"Amazing first-time all-inclusive resort experience"
This was an amazing excursion from the very beginning to the very end. The resort is 80 minutes from the airport so we were provided a shuttle. The driver was very entertaining and very informative along the way. Upon arrival we met with the concierge who provided us with some adult beverages while were shown around the facility and to our room. We had a room with a view of the ocean, definitely worth the small price increase. The activities they provide were great, we went on multiple snorkeling trips (swam with a 6-7 foot spotted ray), paddle boarded, kayaked, and paid for some offsite excursions as well: we left the resort and rode horses around an old sugar cane farm and got to ride the horses through the ocean! Literally, only their heads are out of water as they swim through the course. We are not big loungers, but if you want to just enjoy the sun there is ample space along the beach with chairs and umbrellas as well as a large pool with a swim up bar. One of my personal apprehensions when traveling is tipping/gratuity (whom to tip, how much, etc) It was nice that this pressure was not present on this trip. In fact the one time we tried, we were politely denied. I've read this is different if you get the butler service (we did not). By far the reason I would recommend this though is the staff. These are clearly people who enjoy their jobs and have fun doing it. Richard in entertainment is definitely a guy to look for. He led the talent show, he's a very talented dancer (his moonwalk got everyone standing), and after hours he parties at the late night bar with the rest of us. The concierge Djvaan..... wow, what a guy. He spotted my girlfriend one morning and asked her what we were doing around 5pm (knowing it was our last night). He asked us to meet him at the piano bar and he would play/sing her a song. I'll be honest, I half expected him to forget. Nope, not only did he show up, but that man can play and sing! (Adele, Coldplay, Bob Marley, Sam Smith....) Another co-worker, Alex showed up and joined in and soon we had a small band playing personally for us. I also have to give a shout-out to the boat guys. Orlando and Paul for finding us some awesome dive sites. And Jesse the underwater papparazzi, he took some great photos of us, underwater and at sunset. And he's a goofball, always popping up around the resort snapping candid photos. Finally, I will say the food is spectacular. I had heard not to expect much from island food from friends who have gone to other locations (dominican republic, etc). This was not the case. The food here was robust in options, prepared well, and delicious. There was Jamaican options and non-Jamaican options so everyone could be happy. I went to the Japanese steak house on my last night and that was a vacation in itself. Our chef Geon sang to every dish he served in beat with his knife-work. I would also add that despite the catalog saying long pants are required (which I had not packed) they sat me in dress shorts. I usually don't return to places I've already been on vacation but I will return here in the future.
"A Unique Experience - but in a Good Way!"
This was not our 1st Sandals resort ( we are Diamond Level ) and 2nd time at SN. Stayed last week on November for 7 days with Butler service. We tried to get Club Mobay but was already at quota for our flight. Arrived mid Saturday afternoon so airport was full. We were put thru the new self serve section of customs which was fast. Within 30min we were at the Sandals lounge ( unfortunately it was closed ). Ride to the resort was less than stellar - counting the wait in the transport it took 3 hrs to reach SN. Driver was so slow we were getting passed by large transport busses and took almost 30min at the half way stop. Needleless to say was not impressed but that changed when we arrived. Staff the whole stay was the most friendly we have encountered at any resort. Can count on 1 hand the # of staff who didn't say hello / good morning during our stay. They ALL made this truly unique. Arrived at out room ( beachfront room 7101) but it really wasn't. We had a large grass area in front were chocolate buffet was held ( so convenient ) but many other rooms were much closer. Room was dated and not modern as others were updated and unusual for a Sandals the bed was not very comfortable. Didn't bother us although bathroom / shower area was very small considering a butler suite. During our stay we ate at all restaurants although Sundowner was doing reno's and was same area as Bayside. Meals were generally good although did not really enjoy the steak / beef tenderloin. Barefoot and Cucina Romano was good and as always we thought Kimonos was entertaining. Beef tenderloin was served at the return dinner on Tuesday night and that also was sub par. During the night they had a young man from Cuba play the violin and he was very good. Nice to see a change from the saxophone that usually accompanies this event. Also as previously some have stated, nice for Diamond level to receive an extra 2500 points. With over 12 different stays and 1/2 using the butler service, we always compare each visit to see what experience is best. Our 1st encounter with the butler service was at SEB in 2011 which has set the benchmark.... until now. We had Basil and Daron who did a fabulous job with the special surprises, attention to detail but also the ability to know what to do and when to do it. Outstanding and would truly recommend. 1 thing butlers in general need to get better at is when they reserve chairs - tell the guests ahead of time. As an early riser, I always reserve my own but on the 1st day its usually 10 or 11am before the butlers tell you that they reserved a chair somewhere else which then limits other guests from using it. Although we really don't like the Sandals " paparazzi " this was another unique experience. We didn't purchase any photos ( my wife is an amateur photographer taking over 600 pic's) but made some good friends with the team especially with Jerome. He gave my wife a few tips on camera set up and by the end of the stay, people were calling her the paparazzi. Even when she went for spa treatment #3 ( which all of them were good ) they had heard of her and wondered where the camera was. As for activities at SN, we did the sunset cruise to Rick's and Margaretville and had a blast. Legendary Sunsets in Negril but especially from the catamaran can't be beat. The last thing you must try is Great Big Mable - an air mattress sofa pulled by the water ski boat. You MUST try this. Loyalty desk was polite and professional and we booked 2 more vacations since a few great deals come up while there. Keep checking as things may arise unexpectedly that you won't find on the web site. Although our " beachfront " room wasn't on the beach, we could still see the ocean and many days we had our butler bring us lunch on the patio. Something we have never done before but may become a new trend. We did room service 1 night after getting back later from the Cat cruise and was delivered within 30 min, was warm and tasty - at least for room service food and menu. Usually we are pool people and being this is an older resort, the pools are quite small by other Sandals standards. We were at the beach each day and this was an enjoyable place to spend our time. Lots of different people you encounter but as known for Jamaica, always vendors wanting to " sell " you more than the local shells or wood carvings. Gets tiring after a while with " no thank you " repeated a dozen times a day. In the past the 1st " no " was enough to not be asked again but now a days you get asked constantly. Security always kept an eye on them so as not to infringe on the resort grounds and kept them moving. Special thanks to Kurt. All in all a great stay mainly due to the staff. We will be back again but not after staying at other Sandals properties 1st.
"Jamaica-Dates visited: 11/25/16-11/30/16"
First off I would like to say that I have visited many resorts so I have had the opportunity to make some real reviews. #1: This was our 2nd time in Jamaica and we love it here. The people are amazing and very friendly for the most part. #2: I was very disappointed with Sandals itself. The hotel defiantly needs some updating and TLC. The tiles in the pool were chipped off, the hot tub at the main pool was not working, and the carpets were absolutely filthy and dingy looking. #3: My biggest disappointment was the room. We chose a Caribbean Deluxe Garden View room and that was not what we got. The room faced the street with NO garden at all. We saw people and workers walking by all the time so we could not have the shades open at any time. The carpet in the room was dirty and the bathroom was very outdated. #4: When we called for room service we did not even have a menu of what to pick from. But the worst part was not even being able to get through. The phone would just ring and ring. VERY ANNOYING! #5: Another issue I have was the beach and lounging areas around the pool and ocean. We are early risers and would get down to the beach/pool around 6:30 a.m. All the lounge chairs and huts were TAKEN-with other guests name on them stating (reserved). When I asked one of the workers how we get a lounge chair – they told us that the chairs and huts are reserved already for people with butler service. ARE YOU KIDDING ME''' You are a multi-billion dollar resort and you don’t offer enough lounge chairs''' Not to mention the very small pools. #6: If you plan to do an excursion: MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE AWARE OF THIS!!! If you plan on going to Ricks Café- the café will pick you up for FREE and you can catch a cab back for about $6/$8 only! DO NOT PAY the $20/PER PERSON to get a ride there. I wish we would have known that #7: Some of the positives were the water activities. Those seemed to be available for the most part but the people taking 1000 photos nonstop can get annoying. #8: THIS IS BY FAR THE #1 COMPLAINT! I went to make dinner reservations to the Italian restaurant on my 2nd day there and I was told by the front desk that they had nothing available for the rest of my stay!!!! Can you believe that'' How is that even possible'! I was forced to eat at the same place 3 of the nights there. So we walked over to Beaches (owned by Sandals) and we were able to enjoy the very large pool and many dining options. They were able to give us reservations that very night. FYI: They do not have any bottled water by any of the bars. That I ridiculous! You have to go to the front desk to get bottles water that is WARM!!!!! UNACCEPTABLE! When I complained to the front desk about the room issues/lounge by the pool issues/eating issues- they did not offer any help at ANY TIME! All in all we had great weather and had a great time visiting Ricks Café. I would never visit a Sandals and pay that much again.
"One and done!"
We just returned last week from our first all inclusive vacation at Sandal's Negril. We chose this resort because several of our family members have been there and they have raved about the resort itself and how amazing the staff is. We met many other guests while we were there that felt the same way. Our experience was much different though. I'll start from the beginning - We were transported via Juta Bus which was ok but not great. Upon arrival to the resort, we were escorted to the welcome room upstairs where it appeared that no one knew what was going on. This remained the theme throughout our stay. We were escorted to our room which was in the middle of the resort on the top floor facing the ocean. Beautiful view and the room had once been great but is in need of refurbishment. The bathroom door did not latch and the sink was majorly cracked. Furniture was very worn but the bed was very comfortable. We also had issues with the air conditioner. Initially it would not shut off. After 3 calls to the desk and no resolution, I finally went down there. They sent maintenance and found that we didn't have the required remote control. Once the maintenance man shut off the air conditioner, hoards of large mosquitos exited the unit and lined the ceiling of our room. Management's solution was to move us temporarily to another unit for the night while they fumigated. We had to move all of our stuff out. I asked the manager to be sure to replace all of the linens and all of the liquor that was out in the open before we moved back late that following morning. They did not. I asked to talk with the general manager of the resort and was given what I guess was an assistant manager. She again told me that the items would be replaced. They were not. Then, later that day the air conditioner/mosquito problem repeated itself. Once again the staff was less than motivated to make things right. They suggested that they would spray while we ate dinner. My husband intervened and demanded they give us another room for the remainder of the stay. Not once did they check on us after that to see if we were satisfied. This is what I would have expected at a minimum. Water activities: Another attractive aspect of this resort is that there are many water activities included. We followed the daily printed schedule but were often told we could not take out the paddleboards, sailboats, kayaks because conditions were not ideal. We travel to beach properties frequently and beieve me, the conditions were not bad. They wouldn't run the glass bottom boat one morning because they said the conditions were rough. We saw other boats going out though. Staff: There were very few staff members that were personable. At no time did I feel as if we were pampered or cared for. One exception was the housekeeper - we tipped her everyday and she was great but bartenders and servers were not. We received inconsistent answers to our questions regarding activities and the front desk staff couldn't even get our departure time right. They notified us that we had to check out by 7:00 AM but it ended up being 9:00 AM. Food: Inconsistent. We had a good meal the first night at the beach seafood restaurant but 3 nights later it was horrible. Breakfast buffet was ok and they had a beach party one night that was good as well but overall I would say that the food was average. We did go down to the Fireman's Lobster Pit one afternoon and that was excellent (it is not part of the resort). I will say that the beach was beautiful and I loved the snorkeling and scuba diving there. Also, our return trip to the airport was much nicer than the ride there. Not sure why they used different companies though. Overall, I would not recommend Sandals to anyone and I doubt if we ever return.
