This hotel outdid my expectations. I stayed for two nights and I had a much bigger room than I had expected (it came with a full kitchen), and was clean, modern and comfortable. I found breakfast to be good but an expensive options. The location was also good. I would stay here again.
"Good for a long stay. Not great for business."
This hotel is quite basic but good if you are in for a long stay as rooms have full kitchens and in-suite laundry. Not ideal for short business trips as amenities are limited. No breakfast in the hotel, no room service during the day. Location is good just off Yonge Street.
"Think international chain well past its prime, not boutique"
The Pantages is a perfectly reasonable place to sleep in a central location - the bed was fine, the fixtures worked, no concerns about security, and so on. My complaint is not that it is inadequate, but rather that it presents itself as something that it is not. The hotel would like you to think that it is an upscale boutique hotel. It does not come across as that at all. It feels, instead, like a standard international chain hotel that is 25 years past its prime - the furniture is very dated, the TV is old, the bathroom the same. The management feels improvised - I don't mind the fee I was charged for wifi, but then it's annoying to see the in-room amenities book list complimentary wifi as a feature. It's nice that there is a gym, but not very useful when both treadmills are broken. I'm perfectly happy in mid-tier hotels and some of my most pleasant hotel stays over the years have been in very basic places... the Pantages is fine for spending the night in central Toronto, but I'd much prefer that it focus on getting the basics right than that it try to project itself as something it is not.
My wife and I spent a night here on March 9th, we arrived early and were told to come back in an hour to check on status of our room. Pella the woman at the front desk was amazing, the parked our car for us so we wouldn't have to pay for parking. And 1 hour later we had a room, we will definately be going back!!!
"First Visit But Probably Not the Last"
I recently stayed at this hotel, as I was seeing the musical "The Bodyguard." I booked on-line and opted for the event rate. It is a discounted rate and it also offers half price valet parking, free WIFI and a later check out (1 p.m.). I opted for the room with the queen bed. It was quite roomy and included a kitchenette, including a toaster, Keurig coffee maker, stove top, fridge, and even an apartment sized washer/dryer (in one of cupboards). I didn't really need it, but it was nice to know it was available. The washroom was roomy and clean. The only challenge was that the toilet was a bit lower than I am accustomed too (not really a complaint, but an observation). There were ample towels. Outside of the washroom area, there was a small make-up area that one could use. The t.v. was of a good size and had a good picture. The room was really nicely laid out with a desk, ample drawers, two night tables and two lamps. The bed was comfortable. It was quiet and I had a fairly decent night's sleep. Not only is this hotel really close to the Ed Mirvish Theatre, but it is situated close to a variety of restaurants, all within walking distance. The valet parking was also a bonus. I would definitely return if I were seeing a play at the theatre. One caveat is that the room service menu starts around supper time. There is no breakfast room service, but a restaurant on-site. However, I believe breakfast ends at 10 a.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. on weekends. I preferred to take advantage of the late check-out and I had a nice rest.
