The Park Plaza is very well situated in Amsterdam for a walk into the centre of the city. There are a few restaurants close by, but not many. The hotel itself is a bit dated. From the lobby to the rooms it could do with some freshening up and fresh paint. The room i stayed in was tight and the walls unclean. There were more than a few drag marks along the walls were furniture had clearly been moved, but paint had not been reapplied. The bar in the hotel is nice. Small but had friendly staff and a nice athmosphere. The same can be said for the breakfast area. Pleasant staff and a nice bright room and layout. For getting into the city, its about a 15-20 minute walk in a straight line. Or you could take a tram from the hotel door to the centre. Its located in a nice area also, relatively quite with some lovely architecture. Quick note on getting to the hotel from the airport. Ask a taxi price in advance, and check different companies out. €40 taxi fare for a short taxi ride. Excessive.
"Great Service Shame About Accessibility."
The staff were incredible at this hotel, extremely friendly and did what they could to help though some were more flexible than others. We arrived early with someone who has limited mobility and were put in the second building which has a fairly steep flight of stairs. For the able bodied this isn't a problem but the only lift access is via the breakfast room (entitled restaurant but isn't full service) and so the first day one of our party had to struggle. We asked to move rooms to the main building and so we packed up and handed the key in on the morning of the second day, arrived back at 6pm to be told she was still in the second building! The front of the hotel is also accessed via steps so again not ideal and no alternative was offered. I would be very concerned for any wheelchair user. The rooms themselves are nice and well appointed, very comfortable beds, tv with channels in several languages and free wifi throughout. The "restaurant" is not full service and only open for breakfast leaving the bar as the only in house place to eat however it does not offer suitable seating for those who need a proper table to eat at. I feel the hotel are losing out here and this is where they really could do more to improve traveller experience. I loved the fact this hotel are working with a charitable organisation to improve the local area. It shows a good care for their community and I hope that partnership lasts. Location wise this is on either the line 2 (200m) or 16 (500m) distance to the hotel journey times are quick 15 mins from central station and if you get the Amsterdam unlimited travel card (26 euro for 3 days) you don't need to worry about extra costs to / from the airport. The only other thing with this property is that housekeeping are EXTREMELY loud and seem to take great delight in banging doors, demanding to be in rooms that have the do not disturb sign up and even when told check out is not till later they persisted. I hope this can be taken on board as otherwise this is a lovely and peaceful hotel. Definitely a base to see the real Amsterdam and not (just) the tourist traps
"Penthouse Suite is sensational"
As a disclaimer, we got a free night in the Penthouse Suite here due to emergency maintenance at the Park Plaza Victoria (see my review of that for more details). We arrived fairly late Saturday night and were greeted with our choice of free wine (see aforementioned cock up) and shown to our room. At this point we had no idea we were in the penthouse suite, so when we went to the top floor we thought 'wow, this is fancy!'. Then we were shown into our room and thought 'wow, this IS fancy!'. Then we were shown the upstairs of our room and I don't really have words to describe how I felt. To put it into perspective, the fanciest hotel room I've ever stayed in is probably a bog standard Hilton room - very nice, but not a patch on this. Firstly, the jacuzzi. It is HUGE and (as we discovered the next morning) overlooks Vondelpark. In fact the whole suite is windowed from top to bottom giving incredible views over the park and the city. If it was up to me, I'd live the rest of my life in this suite. There was also, in order of preference - an open fireplace, a huge bed with star lighting above it, a big TV with Dutch and English channels and comfy armchairs in front of it, a picnic style table, a kitchen, a writing desk... Just total luxury. As I'm aware that I was totally starstruck having never been anywhere near a penthouse suite in my life before, I should also add that my wife thought it was slightly shabbily decorated. I was having too much fun in the jacuzzi to say I noticed. The breakfast was excellent, just what you'd expect from a good hotel with a selection of hot and cold buffet foods, coffee, juices, cereals etc. It was in a very pleasant and light room. The location of the hotel is excellent, right on the doorstep is Vondelpark and it's only a short distance from the museum district. The staff were excellent, as was the room service we ordered. In all, my wife and I would highly recommend spending a free night in the penthouse suite of this hotel!!!
"Make sure you get the room you booked!"
Of 3 rooms we booked and pre-paid only one was given to our group as such. For one of the other ones we were downgraded to a much smaller room with no refund. For the 3rd one the person was charged $15 euros a night for an "upgrade" only to be given the very same type of room we had actually booked and pre-paid. If us all hadn't visited each other's rooms to compare we would not have found out that some of us had been given a much smaller room and other charged for an "upgrade" when there was none. Very dishonest!!!
Good place to start trip. Tramline 2 is very useful. Vondel park is near. It is great. Museumplein is near also, within walking distance. Good service, nice breakfirst. clean and odorless room. However you need buy a bottle of water before going in hotel. Water bottle in room is charged 5 euro.
