I booked this hotel because of its location and discount offer I had. Great location, one block from the White House and the Mall. It has a self parking garage for additional charge.(valley as well). Large lobby and a lounge bar, multiple meeting rooms. Great for business meetings. The restaurant is terrible, overpriced, the wine list is very short with average to mediocre selection. When it comes to ordering wine, my personal approach is to look first at the prices and find the middle, then choose one. They have ran out of my first choice, the second as well. I sampled one of the lower priced, and it was not drinkable. The upper tier was prohibitively and unreasonably expensive, about four five times the corresponding wine store price for the same bottle. It's customary to charge times 3. The food menu was not exciting. We had to take the safe choice, burgers. The server was very pleasant and very nice. The fact that the restaurant was not busy at all, I guess, gave her an opportunity to dedicate her undivided attention to our table. The hotel room was a bit smaller than average american size hotel rooms but very comfortable and modern, the bath room as well, very clean. I had an inner room, looking at a brick wall but it was very quite, probably a better option considering the busy traffic surrounding the building. There was a small refrigerator in the room. There was a coffee maker as well, I did not use it. There is a Star Buck in the lobby. The Wi-fi is complimentary for the loyalty program members, the speed and the connection were very good.
"No bottled water'"
The hotel is huge, well located, and very clean. However I never got complimentary bottled water in my room, which was surprising. There also wasn't a mini bar so I couldn't even pay for bottled water. The breakfast buffet at the M Lounge was very good. I am a Marriott gold member, so I was very surprised when I got to my room and it was looking out on an internal courtyard. That was pretty bad - couldn't open the curtains at all during my stay bc people would be able to see right into my room.
"To Paraphrase Seinfeld-"They know how to take aReservation but not how to Hold it""
My wife attended the IWIRC (International Women's Insolvency and Restructuring ) Convention starting this past Wednesday at this hotel and I accompanied her. We arrived at noon and were told the hotel was overbooked (mind you not that the room would be available later) and were "Walked" to the Marriott in BETHESDA a good half hour drive in no traffic. They claimed that there were no other rooms available in the District. Yes we got a free room and some transportation money but the whole idea of going to a conference is to mingle which is more difficult if you have to commute. My wife was livid. I wasn't and understand that occasionally this happens until I found out that 60 rooms for people at the same meeting were also walked. Its not that they overbooked by a few rooms-they overbooked by alot and figured they'd bump people who had the "meeting rate" and frankly I figured they thought that moving a group of women was easier than another group.. The hotel is nice, the staff was friendly and its pretty new but anyone booking a meeting or convention there would be wise to consider other alternatives.
"Nice convention hotel in central location but challenged by construction"
The Marriott is a very large hotel that caters to conventions. The location is very central making it easy to get to all the key spots. The rooms are spacious but simple. The hotel was multiple restaurants that serve decent food. The staff are friendly and helpful. Only issue is that there's construction across the street and if you're in a room facing that side, expect a 7:30ish wake-up from the construction crew. Looks like this issue will be going on for quite a while so I would recommend a room on the other side or a room facing the courtyard.
"Great Wi-Fi, Not So Great Sleep "
Initially we were given a room on the 12th floor near the elevator. One of the elevators makes a really loud noise every time it goes up and down, so on a busy Saturday night we kept being woke up. Later we heard someone else complain about the noise, so I'm not sure why Marriott has not fixed the elevator. We were able to move to a new room, but unfortunately we now were facing construction that was really loud starting at 7am. Since we were working remotely on west coast time, this meant we were woken up before we wanted to be up. The bed in the new room was also worn out and sagging in the middle, unlike the comfortable bed in the initial room. Since we were working remotely, the fast, reliable Wi-Fi was great. As Gold members, we also enjoyed the executive lounge and the significant amount of food provided. The service from the staff at the door (for getting taxis, etc.) was good. The location was just Ok for touring. Would have liked to have been closer to the mall, but the closer Marriotts had poor Wi-Fi reviews. A couple other odd things...we needed a light replaced in our bathroom and the housekeeping staff must have ordered service because someone just showed up to fix it. After he left, there was bits of plastic all over the bathroom floor and counter. Also the room service doesn't bring you a bill, so you have no way to provide a tip unless you have cash. Some things are starting to show wear even though the hotel is only a few years old - like I thought the foot rest legs were going to fall off, there was a weird brown stain on the bathroom counter in the first room, and the bathroom door handle was a little broken.
