"2 dollars reputation"
At a first impression the hotel looks great and you feel it may have a 5 star service. Rooms are large with a comfortable Thai design and pool is great. However, in my experience the service was scarse and very disappointing. I had the worse check out ever: I was asked if I had taken any drink from minibar and I answered that I didn't, so I regularly payed my bill and left the hotel to run to the airport for a very early morning flight. Very surprisingly, the shuttle was stopped and I was told that I could not leave the hotel until the staff checked that I really did not use minibar (never happened in my life in any hotel) ! ! ! So I had to loose 5 to 10 important minutes waiting for them. Staff confirmed that minibar was ok but they wanted to charge 2 dollars (yes: 2 dollars!!) because a bathroom glass was broken. It was not important for them to know that it broke when electricity suddenly stopped because there were issues in their electric system. We also had to change rooms keys more than one time for this. It was not important for them that we tolerated wedding parties at night that made impossible to use the nice bar area, noises from the adjacent rooms because walls are very thin, night staff sleeping in the elegant sofa of the lobbies, none that could bring you the early-breakfast box in the room...it really looked like they needed 2 dollars to survive as they were the worse poor hostel (that anyway wound never charge 2 dollars for a broken glass as it would never happen in any poor restaurant..) although they charged hundreds of dollar for 1 night. You are treated as a potential thief although you gave your credit card number as a deposit. It's a pity that a very nice hotel with great potential looses its reputation for a scarse and shortsighted policy with no respect to the guest! So, if you are looking for a real 5 star hotel treatment (not limited to the formal Thai smiles and bows!), go to another hotel or to a guest house where you will be taken care with real kindness and may also save money!
We stayed at the Ratilanna for four days during our honeymoon. We really enjoyed our stay here. We thought the rooms were nice and spacious, and well stocked/ cleaned everyday. The service was excellent, and the food at the restaurant was very good. We thought the breakfast buffet had great options! My only complaint is that the bathroom needs updating. The shower was not that great. Other than that, we loved The Ratilanna and would definitely recommend this hotel!
I loved the decor in our room and throughout the hotel. It had a lot of charm, and the bathroom had it's own waterfall in front of the bath tub. It has a good breakfast and the restaurant has a view to the Ping River. The staff was very nice and accommodating. They helped us with the taxis and Tuk Tuks and negotiated the price for us in advance. For such a beautiful hotel I was surprised that the guest where not staying there in the evening to enjoy the music and it's view to the river. It was dead at night at the hotel.
"Good service but lacks authenticity"
If I had to chose , I prefer to stay at Ratchamanka hotel which is much more authentic. The Ratilana has great staff but the location is too far out of the old city. The restaurant isn't really impressive either. Rooms are loud because of the architecture of the complex; you hear every crying baby or snoring neighbor...
"Miles from 5 stars"
We did stay for one night only and I am happy it has not been longer. The hotel looks like it has been built in 1980 and also feels like that. The rooms also look old and desperately need an update. We had a room facing the court which was very annoying since one can hear all the people in the facilities and most of all horrible bar music in the evening. The feeling but also the service is nowhere near 5 star standard. One should definitely stay at another hotel in Chiang Mai.
