"Above average for Cambodia"
Although this is a very nice hotel, I wouldn't say it's 4 star by world standards. We had some water issues during our stay. The rooms are spacious but dated. The bathrooms are dated. The food at the hotel is average. The grounds and pool are nice. The staff is very nice and helpful. The location is excellent.
"Best place I've ever stayed in"
The hotel is spotless. Beautiful building from 1931 kept in the best manner. You feel like traveling in time. Incredible staff, very kind and helpful. Amazing breakfast. Stayed 3 times there and I'd definitely stay there if I go back to Siem Reap. Last year I took my family and they loved it. Especially the kids. Great babysitting service
Succumb to the power of the staff. They know what is best. Pay for included breakfast and guts yourself. Go Angkor at 4:30 am as ordered by staff. One Singapore sling and one beer is all you can afford. The barbecue and dancing worth the cost but again, alcoholic drinks may cause discord and expense. Seek out Sok whose English is excellent. Shoe cleaning excellent and free. A-C a bit strange after mosquito nets and fans.
"Less Sycophancy but no Brush"
When I last raided my bank account and stayed at the Grand Hotel d’Angkor (‘Raffles’) – July 2014 – I waxed lyrical on Trip Advisor about its comfort and facilities. I also waxed about the service, but somewhat stickily. Not that it wasn’t good; it was too good; too overbearing; too attentive; in other words - TOO MUCH. The Executive Assistant Manager posted a courteous, if slightly hurt, response: “We understand that there is a thin line between being thoughtful and being over-attentive and we may have crossed the border at times, albeit unintentionally.” Usually, one nods at this sort of stuff: “Yes, yes, yes. They would say that wouldn’t they'” not expecting anything to be done about it. However, I’m happy to report that, having raided my bank account again, I gave myself a Grand Hotel d’Angkor weekend treat up in Siem Reap to avoid the madding crowd of Water Festival in Phnom Penh. (I’ve ‘experienced’ at least five of those since arriving in Cambodia in 2003 – three too many.) Wonder of wonders, ‘Raffles’ is now 99% perfect. The service – in the shape of its staff in reception, restaurants, poolside, rooms, gym – everywhere – is tamed. Now it is helpful, polite and friendly without the embarrassing sycophancy of yesteryear. At least it was over this particular weekend. (Maybe they’d been warned I was coming.) Thus, though VFM (Value For Money) is questionable (as there are many fine hotels in Siem Reap offering bigger rooms, better bathrooms and similar repast for less loot), I can thoroughly recommend the Grand Hotel for its style, elegance, sophistication – and service! The 1%' Forgive me for raising this earthy matter. (It’s my bugbear in many hotels, not just ‘Raffles’.) Why no lavatory brush' I truly hate leaving the room staff unpleasant tasks I wouldn’t want to do myself. Come on ‘Raffles’! Such brushes only cost a couple of dollars each …
"Grand British hotel is a terrific base for visiting Angkor Wat"
This really is a grand old hotel in the British tradition. Our room was very comfortable, with separate bath and shower, closet space, mini-bar and view of the pool area. The service was excellent at both restaurants and bars. The breakfast buffet included champagne, and we ate at the hotel once at each restaurant; the more formal one was a respite from the busy water festival going on outside, and the more casual one had not only good Cambodian food but a very respectable bacon cheeseburger much to my husbands delight after two weeks in Southeast Asia. The gift shops had a nice selection of lacquer bowls that were the best we had seen for reasonable prices. The hotel is on the way to the Angkor site, and a 5 minute tuk-tuk to restaurants in town. We never did make it to the pool or spa and look forward to indulging on a future visit.
