"It's so good that we came back"
A few years ago I was here with my wife for our baby moon before our son Nicolau was born. We liked it so much the first time that we came back and this time I brought my parents. The rooms are super comfortable and very private. The lady that cleaned our room was very nice and attentive. The food keeps on being amazing and we actually told the Italian chef that the reason that we went back was his mean green lobster curry (the best I've had in my life). In my previous post I spoke about the maintenance of the hotel and this time I noticed a big effort and many people actually maintaining the rooms and the hotel. The staff is great and experienced. Overall we loved it again, my parents loved it and will definitively go back if we have the chance.
"Beautiful resort let down by poor staff training"
I just left SALA Phuket after a two-night stay and must admit that my expectations weren't met. I've been travelling in Asia for nearly a month and I had kept this hotel for the very end of my trip as a treat - only to realize that here in Thailand, price has very little to do with the quality of the experience. The lady that checked us in was very kind but did not seem to understand English very well - which led to a couple of misunderstandings right from the beginning. We were given a room with a private pool (a villa), even though I had booked a double room with balcony. So I guess we were upgraded - but we were never told! Very strange behaviour to say the least... Around 5 PM, after unpacking our bags, we went straight to the pool area, could not locate where to get pool towels from, spotted a young man and asked him where we could get towels: without saying a word, he reached into a basket not far from him and handed us two towels, without smiling and without asking us where we wanted to be seated. So we made our way to the pool and picked a couple of loungers, but all the mattresses had been taken away for the day and nobody bothered to offer to set up the loungers for us. Not a good first impression. Our villa itself was lovely and clean, but they did the turndown before 6 PM on the first evening, which means we did not have dry towels the following morning (the bathroom is outside in the humidity and there is no room inside the villa to hang their huge bath towels to dry). When they did the turndown (fortunately later) the following evening, they replaced our hand towels only, not our bath towels - but not without moving them from where we had initially left them to dry, which means we didn't know which towel belonged to whom. Not a smart move. The food at the restaurant was good, but the service was a huge disappointment. Once again it boils down to poor English language skills, which in turn is due to poor staff training. And on my last morning, I purposely ordered their "Mild Yellow Curry" for breakfast (I never eat spicy food before flying), and it turns out that the curry wasn't mild at all. And don't get me wrong, I know (and I love) spicy food. The good things about this resort are the grounds and the infrastructure, especially the pools and the gym. The free wifi Internet is very well designed - you just need to log into the system once and then you can use all of their different hotspots without having to re-enter your credentials every time. And believe me, they need lots of hotspots as this resort is HUGE. It is the first time I see this kind of wifi setup in a hotel and I was really impressed by that. On my last morning, I called Reception to ask to meet with the General Manager, as I had quite a few recommendations to share with him. Well, he was away in Bangkok, and that was that. The person at the other end of the line did not understand that there was probably something important at stake, and did not offer to put me in touch with someone else in charge. That sums up the problem with this place: poor staff training all around. Given the prices here, which are sky high for Thailand, I cannot rate this resort higher than average. I'll explore different high-end options next time I'm in Phuket.
Hotel and restaurant are fantastic. The hotel is situated 25 minutes from the airport and sits next the beach in well manicured gardens. The accommodation consists of a secure and very private compound with your own pool and sleeping area. The food is wonderful as is the staff and I will be back.
"Ummm, I'd like to move in here to live"
What a beautifully, luxurious hotel. We were here for a short stay but the service, decor, romance and elegance will draw me back for sure! We had a private pool, were a minute's walk to the beach, and felt like we were in the lap of luxury. The restaurant on the grounds was also great.
