"On its way down"
The hotel is relatively clean, the ac works, rooms don't smell like smoke, and the hotel is in a good location. However, the hotel needs renovated everything is pretty much shabby. The hotel staff especially the front desk could use some training in how to be more proactive and accommodating.
"Central location room shabby"
This is an older hotel and first impressions were that it was a bit shabby but it was comfortable for the 4 nights we stayed. We booked a family room but we ended up with a very old and uncomfortable roll-away bed, making the room very crowded. We had assumed that breakfast came with the room but were disappointed that it didn't and we were offered a family discount where children eat free. We had to apply every day for this discount as the vouchers were not offered in advance. The room was too hot and we could not adjust the temperature using the thermostat in the room. Staff were helpful and readily hailed taxis and gave advice when required. Chinese translations on a card were very useful and we were lucky to have international hospitality students working at the hotel with fluent English. Easy walk to the entry gate for the forbidden city but a long walk back from the exit gate (one way only through the tourist attractions). Not many eating places close to the hotel but there was one very Chinese restaurant not too far away. We also had fun navigating the Chinese subway as there is an entry point (Line 5) very close to the hotel. Highly recommended for the adventurous to get to Lama Temple (4 stops north) and the Pearl Market (4 stops south). Lots of stairs! Even though the hotel was a bit of a disappointment we really enjoyed our stay.
Stayed here about 9-10 years ago and decided to try again. The rooms were great, not so keen on the Italian restaurant in a French Hotel, great bar with one of the most amazing barmaids called Daisy who really looked after us and was so charming. Breakfast had a few problems however we met the Resident Manager Jean Philippe Couturier who was really helpful and sorted all our little problems out. Hope to be back soon.
"Centrally located hotel that's in need of cleaning"
The check-in and executive lounge were nice here. I got a room on 18th floor, which had a good view and soft bed. I found the room smelly and the windows weren't cleaned in ages. The bathroom was the worst place: cold water came out from the ceilings and there's mold about everywhere. Concerning the breakfast: I found it odd that rice comes with pork by default. I asked in the breakfast room and lounge if they have rice without pork, but go a no. For an international hotel, I would expect a more international approach. Concerning the dirt, smell and mold, I would recommend staying here.
the one thing that is good about this place is the location. located walking distance to wangfujing street were the action is but somewhat away from the noise. located in front and beside the 5star hotels. check in was a bit off... ive made a non-refundable booking two months prior to my stay, meaning it is prepaid already so i assume they've take note of my request but viola... they failed to take note of it or they just ignore it. ive requested for a higher floor room with a view considering ive booked one premium room but they gave me intially a standard looking room on the lowest part of the hotel... i guess they are trying to trick me but i complained and was later transferred to a higher floor but a oddly looking view. room... i did complained about the a/c, which i cant decipher how to operate, so they send someone who cant speak english... so your guess is the same as mine... no resolution about it. overall, nothing fancy to rave about. breakfast... ample variety of western and chinese cuisine. im quite satisfied with it actually. staff... improvement needed in the area of communication... it seems not everyone can converse well in english considering the hotel is under a european based hotel management.
