There is not one thing about this resort that I could find wrong. The resort itself is beautiful and located perfectly in Choengmon Beach. Lots of restaurants, bars and shopping within steps of the resort. The staff are attentive, speak very good english, and always have a smile for you. We stayed in a Garden Pool Room. The room was well appointed, beautifullly decorated, and very clean. The private pool leaves nothing to be desired. I would gladly recommend this resort to anyone.
"A Special Place"
First, if you have never been to a Thai beach resort and you are more familiar with the Caribbean, Hawaii, Mexico, or the Mediterranean, Koh Samui is a different place with some pros and cons versus those other options. Since this is not a review of the Island itself I will leave it at that and review the Island separately elsewhere on Trip Advisor. I provide that context so that you understand that my review of Sala Samui is primarily of the resort itself. First, the rooms. We had the opportunity to experience two different room types, the 1 bedroom Pool Villa for five nights and the Sala Pool Villa for one night due to a mix-up in our reservation by the resort, which they caught just after we reserved the room on-line. (The resort was very apologetic and made up for their error by providing us the 1-bedroom Villa at the price of the smaller Sala Pool Villa and other “freebies”. We were extremely satisfied with how they handled the problem. They went above and beyond). Both rooms were awesome. As to which was better, they each had their pluses and minuses. The 1 bedroom has a separate sitting room, which is nice, but the main room itself is actually less spacious than the Sala Pool Villa room. The biggest advantage in my mind of the 1-Bedroom is that the pool is somewhat larger, the sundeck is larger and there is an outdoor table that seats four. In either case, though, the pool is awesome and completely private. It’s 1.5 meters deep (about five feet) across the entire length. Much deeper than we expected. It isn’t just a “splash pool”. The rooms themselves are detached bungalows, separated from your neighbors by tall privacy walls. The pictures on the Internet don’t do the privacy justice. Both had outdoor bathrooms, enclosed with drop down sides. The outdoor shower and tub were fine but I would have preferred the toilet and a vanity sink inside, frankly. The novelty of going outside to use the toilet wore off pretty fast, but it was okay. A small flashlight is provided but we were glad we brought our one of our own so both of us had one at the ready for that middle of the night short walk to the toilet. The outdoor shower in the 1-bedroom Villa was larger than in the Sala Villa and the tub was much larger (almost too large in our opinion). The 1-bedroom had separate “his” and “hers” vanities, which was a plus over the Sala Pool Villa. My wife actually preferred the Sala Pool Villa bathroom over the 1-bedroom version because the tub was on a more human scale (still fit two though!), the toilet was easier to access from the bedroom, and the vanity had a lighted make-up mirror (she told me I had to add that to my review for the ladies!). I preferred the 1-bedroom bathroom myself. Maybe it’s a man thing. Service. Excellent in all areas. Sometimes communication was an issue as not everyone speaks English fluently but you find a way to be understood and, frankly, for us that is one of the things that makes it fun to visit other cultures! If I had any complaint it was that the Resort doesn’t do a great job explaining all the little things – like someone will come to the room every day around dusk not only for turn-down service but to light the essential mosquito coils! There were several of these kinds of things we learned through experience. I would suggest a more detailed hotel directory or welcoming sheet. Housekeeping. Fabulous. Everything was clean and anything we needed handled immediately. Bugs. They spray and put coils everywhere but definitely bring your own insect repellant and an “after bite” treatment. It’s manageable if you work at it. Spa. Great. Yes, it’s much more expensive than the massages outside the resort (probably by a factor of 7) but still cheap compared to other resorts around the world. My suggestion – do both! The contrast itself is interesting. And don’t be afraid to try it. My wife has always been reluctant to have anything more than a neck massage but is now hooked on Thai massages! Beach/Pool. The beach isn’t the best we have been on but its good enough. Service was very good. Nice loungers. Attentive service. Surroundings. Some okay restaurants and plenty of convenience stores within walking distance but nothing outstanding. Grab a taxi into one of the larger towns or, better yet, just hang out at Sala Samui! Restaurant. Incredible. I am writing a separate review on the restaurant with more detail. Everyone raves about the breakfast and rightfully so. However, dinner is the real star. W-Fi. Very good and reliable. Ours was complimentary. I think it is for everyone but not sure. The little things. A different treat every night; your choice of pillow types and lotions; the Bangkok News delivered to your mailbox. And more. The bottom-line. If you have made the decision to go to Samui, Sala Samui would be a great choice. We hope to return one day.
"Amazing Resort and Experience"
My wife and I had the most remarkable stay for our honeymoon in January 2017. The staff, the beautiful scenery and the island vibe made Sala Samui a romantic get-away that we will remember for years and years to come. The villa we stayed in (Pool Villa) was like walking into our own piece of heaven. The private pool with our own lounging area, our bathroom open to the beauty of nature around us and the bedroom that could be closed off to the world and let us feel like we are the only ones at the Sala made us feel like royalty. Every member of the staff was always smiling and truly enjoying being helpful, which was very much appreciated. Sala Samui is also in a perfect location to adventure and relaxation. Very close by there is a popular fisherman’s night market, snorkeling tours, breath taking waterfalls and the picture perfect beaches made it difficult to leave after four days. From the moment we arrived every person who worked at the resort is so kind. We did the honeymoon package, which is a great value and the staff made it so special for us. It included free Thai massages, a romantic beach moonlight dinner and the room decorated so beautifully was magical and more than we could have ever expected. We will remember our stay at Sala Samui for year and years to come and continue to praise the welcoming staff and beauty that is Kho Samui to all of our friends and family. We can’t wait to go back one day!
I stayed here for 3 nights with my husband on our honeymoon. The pool villa was absolutely stunning. There was a good sized pool for us, 2 sun loungers, and a canopied day bed. There was an open air bathtub, shower, sink, and toilet. All enclosed in a charming white mosquito net. The bathroom was so beautiful and relaxing we spent each night just soaking in the tub. Bath salts and citronella candles were provided every day. The bedroom was well air conditioned and also had a small couch inside. The bed was very comfortable. They provide you the chance to choose your pillow preference, and which scents you want for you lotions/body gels. They provided complimentary snacks (nuts, and dried mangos/papaya) refreshed daily. In addition, the chef dropped off "sweets" each night and a handwritten note, which were very charming and delicious. We highly enjoyed it! I honestly did not want to leave our villa/nirvana. We did complimentary morning yoga, which was mostly stretching and very nice way to wake up before breakfast. The two pools in the main area of the hotel were very nice to look at as well. I noticed that the white day beds looked a bit stained so those could have been updated, but it didn't take away much since they put towels on them anyways. We didn't spend much time there as our own pool villa was so beautiful. The nearby beach was also very nice, comfy nice looking sun loungers and attendants to bring you fresh cocktails/food. We enjoyed walking down the beach as well and dining along the way at the local spots. The locals are very nice. The ocean water was very warm and enjoyable. We loved the complimentary breakfast so much. All the food was fresh and fantastic. We didn't eat at the hotel restaurants as we wanted something more affordable and frankly authentic. The nearby restaurants were absolutely fantastic for authentic Thai food. There were very reasonably priced set seafood menus with fresh caught daily options. Cocktails, beer, wine, etc. Very delicious dessert options as well. (Don't expect the ambiance to be high class on the streets, as you are in a small island city in Thailand...you will see garbage, exposed wire, smells, etc. For those who can't handle that stay in the 5 star hotel). Each afternoon and night has a great happy hour deal in SALA, and the cocktails are to die for. We did have the chance for late 2 pm checkout as we had a late departing flight. That was very much appreciated. We were able to shower before we left in an available room which was also very gracious of them. The only negative thing that happened was due to communication. I had ordered a bottle of prosecco from room service and they brought a very expensive bottle of champagne instead due to her misunderstanding me. We had to return the champagne as it was very expensive and it was a little frustrating for both involved. Be very patient and communicate slowly (indicate on the menu if needed) with the staff because it saves any misunderstandings. We avoided ordering room service as communication was a little too hard. Overall, we had a fantastic time and it was the perfect way to end our long honeymoon throughout SE Asia.
"Great Stay at Sala Samui"
Stayed at Sala 2 weeks ago, and after a long flight we were greeted with cool cloth and refreshing drink. Very friendly , lovely staff, champagne and some food in room on arrival. Room was great with good size balcony and day bed, but need better lighting in room and a mirror. Nice boutique size hotel with nice pools and beach front. All the staff were courteous at all times and engaging, especially the breakfast staff and pool bar. Even thought the weather wasn't typical of this time of year, we had a lovely time. We had dinner a few times at the The Long Table restaurant on main road outside hotel, fab seafood and great staff. The owner offered for us to go in the afternoon and watch them prepping food, just wish we'd had time. Made friends and a few good nights at Be My Guest Cocktail bar on main road outside hotel with Captain Nimo and Kate, very genuine nice couple and happy to help with anything, even offered us a lift back to the airport. :-) . Had dinner at the hotel and did a cooking class. Tip, if you do the cooking class do it at 3pm, then you get to eat the food wish was a early dinner for us, and it was delicious. Great massage at hotel, their signature with warm oil. Also we tried a couple of places on the beach, each side of the sunbeds, very good. Thank you to all the staff at Sala for a lovely stay.
