"Excellent location, less than excellent experience"
We stayed for 2 nights and paid for penthouse upgrade. It's good to have your own rooftop pool & seating area. Hotel room is huge, clean, we had 2BR with 4 double beds, fully equipped kitchen, balcony, lounge & dining area. Pros- *walk 30 secs to beach, *walk 1 min to 5th Ave. * some great eating options at your doorstep, *convenience store next door & * very nice rooftop "adults only" infinity pool. Cons- *really terrible smell in our room. Definitively not due to housekeeping as the unit was very clean. *next door is a massive construction site. The noise was terrible- all day from early morning. Our balcony view was over the construction site which was really disappointing as the hotel was about 90% vacant! (If not more) & the workmen could see directly into our room. * we had no electricity from 9am-2.30pm. This was the whole block so not directly the hotels fault but we were alerted at 8.30am on the day affected. So the room had no working shower, no aircon & no flushing toilet. So you couldn't stay in the room during this time. *no shade on private rooftop pool area, so you couldn't really sit up there for long. * main family pool is also having construction done. Overall- for us the room was unusable for our stay- mainly due to power outage, construction next door. Mainly I'm disappointed to be given arguably the worst room in a pretty much empty hotel.
"Nice place close to the beach"
Nice rooms, very low water pressure in the bathroom, but it didn't matter too much. We had a great kitchen and living room, and very much enjoyed the rooftop pool. The view from the roof is incredible. As close to the beach as you can get!
"Great service and value!"
Hotel is at an excellent location - right next to the beach, close enough to walk to many restaurants, and far enough from crowded places. We stayed in a penthouse suite that came with a private roof top pool. The room was nice and the amenities were complete. The only disappointment we had was the extremely low water pressure in the showers. It was nearly impossible to get cleaned up. We ended up having to use the sink to finish up washing our hair. However, the best part during our stay is the concierge service. Lillian offered great advice and really made the trip for us!
"Excellent stay with all the amenities you need"
This place was great. it was close to the beach (which was beautiful) and to 5th avenue (quinta avenida) for shopping, eating and walking at night. This place had a great pool and place was kept clean all the time. We will definitely be returning.
"Excellent option in PDC"
Stayed here with my family (wife and two teenagers) for two weeks. We chose this hotel from the pictures on their website and based on reviews we had read. Overall, the place pretty much matches to what we expected and hoped for. Location: The hotel is located on Calle 38 which is in the northern end of Playa. It is only 30 metres from the beach which is lovely and is only a 5 minute stroll up the lovely lush street to 5th avenue. 38th street is full of nice shops and restaurants built into the jungle on either side - since the google street view was done. We ate at most of these during our stay - see below. The street is the nicest street we saw in the town. Facilities: Both pools are excellent especially the rooftop which we used the most during our stay with views out over the Mahekal thatched roofs and the beautiful coloured sea beyond. The pool downstairs is also (for kids) but our teenagers were allowed to use the infinity one on the roof. We stayed in one of the penthouse suites so we had our own plunge pool (about 3.5 ft deep) and our kids loved it. The apartment was lovely - we stayed in 301 after two nights in 311 (we asked to be moved from 311 because of the view out over the building site) but both apartments were fine and matched our expectations. I read some reviews complaining about rusty handles and wear and tear in the apartments and yes, they are not pristine but really, you would have to be extremely picky to find problems. The air conditioning was excellent and much needed for us (coming from Ireland!). There is a safe in the apartment, a few TVs, living area and kitchenette. Also a nice balcony. Ours in 301 overlooked the downstairs pool. Staff: Staff at the hotel were courteous and helpful at all times - Lillian was very pleasant and willing to help with any questions we had. Restaurants: Over the course of two weeks we obviously visited many. Our favourites for breakfast were Cuevo del Chango up the street (excellent fruit options) and also the a place called 'Hot Casual' I think up to 5th av and turn right and down a few doors. Both were excellent and we visited them frequently. We also ate at a few of the places on 38th including the Piola and the excellent Thai place just before 5th. We ate at the place below the hotel called Chupi Chupi owned by an Italian couple and we loved the shrimp and the chicken tacos as a great lunch option. Their Italian food is also excellent. We would also recommend some other places including Rey David (30th & 10th) owned by an Italian serving excellent homemade pasta, Mayan Bistro at Hotel Aventura Mexicana (22nd & 10th), La Mission (Cuban) on (2nd & 10th) and 500 Gramos (between 34 and 38 & 5th). There are hundreds of places to eat in Playa and you can find almost any type of food. Some lively bars also with live music in some. Excursions: We took a day trip to Cozumel for a day (about $16 per person return) - ferry port is down near 2nd street. After some lunch in San Miguel (main town on Cozumel) we flagged down a taxi to take us on a tour around the island and agreed a fee of 800 pesos which is about $50 - well worth it and he stopped at all the beaches and sights for photos (2 hours). We spend a day at Xel-Ha (cost about $100 each) - expensive day out but what a treat. Beautiful inlet with lots to see and do especially if you love the water. Highly recommend this as a great day out. We took a tour to Tulum, Akumal and a Ceynote (Labnaha) which was great (about $50 each). Tulum is beautiful and we visited the Mayan ruins there. Akumal is a lovely beach where you can snorkle out to see turtles and the ceynote was a dark cave where you can swim in (lifevests provided) with a torch. Great day out. We also took a trip up to Cancun one day as the kids wanted to go to Wet n' Wild water park (Ventura park). This was good fun too. Finally some tips for anyone traveling here; try to get an apartment overlooking the sea if you can, if you need a taxi, walk up to 10th and flag one down. The ones at the corner of 38th and 5th will charge you at least double. Standard fare anywhere in Playa is 70 pesos which is about $4 I think. Two large shopping malls (Centro Maya & Plaza Las Americas) both a taxi ride away - plenty of shops and cinemas showing English language films. Overall, we were very happy with our choice of hotel for our holiday. hope the above is helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.
