"The art to pamper"
This year we decided to book our yearly diving trip in the north-west of Bali in the Matahari Beach and Spa resort in Pemuteran. The resort happened to be one of the best ones we experienced in the last 10 years going to Indonesia and Malayasia for diving. Great hospitality, a truly fantastic kitchen(!) and a top quality resort with very nice bungalows in a beautiful tropical garden, very well maintained and bringing us in a peaceful atmosphere. If you have already been to diving sites such as Wakatobi, Lembeh Street, Bunaken, Sipadan-Mabul, Raja Ampat,.. the diving experience, mainly at the natural reserve Menjangan, was perhaps not at that same high level although its marine fauna incorporates one of the best-preserved coral reefs in the area. We would definitely recommend this resort.
"Busier but better than before!"
This was our third visit to Matahari, and we were pleasantly surprised by our experience this time. The fabric of the place has been maintained to a high standard - the rooms are still very attractive, the spa beautiful, and the gardens even more luscious. The beach restaurant has been extended and offers a great lunchtime menu, and the main restaurant has more 'local' food on offer, though it is still a little 'western-heavy' to my mind. The Babi Guleng BBQ was a great success, and we were very pleased to have caught it!
This is one of my favorite place in Bali. The place is very relaxing and all the staffs are very kind. We got very complete treatment when we were there. Ms. Ayu was very friendly and cheerful and professional.
"Relaxing Paradise "
This hotel is hardly to be compared with a "standard hotel",but more with a private paradise. First of all, if you want music, action, activities: that's not the place for you. If you want relax, silence , private, peace: that's paradise. It is a small hotel (ca. 25 rooms) where, although fully booked, you almost think you are alone. It is on the north part of bali (this is the only drawback: to get here it takes ca. 4 hours transfer from the airport) with a small village and temples around, but otherwise deeply into nature. The hotel itself is a garden with EVERY element (inclusive the beach shower) build up in pure bali style... Like would be a temple or a private traditional palace. The stones are ages up, everything is surrounded by lotus flowers pots... The rooms are hosted in bungalows with a private patio immerse into nature and they are INCREDIBLE (with an open air shower in the form of a Bali daemon). There is a beautiful beach (lava black sand). Activities are available on the beach (small golf court, ping pong, beach volley, diving center... ),other activities around the hotel (cooking lessons, yoga lessons, spa, mountain bike... ). You can rent (rather cheap) a car with driver to go around. There is a beautiful pool (not so big, but big enough). There are 2 restaurants (one "main" one, one one the beach), but they offer the same things, just the location is different. The breakfast is at buffet in the main restaurant. It is very good, and although not that huge, I think, everyone would be happy with it (international and bali specialities). If you have half board you get for dinner a 4 dishes menu where you can choose between different 2 starters and 3 different main courses (fix 1 soup & 1 dessert). Without half board you can choose from a la carte menu. (we never have lunch, but I guess is the same). Everyone is kind, nice and helpful. Some notes now: * NO TV in the room (there is a tv room, if you really need one), but perfect Internet connection everywhere in the hotel * Bikes are big. If you are smaller that 1,65m you might have problems. * the beach is beautifully set in a "tree park", giving you (together with the sun umbrellas) beautiful shadow.... But if you want 100÷ sun... in the afternoon you will not have it anymore on the beach, you have to move to the pool (which we did) * if you "like it hot" that's the place for you: ca. 31 Celsius daytime, 29 Celsius at night, 31 Celsius see water temperature, 35 Celsius pool water temperature :-) * we snorkel a lot but we do not dive. Do not trust sites telling you you step in water and you snorkel /dive: that's simply not true. You step in water and you have sand: period. There is a local riff which is ONLY for divers (riff too deep for snorkelers). You can reach it daily from the dive center (10 min boat away) . There is the menjangan island. You can reach it daily from the dive center (30 min boat away). This is good (although not al the spots are spectacular) for both divers and snorkelers. The dive center offers 1/2 day trips to the island (2 spots per trip). In every trip you well go to 2 different spot with a fix calendar and a map of the spot (so that you see if the spot is "mostly for divers" or for snorkelers too).
We were originally up north to stay at the Zen Resort, which turned out to be overpriced and extremely mediocre. We booked Matahari last minute and were SO glad that fate led us to this gorgeous resort! We enjoyed everything about the Matahari - the peaceful black sand beach, the beautiful woodwork in the rooms, the kind and helpful staff, the wide range of food options. Snorkeling was a treat, as was the Spa. It's very reasonably priced, and feeling that we were getting a good value for our money made it that much more enjoyable. Everyday we enjoyed the beauty - both natural and manmade - that surrounds Matahari. This team prides themselves on being the only 5-star resort in the area and it's clear that the staff is very proud to work at such a fine hotel.
