I had the recent pleasure of staying at the Mandarin Oriental, attending a conference it was hosting. I have previously stayed at its Las Vegas and Boston establishments. Check-in was efficient and very friendly, with the employee taking the trouble to accompany me to the lift. Room was spacious and clean. Breakfast choice was very good. All the housekeeping staff greeted me as I walked down the corridor to and from my room. As was my experience of its other establishments where I have stayed, the distinguishing feature of this hotel when compared to other hotels is its level of service. As far as the positioning of the hotel is concerned, it was ideal - in a quiet area, an easy 10 minute walk to the National Mall (to a point roughly midway between the Washington Monument and the Capitol). There is a railway track that runs near the hotel but I can't say that I heard any noise as a result of that. I have no suggestions as to how my stay could have been improved and would definitely stay here again.
"The price prevents excellence"
No doubt this is a very good hotel in an excellent location that could not be bettered. However, the extreme price tag and lack of a few minor amenities, plus a very expensive yet average breakfast make it impossible to rate it excellent. Spa is average as well.
"mixing relaxation with business"
Excellent hotel. One big drawback if you are picky about sheets. They are a 5 star hotel but still use flat sheets for the bottom sheet. It drives me crazy--when you move around they come up. Very nice sheets thick cotton--that doesn't breath. impeccable cleanliness. Close to the mall. And, for those wanting a feel of New England in DC--the wharf is very close. My wife and I walked down to this open air fish market area. A few vendors also sold freshly cooked seafood...
"the best in DC"
the best hotel in Washington DC. the entire staff is professional and kind, the rooms are immaculate and needless to say the hotel is beautiful and sparkling clean. We have never been treated so well!
The rooms, bathroom and service were excellent. The rooms are very spacious. The swimming pool is great. One small negative is that the only place to eat within walking distance is the hotel restaurant, the Muse. The restaurant is fine, but it would be nice if there is a less formal café available.
