" In Hideaway place"
If you're looking for a peaceful and private place. This place is one of the choices. Only 11 villas down the hill to the beach but when you want to socialize with world it could be done not so far away. Booking in advance is recommended during high season. Check with the Thai calendar or staff.
Absolute disappointment. Was booked for a one week stay with my boyfriend at the end of a 3-week trip travelling round Thailand in Demcember. Unfortunately there was a monsoon when we arrived on Koh Samui but we were still excited at the prospect of staying at the luxurious Pawanthorn Samui in one of the Pool Villas. Luxurious is definitely not the word I'd use to describe the villas. To keep the review simple and easy to read I'll list the pros and cons. I'll start with cons as they are sadly the most numerous. Cons: 1) Multiple broken/damaged items in the villa inc. lampshades by the bed, the lock and wooden gate at the entrance to the villa, pool lights and fittings in shower. Our outer gate to the "private" villa wouldn't shut properly so anybody walking past could look inside. When we mentioned this to the staff they just said they were aware of it but it was because of the rain and therefore there was nothing they could do - pretty bad design for a resort which gets a few months worth of monsoon season every year. 2) Absolutely HORRENDOUS sewage smell in the villa - the man showing us to our room didn't seem to notice and when we complained all management did was get a housekeeper to spray the whole room with an air freshener, only masking the smell. 3) No welcome pack/book explaining anything about the villa/resort. 4) Very much out of the way - you cannot walk into town from here and it costs at least 400bhat (£10) each way to get a taxi into town/go to the beach - not ideal if you are staying for a week and plan to go into town twice a day like we did (an extra £280). There is a shuttle bus - but this only runs twice daily and they certainly don't advertise it. 5) Beach was horrendous - it was rocky and absolutely covered in debris/rubbish. 6) There was supposed to be a "large custom made sunken bath" in the villa as advertised on the website but there wasn't. Massive disappointment. 7) The pool wasn't really ideal - only one "bed" next to it in the shade, so you had to either be in the pool or inside the villa - no lounging area. 8) Ordered room service (some pizza) on our last night which came from the sister restaurant in Chaweng - absolutely terrible - definitely not recommended - however did enjoy their Thai food for lunch on our one day trip to Chaweng. 9) Path down to the villa was treacherous - paving stones had tree roots growing up and out of them and it was as slippy as ice when it rained (which it did for our whole visit). 10) Villa was very dirty - large amounts of dust on surfaces. Everything just looked grubby. 11) Staff very unhelpful - not friendly or easy to deal with at all. Pros: 1) Provided airport pick up 2) Quiet In the end we left after 3 nights (were booked for 7). Staff asked no questions as to why we were leaving early and didn't seem in the slightest bit bothered. I'd definitely NOT recommend this accommodation unless you have transport, can put up with horrid smells and dirtiness, don't mind uninterested staff and have low expectations.
"Wonderful private place"
There are 7 beautiful spacious studio villas with private pools, big enough for a little swim in the morning. The place is quiet, perfect for a romantic time as well as a honeymoon stay. Three big houses each equipped in a different style, antique Thai, Chinese or Indian, offer space for up to 8 adult persons each. A big banquette area at the beach should be perfect for wedding parties. Three giant panorama pools make it a difficult decision where to swim first. We know this place since years and we are really surprised of the perfect maintainance in this hotel. The really spacious and comfortable rooms look like in their first days of opening. The staff is multilingual, very decent and helpful. If you want to stay in Pawanthorn it will be good to rent a car ( bring an international driver license ) to be independent from public transport or taxis. Friends like to use a bicycle to Chaweng, but we old couple are not that sporty. Please book in time, Pawanthorn is quite famous also amongst Thai high society. We (an Austrian-Thai couple) really love this place and you will meet us there every year in January and March.
I must admit we had great expectations when booking this hotel for our Christmas holidays since we had already been here once 3 years ago and found it very pleasant. But unfortunately this time we found a completely different place. As we got to the hotel, we were given a villa that had no door at the entrance (it had broken because of the heavy rain...they said). The room was dirty and the furniture was pretty worn. The lamp on my bedside was hanging and the phone was out of order. We were shocked! We asked if they had thought of fixing the door anytime during the very same day and they decided then to move us to another villa, which was exactly in the same conditions. Besides, the pool was dirty. I wouldn't take a swim there even if I was paid. After 5 minutes of being in the 'new' villa, while we were waiting for the baby crib we had asked for, there was a blackout which we found that was due to a problem in our villa. The baby crib had no matress so my two years old daugther was supposed to sleep on the wood!! We decided to leave the hotel inmediately without wasting more time. The only good thing' They accepted to give us our ymoney back without any hesitation.
We booked a 3 bedroom villa but they gave us the 4 bedroom villa and locked up one of the bedrooms. The place is large and spacious, but it is really dated and they are doing a horrible job with the cleaning and up keep of the place. There were dead bugs/spiders and cob webs in many of the corners of the villa. When we arrived we noticed the horrible smells in each room. We found out the bad smell in the kitchen was coming from the broken dishwasher with a load of moldy dishes housekeeping didn't check or clean. In addition to the broken dishwasher in the kitchen the stove and microwave wasn't functional. Then after a little while we found out the musky mildew smell from each of the bedrooms were coming from the en suite bathrooms. If we closed the bathroom doors the bedrooms were more bearable but the smell in the bathrooms would get so potent that you would gag when you used it. The resort told us there were free shuttles/cars to the airport. So we booked two cars leaving at on hour apart since two of the guests had a slightly earlier flight. After the first car left, we went to confirm the time of arrive for the second car and were told we had to pay 700 Bahts for the second car. We weren't told this fee when we reserved the day before as we would have all just left together. They said they won't pay the driver and we would be responsible for the car fee if we wanted the 5 minute ride to the airport. This was quite ridiculous as the average cost should have only been around 200 Bahts. We were short on time and got ripped once again by this resort. Also note this resort has a small beach that is littered with garbage and isn’t operational. There are plenty of beautiful, customer friendly, and clean resorts in Koh Samui to choose from like Amari which we stayed at the first several days. Don't make the mistake we did by staying here.
