"Good hotel with helpful staff"
We stayed at this hotel cause it was easy to get everywhere either by metro or taxi. The metro station was less than 5 min walk or if you prefer the hotel doorman would call a taxi. Copacabana beach was 10 min walk. We booked our trip to Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf mountain at the hotel reception. The visit was very good with an english speaking guide. Our room on the 10th floor was adequate. The only thing missing was shower gel and the lotion was cheap quality. The water pressure in the shower was good. The breakfast had a good selection. We had dinner in the hotel once which was good. We had difficulty ordering room service as the staff could not understand english. The swimming pool was small with few loungers and seating but it was enough as most of the guests went out.
"Definitely not 4 Star"
We loved Rio but it was despite this hotel and in no way because of it. The positives about this hotel are the location- near to lots of things and other bars and restaurants are in easy walking distance - and the fruit was good at breakfast. The website description is exaggerated or not accurate in many respects. As a result a large group of us felt let down and disappointed. Our room on the 5th floor wasn't very clean (questionable hairs on the shower floor), it was also in dire need of renovation, updating and a new bed. The single glazed windows didn't bother us too much as there wasn't a lot of street noise. However the bed was very hard, there is only bedside lockers with one tiny drawer each, there are no hooks anywhere, including in the bathroom to hang a robe or something similar, the walls are paper thin so you hear even conversations next door, the plumbing on the lower level floors was very noisy with a bang every time a toilet was flushed, the shower door didn't close properly resulting in a wet floor, the mirror looked like it had come from a garbage dump, the toiletries felt like cheap stuff, the bathroom door itself was in very poor condition, (all evidenced in the photographs) although on a positive note - the shower pressure was good. We ate only the breakfasts so can't comment on the other food. The hotel had been given notification that I was coeliac and require gluten free food. When I asked the restaurant manager if they had anything gluten free at breakfast I received a very curt and not at all friendly 'NO'. The fruit juice was watered down and the coffee was bitter. Fortunately there was fruit although limited variety and every day there was scrambled egg and yoghurt. It got boring. The staff in the restaurant appeared unhappy and were going through the motions more than actually caring. The reception staff didn't speak great English but generally tried to be helpful. The bar was too bright, soulless and empty to bother trying to be in it. The gym is tiny and the swimming pool is too. With only 5 loungers and about half a dozen chairs to hundreds of guests, the rooftop area was woefully inadequate.
"More miss than hit"
The best part about the hotel was the top storey swimming pool, with helpful staff. Thereafter matters went down hill. I thought the l location was ok, four blocks form Copacabana in a safe enough area. Everything was very basic, though our room was cleaned well every day. Food was dismal. This hotel has potential to be very good, but needs a serious overhaul.
"Average. Average. Average."
Rooms small but ok. Hanging space minimal. Shower-room small but ok. Small towels. Bar small, not ok. One barman for 100 odd people, doesn't work. No room in the bar so took our drinks to the lobby, asked to move, drinks not allowed in the lobby. Breakfast ok. So why have I given it 3 stars. Because it wasn't poor, it was just ok
"Great location but dingy and disappointing"
The location was great and the pool small but nice. The room was dingy, musty and shabby with cheap, uncomfortable beds and bedding. My fingers went through the threadbare sheets. The bathroom was grubby and in need of refurbishment. The glass door on the shower was out of alignment and caused a huge noise every time we used it. Breakfast was fine. We were unable to use any electricals since our room Only had Brazilian sockets - other rooms had US sockets - and the USB socket did not work. I understand others in our party had bigger rooms with good views but ours looked into the street. If you book this hotel ask for a room on the higher floors, at the back, with views of Christ the Redeemer statue but don't expect comfort.
