"Adequate, convenient Hotel except Room 201 - fantastic bar man!"
If you are looking for decent accommodation at an affordable price and are happy to stay in a clean room with slightly dated decor the Royal Rio is fine. An easy 2 block stroll to Copacabana beach and 10 minutes to the famous Copacabana Palace it's a popular hotel with an often crowded reception/foyer area. Upon arrival Reception was very helpful and spoke both our languages, French and English. Unknown to us we were automatically upgraded from a Deluxe to a Super Deluxe with Spa Bath and Sauna in Room 201 right near the lifts. The ambiance of the room was a bit dull and for me, the added elements in the bathroom detracted from the layout. The biggest problem with this room was noise. All through the night there was a noise which sounded like wheels rolling along the floor or machinery turning. At first we thought it was bags on the tiles outside the lift but nobody was in sight. Add in the squeeling noise made by the pipes and we didn't get much sleep the first night. The aircon unit was also very noisy so we left it off but if you want the windows open there is street noise to contend with. Needless to say the next morning we complained and asked to be moved - Reception claimed to have no knowledge of the noise but we have no doubt that they must receive regular complaints from this room. We were told that another room would be ready for us later that afternoon and it was. We were downgraded to the Deluxe Room we had actually booked and this room was lovely. Much nicer layout, on Level 13 so it was brighter and lighter, nicer bathroom and far from the lifts. We had no noise and a much better sleep. The buffet breakfast in the morning was substantial with a lot of different choice to satisfy many different nationalities but it was a bit like a feeding frenzy. After 9am it was packed and difficult to find a table that wasn’t strewn with dirty dishes. The staff did their best to keep up with the vast turnover of diners but they struggled. Go early or have low expectations about a peaceful, relaxing breakfast. The highlight of our stay was the exceptionally friendly and professional service provided by Nilton in the bar at the back of the lobby. Nilton makes a great cocktail and his smile and clear desire to do whatever he can to make his guests happy was a breath of fresh air - not just for the Royal Rio but compared to most service anywhere! Although we didn’t speak the same language we felt instantly at home in his presence. A rare skill! With a cool rooftop pool and bar area we would have enjoyed in better weather, I can recommend the Royal Rio as a decent, mid-range property. Just don’t accept to stay in Room 201.
"Old and ordinary, hopeless Wi-Fi, tired and worn."
Hotel is is old, tiled floors, old building and noisy. Wi-Fi (which they charged us for) was non-existent. Location is ordinary and there really is nothing to recommend about this hotel. Many other better options available.
"Noisy and a little bit old"
The hotel in general is very noisy, you can ear everything from the hall, the water pumps makes noise everytime you open it. First night we had to move to a different room because water started to fall from the ceiling. Wifi doesnt work well inside the room. Breakfast is good.Room service and in the pool is good too.
"Dirty, noisy, bad service, overcrowded"
I was here for Christmas/NY wth friends. Hotels in Rio are overpriced in general and this is my third time there so I knew that. But this hotel is shabby, dirty, noisy and hit and miss as to whether you get a rude Carioca on reception or a nice one. Wifi is intermittent and at breakfast you can see how overcrowded the hotel is. The staff at breakfast were excellent and I have to credit them. The reception staff were poor, the cleaners, some good some really really bad. Hot water sometimes 'ran out' .
Good location ,5 minutes from beach, breakfast buffet was excellent ,very busy ,worth extra money for deluxe room as standard room was small, Wi fi was not great at times Overall good value clean hotel Staff were very helpful
