"First Sandals Experience"
My boyfriend and I traveled to the Sandals Inn for a 5 night getaway in February. From start to finish, we had the best service and experience we've had at an all-inclusive resort. This was a first Sandals stay and it definitely won't be our last. From the moment we arrived, they had a nice little waiting room with beverages and beer while you waited for your shuttle from the airport to the resort. We were only about 15-20 minutes from the resort which was nice after a long day of traveling. The resort itself is small and nice but nothing to special. Checking in was a breeze and the front desk woman Ashle (i think) walked us right to our room where our bags had been waiting. The shuttle service that takes you to the two other Sandals resorts in the area was always on time, sometimes even a little early. The only minor issue was that so many people want to catch the first shuttle so its a tight squeeze and if there is no room, you'll have to wait another hour for the next one. Otherwise, we really enjoyed going to both the other resorts. We especially liked Sandals Royal Caribbean with the private island for lunch and dinner. The water sports were a great addition! Every morning after we'd get off the shuttle at either resort, we went paddle boarding, kayaking, or took the hobie boats out and we really enjoyed being able to do that kind of stuff besides just walking and sitting around. The food was phenomenal, my favorite was the signature pizza at Sandals Montego Bay for lunch. Highly recommend making reservations as soon as you get there for the restaurants you want to go to at other resorts, the one at Sandals Inn was nothing special so we didn't even bother making a reservation. The Sunset Bar at the Sandals Inn was such a great place to hangout while waiting for the shuttle and to stop at before calling it a night thanks to Lamar, Floyd, and Romario who made sure we always had a drink in our hand and chat with during the slow times. I do agree with most that the rooms were outdated but it really didn't bother us at all, we were only in the room to shower and sleep so it got the job done. We truly enjoyed our stay and although we might not be back to Sandals Inn, we do want to check out other Sandals throughout the island of Jamaica because of the service and amenities that we experienced during our first stay. I can't wait to go back to not only Jamaica but to another Sandals resort. Thank you for a wonderful, relaxing vacation Sandals!
"Time for a rethink'"
This was our third trip to Jamaica and our third to Sandals. We had previously stayed at Ocho Rios and at the Royal Caribbean, which was our favorite. We tried to book the RC this time but it was full so we stayed at the Carlyle (or Inn or whatever it’s called this week). We read the brochure and the reviews here and we talked to the agent on the phone so we had a good idea what to expect. First thing to say is that the staff are great, as they are at every sandals we have visited. Special shout outs are due to Leroy, Romario and Floyd at the bar, all of whom all went out of their way to give great service. One morning we were by the pool and Romario came by. He saw us and came over for a fist bump and we asked him for a couple of drinks. He said “Ya man” with a smile and went to get them. Only after he had gone did we realize that his shift wasn’t due to start for 10 minutes. We were embarrassed but that is indicative of the great service they give. From receptionist to housekeeping staff and breakfast servers everyone was friendly and welcoming. We had a “Penthouse Petite Suite” which was the most expensive class of room offered by the Carlyle. It was on the 3rd floor and there are no lifts, which in fairness we established when booking. It’s not a suite but it is fairly petite. The room itself is of average size, nice big comfortable bed, small balcony, TV, chair. No sofa, no sitting area, not a suite. It’s a hotel room. The bathroom is tiny and disappointingly shabby with shower over bath. A couple of times the water stopped running but it came back after a short while so no big deal. Street noise was tolerable except for one night when a screeching car alarm complete with sirens went off at 4am and continued going off until, presumably, the car battery went flat. The pool area is great with plenty of loungers all the way around. We never had any trouble getting a spot. People come around periodically and offer drinks and the bar is a short walk away so no hardship there. The Jacuzzi was closed on the Sunday when we arrived and remained so for the entire week. We’re still not sure why. The sign just said “Jacuzzi Closed”. Maybe it’s fixed now. The Carlyle offers two restaurants, the Carlyle and the Bay Window. We ate at the Carlyle on our first night and it was great. It was closed on Monday and on Thursday when they had a buffet and on Wednesday when we had the returning guest’s dinner. So for most of the week you had 1 choice if you choose not to go out and were not a returning guest. There are excellent choices at the RC (Thai, Eleanors etc..) and at Mobay (Oleanders in particular, although the service can be slow) but it’s nice to have a choice without having to catch a bus. The entertainment staff, Daniel and Travis, tried very hard and to be honest we felt sorry for them. Because of the lack of culinary options nearly everyone went out in the evening so their valiant attempts to put on entertainment often found little in the way of an audience. This is going to sound like a critical review and I don’t want it to because the people are great. In my humble opinion Sandals need to decide what to do with this place. It’s not really a Sandals resort and it’s clearly been neglected. The fact that they can't decide what to call it seems to underline that view. As these reviews show, a lot of people love it but a lot of others clearly leave disappointed and will probably write off Sandals if this is their only experience. I’d bet there are many more who don’t write reviews but just don’t ever come back. Talking and listening to fellow guests we saw both, those who love the place and those who were disappointed. Small attention to detail issues like making sure things like the Jacuzzi are working, fixing the bathrooms up and having two quality restaurants available every night would improve things. And maybe finding a way of putting a lift in….. It’s definitely less expensive than the other Sandals resorts and it needs to be but if anyone is looking for the Sandals experience I’d recommend paying the $1500-2000 extra and get it at one of the other resorts. We will be back to Sandals next year but it will not be to the Carlyle, except to drop in for a drink with the guys at the bar.
"The Carlyle has cozy small hotel Jamaican charm"
We decided on this resort because we always wanted to try Sandals and this way we were able to enjoy and compare different resorts at a lower price. The Inn is a quiet and quaint hotel with a boutique feel. The pool, lobby, state of the art gym, restaurants, bar and impeccable grounds were all very lovely. The staff are all very friendly, and the food was always excellent. We had the best steak at the Carlyle, better than Oleander Room! We loved that we felt comfortable chatting with other people staying there and the bartenders( Lamar, Romario and Floyd) were friendly, attentive and excellent at making wonderful drinks. The talented Mr. Nibbles was the chef at The Bay Window and prepared a very tasty dinner for all of us. He came around and chatted with everyone which was nice. Mr. Nibbles snack bar was really good, homemade nacho chips and excellent jerk chicken wraps. Our waiters were all attentive and very friendly. The rooms were quite small as most resorts go even when you pay more to be on the 3rd floor. We had a nice view of the beautiful ocean and pool and the room did have a nice Caribbean feel, but no couch and a too small bathroom with sound easily traveling through a false window to the hall. The beds and linens were very comfortable and the heat pump keep our room cool without any noise at all. A cool thing they do every evening is a turn down service and they give you the Footprints newspaper for the next day. Our room was also very clean early in the day. Unfortunately our room had a mildew smell which we tolerated. I didn't mind the street noise much until a car alarm went off at 5:00 am for a long time. We found the reservation process slow and tedious because it is a phoning system when you want to book the al a carts ( 4 at the other resorts) They were unable to get through and had to email etc, We were given 2 reservations and we didn't have them written down, but were told that they would be written out for us and delivered to rooms later. That never happened, so we were unsure of the time. We attempted to confirm the time at SMB and she was never able to get through!! So the only reason I'm mentioning this was because it was a complete waste of time when all of the Sandals resorts should be on the same computer system instead of calling! We spent most of our time at the SMB resort, loved the lobby, beach, pool area, beach restaurants (we tried everything and it was all good!) Tokyo Joes was great, The Oleander Room was amazing, very were treated like royalty by Robert and the food was very tasty. Cricketers was fun, great wings and fish and chips, but lacking a UK variety of beers( they only had a very strong Guinness.) The Royal Thai was a highlight at the SRC because of the whole cool atmosphere on the private island and the food was very good.. It was a tad bit windy while we ate our lunch, but we managed. Café de Paris was absolutely amazing and once we discovered it we had to visit there many afternoons for a scrumptious dessert and cappuccino, so good! We took a day trip to Negril, arranged by the front desk for a private driver "Mackmar" (there were four of us) to get us there safely. We enjoyed the Sandals resort, loved the large stretch of beach, it was less windy there so we were able to try the paddle boards. He took us to Rick's Café which was absolutely gorgeous and thrilling to watch someone dive from so high. We had a fantastic buffet lunch over looking the ocean. Each morning we had a delicious breakfast to start the day and each evening we came back to the Inn and enjoyed the laid back atmosphere that you can only get at a small resort. I want to also mention Daniel, who is one of the very friendly and enthusiastic entertainment directors, we had a blast doing karaoke with him!! Thanks everyone for making our vacation memorable and fun!
"GREAT HOLIDAY WE FEEL AT HOME HERE"
This is the 9th year we have visited the Carlyle and it is still a favourite of ours.We stayed the first week at the Whitehouse which is fab but very expensive. The Carlyle is small and friendly every year. Some people moan about street noise thats because it is on the strip. We dont even notice it and feel we are really seeing the real jamaica rather than being stuck in isolation on a big complex.Ask for a room looking over the garden it is much more relaxing. The shuttle bus to the Royal and Mo bay run on time .You are getting much more for your money staying at Carlyle. The staff at carlyle are wonderful. Doreen front of house is perfect at making you feel at home and is a great friend now.The bar staff Eric Lamar and Floyd are brilliant at mixing the drinks and great fun.The food is good and lots of choice .Aircraft noise is minimal it is much worse at mo bay as planes go right over resort. Some of the rooms needs updating but all are clean and fresh .All these things reflect in the price compared to the other resorts. We will be back next year with our friends from Columbus Ohio who we have spent the last 10 years with.Well done to all the staff here who made our holiday special
"Great staff, facilities in need of work"
My wife and I enjoyed our stay at Sandals Inn. The staff are excellent and really do their best to make you feel welcome. Floyd (Sunset bar) and Doreen (office manager) were fantastic , everyone says hello all the time and seem genuine when doing so. There was a lot of noise at night coming from the street which is not Sandals fault but they could do a better job sound proofing the rooms knowing this is a huge issue because everyone talks about it. It was great to be able to go to the other 2 MoBay properties or this would have been a long week but we knew that and used the resort as a bed and breakfast. The food was okay for breakfast, very good at Nibbles to excellent at the Carlyle. The shuttle runs all day except for driver breaks. Some days it is a pain depending when you get your reservation at the other resorts so it can make you leave much easier than you would like. Sandals Head Office really needs to put some money into this property to bring it up to Sandals standards. If my rating was only on service and food it would be 4+ but taking everything into account I can not give more than a 3.
