"Stunning value and service"
Small room but great views. Very clean and, although there is no room for a chair to sit, very comfortable. Fabulous shower with stunning views from there and from bedroom. All you need. Fridge restocked daily and free. Free happy hour (2 hours!). Most helpful reception staff I have ever come across - even in 5 star hotels. They can't do enough for you, and always with a smile. Laundry being repaired while I was there, so they took our washing and returned it that evening, well laundered and pressed; no charge. Fantastic value. Interesting location. Not as convenient as being on the other side of the island, but the hotel has an excellent transport leaflet. Buses to all parts of the island leave from practically outside the door, and are very reasonable. Taxis easy to get and staff very helpful with this. Would not hesitate to recommend the Ovulo, Aberdeen Harbour. (Note: the other Ovolu in Aberdeen does not have quite such a good location or views).
We stayed 5 nights at the Ovolo Hotel prior to boarding a cruise ship for our return trip to Brisbane Australia. Michael, Eric and Brandon had already set up a private transfer from Hong Kong Airport to the Ovolo which was well worth to cost as it was so convenient. I had not been to HK previously and, not knowing what to expect, was a little surprised when the transfer vehicle pulled up out the front of the hotel. The area is quite drab and grubby looking and I wondered what we may have gotten ourselves into. Once we had unloaded our luggage and checked in our fears were allayed as the hotel is very modern and pristine clean. We were welcomed by Eric who told us about all the "freebies" that The Ovolo provides. FREE BREAKFAST, FREE MINI BAR and FREE HAPPY HOUR between 5:00pm and 7:00 pm. It is true, as I had read on Trip Advisor before leaving Australia, that the rooms are small. Eric and Michael arranged a free room upgrade overlooking Aberdeen Harbour which We thought was a nice gesture. The boys were a wealth of knowledge and nothing was too much trouble. From information about buses and trains to touristy things to do, they knew it all and were happy to help out. If you plan to do a lot of sightseeing the Hotel is a little "off the beaten track" We would recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to HK as it is wonderful value for money.
"Good Value for Money"
We were a family of five and had a good stay. This hotel is a great choice. Away from the city center but well connected by public transport. The public transport guide created by the hotel and available at reception is a great help in case you are planning trips to any of the famous places. Brandon Lim, manager at the hotel needs a special mention for demonstrating great passion for customer service. Brandon you rock ! The little things made the difference. The in room goody bag, the free drinks, fruits and nibbles, the toiletries in the bathroom and free mini bar (soda, juice, water and beer) which are replenished every day.
"One of the best"
Just returned from a 7 day stay at the OAH and cannot emphasize enough how much we enjoyed our stay! The staff are a true credit esp. Poly and Hei, but all the rest too. They all spoke excellent English and provided top notch service; from directions to eating recommendations. The hotel amenities such as the included mini bar (soda, juice, water and beer), happy hour with light snacks (popcorn and chips/salsa, etc.) which included top shelf alcohol, and fortified continental breakfast (Danish butter, German yogurt, Italian bottled water) only added to the enjoyment. The location in Aberdeen is on the quite side of the island, but there are plenty of restaurants, HSBC bank/ATM, and Aberdeen Center mall are all within 5 minutes walking. While there are few tourists, people are friendly and helpful; safety was never a concern. There are excellent public transportation stops within steps of the hotel making reaching any spot in HK a breeze in 45 minutes or less for <$1 each way. The rooms are clean with comfortable beds and TV with English channels. The only complaints would be, that while on the 16th floor there was still some road noise from the street below-with the addition of double pane or sound proof windows this would be resolved. Also while there was free use of two washers & dryers, one of each was out of service during our stay. Not an issue with a little planning and patients. Would not hesitate to visit again….
"Quirky but impractical"
Call me old fashioned but whilst I really like quirky, the initial appeal of the design of the rooms in this hotel quickly palls as the choices made appear both impractical for the cleaning staff and annoying for the guests. In the bathroom of the superior harbour view rooms I'd replace a hinged door with a sliding one; there's simply not enough space for the former. I'd move the door to the far end of the room and switch the lavatory and shower; there's no point having a shower adjacent to a window if the glass is frosted. In the sleeping area whilst it's fun to wake up with the harbour at the bottom of your bed it's a pain manoeuvring all the way round it and swerving round the TV if your side is the far side. Turn the bed round 90 degrees and instead of a TV hinged on the wall fix it to the newly created space on the bathroom wall. Another thing, is double glazing unheard of in HK' The noise from the traffic below travels up as far as the 'teen floors. Ensure cleaning staff check the bulbs every day. There's no point having all that individually controlled lighting if the bulbs have blown. Moreover, double glazing would insulate the room in both summer and winter, reducing heating and cooling costs and would also cut out the drone of the cars, buses and lorries below. Just a few suggestions for when the rooms are refreshed. Probably a good idea to correct the helpful info in the room too. The happy hour is 5-7 and not 6-8 as mentioned in the blurb. Apart from all that I like the Ovolo concept, it's just the execution which could be improved.
