"Rocky Start but Not a Bad Stay"
I chose this hotel because it was across the street from the venue I was visiting. I could see the venue from my window. However, when I got there it was after 2am. I told them through getaroom.com that I required a late check-in. However, my efforts were for naught. They had an oversold situation and gave away my room. I was quite annoyed because it was after 2am. I have to admit that the front desk staff did work quickly. She got me another hotel and a taxi to take to the hotel. They paid for the taxi and the hotel room. I had two nights, so she told me to return the next day for my room. I asked if they would cover the taxi back and she said yes. She said they would refund me for my first night and add a free breakfast to my room. So it was annoying. We drove through the gay clubbing district to my new hotel, which looked like rooms were rented hourly. The guy at the front desk of the new hotel asked me what happened. I said, they gave away my room! Bed at the new hotel was rock hard but the room was actually interesting. It was literally an old apartment. The next day, I took a taxi back. I told the taxi driver that the Pantages was paying for it. After some debate with dispatch, he agreed to take me. I guess he though I was going to stiff him. But we went right inside the Pantages and I was honestly surprised. They knew the situation and they paid the cabbie right away so he let me have my suitcase. It was around noon and they had a room ready for me on the top floor. It was a corner room and by that I don't mean an elegant corner suite. I mean it was in the corner and it had 50 million angles and walls. The toilet didn't flush well. But the water was hot and the bed was comfortable. There was a desk and a TV in a media chest and very dangerous looking mini bar across from the bed that I did not touch. But it was a comfortable stay for one night. I was in and out, no problem. The staff was friendly. I liked the area. It's across the street from the mall, so all your fast food options are there. And late at night, 7/11 is still open and it's a couple blocks away. A lot of homeless people in the area, though. The next day I talked to the manager. He said he would refund my first night, like I was promised. I didn't get the free breakfast because I slept in. A couple days later, I got an email that I had been refunded. So I have to appreciate that they did everything they said they would without me taking them all to task, which I was prepared to do. They just did it. Maybe that's how life works in Canada. All in all, despite the rocky start, I would stay there again if I needed to be in that area.
"Hotel needs Update and Attention to Cleanliness."
Arrived at Pantages Hotel on Victoria St. Certainly not 4 star. Entrance not really impressive. Room had a lot to be desirable about. Had to clean all draws, couch, and table tops. Dusty room, shower curtain and shower tiles were mouldy. Furniture was old and scratched, not maintained. Had to order more toilet paper, only a little left on roll. Only one face washer, one gown, one pair of slippers for two people. Two lights above kitchen not working. No milk in fridge. Bed not made. Towels faded and frayed. Always had to ask for additional washers and foot towels - gave up in the end. On our last night, the toilet cistern broke - not a good ending. Pluses however were washing machine and dryer, big fridge, microwave, tea and coffee. Additionally, hotel had nice breakfast bar each morning with very attentive older lady who was a credit to hotel. Dinner in the same bar area was also very good quality. Really, hotel could be great if more important attention was given to rooms - a real shame.
First, the good stuff: the staff are really, really nice. I left a book behind. Sammy went out of his way to immediately fedex it to my house. Amazing! He didn't seem put out by this at all. Really above and beyond! What others have said is true: a bit worn around the edges for sure. The rooms do have a nice kitchen setup, however. Good location.
"Could use an update - and some LIGHTS!"
We just finished over a week in the hotel (business/pleasure trip). Overall the stay very positive. Staff from check-in to cleaning service were flawless. The room itself was very sparse. Seating was very poor - one tiny couchette, a desk chair and two stools that only worked with the rollaway table. Lighting was very poor as well - low wattage bulbs made it almost impossible to work once the sun went down. I had a headache every night because it was almost impossible to read printed documents. (A colleague suggested we buy bulbs at the local supermarket and leave them as a gift to the next customer as the only effective lighting was in the bathroom.) Lack of carpeting means EVERY bit of dust shows and makes the floors quite cold. The quality of staff keeps me from lowering the rating below average.
"Needs a really good cleaning and repairs"
The location is great but that's about it..issues checking in, came a bit early, no biggy stored our luggage and went to the ROM for a few hours told to return for 3 and we could check in, got back just after 3-our friends checked in and left. We then had to wait 15 more minutes while they tried to find a room for us, tried to tell us we may have to wait even longer as nothing was clean (except for the large group the other clerk was holding rooms for....) finally got a room, you need the keycard to operate the elevator (security I get it but..) you can only get off at public floors i.e. Business centre floor or your own floor so we were put on the 15th floor and our friends were put on the 17th so we could not go to their floor to meet up with them which was annoying. The room itself was not impressive in any way-the bed s/b a queen (very uncomfortable) but was not (we have a queen at home so we know how big it should've been) the furniture is scuffed and marked and chipped - looks terrible but the bathroom was the best-the sink was full of long black hair, it was also stuck to the side of the tub - black mold growing in the grout of the tiles in the tub area (bleach is cheap and works good!) and the soap holder had "short" black hair in it...Clean and renovate - We stopped at the bar for drinks before dinner and tried to order drinks (one couple walked out because of the poor service) Our first 2 choices we couldn't have because they didn't actually have the ingredients (this was from their menu they brought to use) so we settled for wine as we could see they atleast had that. Needless to say we chose to have breakfast somewhere else just I case....
