trip from Europe with some complications. It s my first time in this Hotel. The taxi- door was opened by a dark looking doorman with a bride smile and he said: “welcome, Sir, to the Mandarin Oriental, You had a good flight '” – the normal greeting, business as usual…but then he said “ welcome home Sir, don´t worry we think for Your luggage, relax!” and with his bride smile I felt really and heartly welcome. We was brought to the elevators, I heard some instructions to the luggage-carriers and we were send up to the Club-Check-in where the reception was not less friendly. Not the processing of the check-in, the documents or creditcards, but our well-being were the focus, we were immediately asked if we wanted a refreshment, were accompanied to the club and there with champagne and another smile welcomed. Great and quickly service by a young Lady who did everything fine with a : SMILE. (I would not be German enough if I did not have any improvement suggestion to round off: a small fragrant refreshment towel to wipe the dirt and sweat of the trip a little bit - that I would be a hope for the next time) Booking the room we asked- if available -for a early checkin- the Hotel promised to do their best: The room was available! After receiving the keys, brought with instructions to the elevator, on the twentieth floor we met two broadly smiling carriers ( later we give them the Nickname :” Indian brothers” as we believe that these both must be brothers ;-) who were to meet us a few times, always together, always with a smile and some nice words of greeting. They turned around again, took us to the room (I thought, probably because of the tips), opened the door and one of them said , looking into the room: “what a nice Room You have and just look at what spectacular views you have here”- It sounded as if he himself was always surprised again and again by this wonderful sight on the Marina Bay of Singapore. Last year we had a stay in the Hotel beside which is the Ritz Carlton Millenia, follow my comments on that Hotel on Tripadvisor and understand the difference. Same view, same big 5*Hotel, but a completly other feeling. The nights in the Mandarin Oriental were good, quiet, nothing to hear from neighbours, the asked privacy was full respected. All our extra wishes for pillows, towels and much more were always fullfilled quickly and: friendly from all the staff: the roomservice asked with a devot smile, if there could be anything he could do for us, the technic engineers we needed once to fullfill wishes were quickly and helpful and : friendly, with a SMILE ! The room- attendant was very special, very clean, quick and ruthless service- special thank also to him. Breakfast we took at the Melt restaurant, we did without the Chamapagne which we could have in the Oriental Club, a lot of various and international fresh and nice- offered food, attentive staff, a good start in a new day. And also there we had a special experience: an attentive waitress Wei Meng spoiled us properly, she had not only our coffee under control , the orange juice she had freshly pressed “only for us”(Joke!), the plates attentively cleared and finally came, unsolicited, for everyone of us a half, wonderful mango, the "we absolutely must try"- not ordered, but eaten. Maybe this is not very unusual, but the way she did, the way she treated us gave the perfect feeling of being home. In the Club we were always greeted with our name, Andrew helped us to look for a lost cap at Changi-Airport, it was not found, but by his sincere sympathy the loss was only half as heavy. Using the nice pool with a view on the Bay same procedure: friendly greetings, attentive staff. Only the lifeguards are looking strong, but may be they are too concentrated on the guests lifes so a smile can disturb. ;-) Am I to sentimental this time' Have I forgotten all my principles on which I otherwise judge' No! I have got more than the hundred back I paid (or was it thousands':-) , because of all the honest smiles, the open looks eyes to eyes, the ever-present willingness to help and make the guest feel comfortable- that makes the difference to a lot of the hundreds Hotels I visited in my life. The only reason that I write in my bad (D´) English is that I want that all those who deliver day by day with a lot of heart their service to the guests can understand this. I'm sure someone must be there who teached You to love Your Jobs, but most of that what You do came out from Your own. Thanks for being a guest at Home at Mandarin Oriental. If readers of this comment have impression that I m too sentimental: You have right! I m touched by the people of Singapore. The People of The Mandarin Oriental. Hope to come back and meet You again.
"Disappointed with the club lounge"
Hotel location is good, concierge very helpful, room smelt musty, some of the club lounge staff, the more junior members need to understand that we are the guests, overall the service and food in the lounge was not a patch on the KL MO.
Room is spacious. Staff is so so, typical Singaporean style, polite but "cold". Nice swimming pool. Didn't try the breakfast but according to hubby it's good one. Walking distance to esplanade and Merlion. Definetely will come back again next time.
"A simply stunning hotel"
Absolutely amazing hotel in every way! Must stay at least once if in Singapore! Perfect service. Immaculate attention to detail. Gorgeous soft sheets, amazing bath. Very comfortable room. Excellent location, fabulous views, service at pool over and above - Food in Club Lounge exceptional. The staff were out of this world, always smiling and happy. From the pool side staff to concierge everyone was so attentive and beyond pleasant. The buffet breakfast was delightful, great variety. Very accessible to major areas. Easy to get a cab to go anywhere. The location of the hotel is perfect very close to the marina bay shopping mall and the esplanade theatres. We loved everything about this hotel.
Having stayed often at the Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong we decided to book the Singapore version. While it is not in quite the same league as its Hong Kong sister, it is considerably less expensive, very comfortable, with good facilities and excellent service. We would stay here again.
