Airport pickup very efficient. Reception desk sits very oddly within the car park which doesn't lend itself to a relaxing Thai welcome. Check-in efficient - welcome drink and flowers were handed over and then we were ushered to our room immediately (while still drinking). Tour of the room was delivered by a women who seemed very indifferent like she had done this a thousand times before.. Booked a garden villa. Room sits on the ground floor and is very tightly designed. Front door opens directly onto the bed. We had to place our luggage on the seating area otherwise we couldn't get around the room. If you are adjusting lights or aircon, you had to move open the drapes which cover the windows and door facing the garden/other rooms. One day we returned to our villa to find a random undergarment lying next to the fruit bowl which the maid had found somewhere. Only one problem - it was not ours. Pool area is beautiful. Beach was dirty. Breakfast was very good and wide variety. Thai dance dinner was interesting. They danced for 11 minutes. Music for 30 minutes. The end. Absolutely no communication from anyone as to why it stopped (assume it was due to the rain). The (western) manager was at the dinner, eating from the buffet and sitting alone at the bar area. No greeting of guest. No comments as to what had happened to the show. He disappeared after eating his dinner It rained non-stop for the entire time we were at the resort. Management didn't provide guidance of any kind - guest were helping each other in the dining room with ideas of what to do and the airport/flight status. Several guest checked out early while others complained while sitting in their rooms. Professional management should be able to address any situation to make a guest comfortable - certainly able to provide some ideas of what could be done e.g. exercise classes, shopping trips, etc. We rented a motorbike and were able to get out a bit. (on day 4 of torrential rain, they did extended happy hour). We were dropped off at the airport (by the hotel) to a sea of people who had been sitting for hours. The driver said 'oh, i've never seen the airport like this'. A gesture from the hotel might have been to send us with information, bottle of water, anything to make our 7 hour delay a bit more palatable. There are far better 'resorts' at this price -
"Lovely, peaceful and friendly"
My wife and I had our honeymoon here from Boxing Day until the 9th of January 2017. We arrived after a marathon journey from the uk and were greeted by a friendly staff member named James on reception. We were given some refreshing drinks and cool towels to cool off. James spoke very good English and helped us get checked in quickly and efficiently. We were taken to our room (deluxe balcony) and were very impressed. Air con was lovely as it was very humid. Outdoor bathroom was a unique feature and the day bed on the balcony made for some nice down time in the early evening. The main bed was very comfortable and a great size. We did however seem to pick a very bad time to visit ko Samui as it pretty much rained the whole time and this did lead to some leeks in our bathroom area. The wet floor was very dangerous and both me and my wife had a few worrying slips on it. We called reception and reported it . A cleaner came with some towels very quickly and a maintenance guy visited too but I'm not sure he did much really. When it wasn't raining in the first few days of our trip we found the pool areas to be very relaxing and clean. The bar staff were great especially uam who kept us topped up with drinks and informed us when happy hour was on. The sala raestaurant was very nice. The food was small in portions but high in quality however not cheap. We chose to venture out more for food as it was more affordable for us but for quality the restaurant was second to none. Breakfast at the restaurant was always very nice. The set menu had some lovely Thai and western dishes available and the buffet offered plenty of fruit and pastries. One or two pieces of criticism I have for the resort are 1:- The lack of a main bar. Due to the rain the outdoor pool bar was closed most of the time and although the management offered extended happy hour until the rain stopped we found there wasn't really anywhere to gather and utilise this, the restaurant was always full with diners and not the sort of place you could just relax play cards and enjoy buy 1 get 1 free cocktails. 2:- The prices were on the high side compared to other restaurants and bars in the area and were made higher due to the 10% gratuity added onto every transaction. I don't want to turn this into a negative review because we loved so much of what the sala Samui offered us so I will end this review by praising every single member of staff at the resort. They were so welcoming and always incredibly friendly and are a true credit to the resort. I would return to the sala Samui for sure however it would be at a different time of year to avoid the rain and the surrounding floods.
"Bitter sweet experience"
We stayed in one of the deluxe balcony rooms for 4 days mid Jan, very clean but tired looking, bed very good, as was the air con. All staff we encountered were very friendly but as mentioned in a previous review once engaged in any kind of conversation they lacked basic English skills which I would expect from a resort claiming to be 5 star. This became a problem at the restaurant because they would get the order wrong simply because they didn't understand the request. Thursday morning we were asked if we would like to attend the Thai night buffet, I asked the usual things like what time did it start and the cost. The lady said it would start at 8 and the cost was 1495 baht each, ok i said book us in for around 7.30 then. The food was good but the entertainment consisted of 3 or 4 dancers/actors doing some kind of routine in 2 tem minute spots and a fire act on the beach, no times were posted for anything and when we asked about the Thai culture in the dance, one waitress had to ask another waitress, then she asked her supervisor, it just carried on like this, it really seemed as if some staff had just been recruited and had no idea' At breakfast your can request something from the menu and get smoothies, so put the order in, but waited and waited for one of the smoothies, I then asked what had happen to it and they admitted they had forgot! Overall the food quality was very good,, for me it was the service and prices that ruined it, when checking out I asked them to remove the 17 per cent service charge for the one nights restaurant bill, which they did. Incidentally they also charged a service fee for the Thai buffet'' which was self service! I have no problem paying a premium at a nice resort but felt the little add ons to the bill should have been better advertised.
"Don't be put off at the reception "
On arrival at reception first impressions are not good , the reception is set off the road from a average street with run down shops , reception is a bland affair with no flowers , if we had just called in I don't think we would have stayed ! Once in the hotel complex its fabulous the rooms are well laid out , the 2 pools are fabulous with good location to the beach , the restaurant is excellent ( but not cheap ) and the staff could not please you enough . Lots of taxis to take us anywhere , really enjoyed the fishermans village We would deff stay again but if I was running the hotel I would try harder to improve the image at reception
"BEAUTIFUL resort, but pricy and impersonal!"
We had a really lovely stay at beautiful Sala. The room and bed is a good size, bathroom (outdoor) is lovely and the balcony is big with a great size sofa to chill in the evening. The pools are large and the 'adult' pool is really pretty. Overall the hotel is beautiful and super clean. The staff is really super nice, however almost too polite and it's hard to get any personal touch from them which can make it quite impersonal (compared to many other resorts in Thailand where the staff are talkative and joking, they seem to be almost too polite to have a casual chat with the guests). The beach is really nice too and the staff clean it all the time. However if you just walk a few meters out of the resort's beach it's super dirty and there's bottles and plastic everywhere. It's really a shame that the beach is not being taken more care of outside the hotel's own beach as the overall beach experience lack a bit when you see such a beautiful beach surrounded by garbage :( The restaurant is nice and located right by the beach with a fantastic view. The first night we were there they had dining on he beach which looks really romantic, unfortunately we were not able to get a table as it was already fully booked. The restaurant serves a mix of Thai and Western food and it's really not anything amazing and prices are way too high if you compare to any other similar restaurant on Samui. One night we dined at another restaurant called Zazen and the food was 10 times better and it was much cheaper. At Sala there were also a seafood night and a traditional thai food night and the prices for both nights were outrageous for a buffet style dinner. I think Sala really need to up their game here as it feels a bit like a money machine... The Spa is really nice, but again the prices are way too high. It's basically the same price for a massage at Sala spa as it is in London(!!). If you go to a local spa or on the beach it's about 8-10 times cheaper than on the resort. Overall I feel they take advantage that they are a 5 Star hotel and think they can put the prices up on everything, however I think they would win more if they lowered the prices for their spa and restautant and hired a great chef to run the restautant.
