"Why can I only say 'average''"
This hotel is really hard to 'categorise' - the reviews that mention the staff, the gardens, the food, the peace and tranquillity are all absolutely right . But to me, the hotel has no 'soul'! The (non-suite) rooms are in two wings which lead from the ultra-modern reception. The sumptuous suites are in the Manor House itself. But - and it is a big but when the weather is poor - the bar, the breakfast/lunch restaurant and the main evening restaurant are in three separate buildings reached by winding and often uneven paths through the gardens - so if it is wet, you are too! The bar is odd - it is functional and that's truly all I can say about it - it has no atmosphere at all, just hard seats and stools and plain tables - certainly not a bar for sampling exotic cocktails in cosy surroundings! Daily 'happy hour' is good value and the bar service faultless but no regular 'personality' behind the bar - staff who work in other areas seem to be on a rota to serve there. Then of course it is out in the dark (and sometimes wet) to trek to the restaurant where you will get lovely food, attentive polished service but very formal and hushed. It's hard to know, given the geography of the buildings, what could be done to make it really special - it all feels like such a wasted opportunity but as there seems to be lots of repeat guests maybe it doesn't matter. I have stayed in other Quintas so this is not my first experience of this type of hotel and not an attempt to rubbish it for the sake of it, far from it. For couples of a certain age, wanting peace and quiet, happy to keep themselves to themselves, it is probably perfect but I write as I find.
We had such a relaxing stay at this hotel. A peaceful haven with exceptional staff at all levels. We had a garden room which was very comfortable with comfy beds. The gardens are amazing, the swimming pool and seating area that we used every day was maintained to a very high standard. The spa was equally very pleasant. We booked on a half board basis and found the food in the evenings very good. Had lunch a few times during our stay, which was always enjoyable and the breakfasts each day plentiful. For us the 20 minute walk into town, downhill was very pleasant and also down to the Lido area. We always walked back which we found ok but there are plenty of buses going that way and taxis both easily available and at a reasonable cost so anyone with mobility problems would have no trouble getting to and from the hotel. We're not people who normally make return visits to hotels but this one is an exception in our book. We just had a really lovely time. Hats off to the staff, they do a wonderful job!

"The fantastic suites and gardens"
We were lucky enough to be upgraded to a suite in the manor house. Truly fantastic. The gardens are worth spending an hour or two just to enjoy them. We would like to especially mention the following staff who helped make our stay perfect. Our room cleaner Teresa On reception Fabiana At breakfast Sylvia, Joao Pedro A very memorable and enjoyable holiday in Madeira.
"A haven of peace and pure pleasure"
I do not want to repeat yet again all of the comments about this hotel. It was certainly 5 star. I would pay credit to all staff for whom it seemed a pleasure to fulfil your every request. I would also recommend paying the extra for premium rooms which provide not only much more room but pricy especially if you specify first floor. There are plenty of restaurants nearby but be aware that it is extremely hilly . We had chosen half board but personally found the evening meal in the Mansion House restaurant rather too formal for every night of our holiday. Be assured the food was exquisite in every way. We arranged to take a three course meal in the Garden Pavilion but this is only available lunchtime. Same quality of food but can be taken on the terrace outside and no dress code. Good minimarket outside and turn left down the hill. It is on the right and has a superb coffee/cake shop next door. Didn't see the manor house suites. Excellent hotel. totally recommended.
