"Al Bandar - 5 star service and facilities in the heart of the resort"
We stayed in the Al Bandar for one week over easter and had a fabulous time. The Al Bandar is the middle one of three making up the Barr Al Jissah resort - middle in that is at the centre of the resort between the other two Shangri La hotels of the resort and middle in that is the mid range hotel of the three hotels. However, the Al Bandar is very much a 5 star hotel in its own right, although you can use the restaurants of any of the three hotels. We had a spacious deluxe sea view room on the upper floor with a beautiful view and a balcony which provided comfortable furnishings and a lovely view. Great shower, excellent toiletries, and lots of fluffy white towels., and a lovely bedroom , which the staff worked hard to let us into early when we arrived very tired from an overnight flight The resort is far from anything else and as a result we ate in the hotel restaurants for every meal - and that is pretty expensive, with most meals for two coming in at around £100 without alcohol. We enjoyed the seafood restaurant the best and ate there three times - a lovely beachside location, with superb service and really great food. Breakfast in the main buffet restaurant was good with a wide range of hot and cold dishes, and a good choice of fruit juices. It might be worth noting that when they say it closes at 11.00am, they really mean it, and the buffet is almost totally cleared by 11.05. We also enjoyed the meals served at the beachside Circles cafe, both served in the seating area of the cafe and by the very helpful waiters who serve food and drinks on the grass areas between the pool and the beach. There are lots of sun loungers, and although we didn't get up early, and the hotel was full, the really helpful staff on the grass area always found us sunbeds with shade protection. They also brought free water in a cool box, and supplied our orders for other drinks very quickly whenever we felt the need. The reception staff were very helpful and pleasant and check out, even at 6.00am, was very efficient and friendly. The downsides were few, but for us they were mainly about the Samba restaurant - located in the cheapest of the three hotels, the Al Waha. It is billed as Latin American, but served oriental food, and no Latin American, the night we visited. Queuing for barbecue, rather like school dinners, at almost £50 per person was ridiculous, and our impression of the Al Waha in general was that it is significantly down market of the rest of the resort, and not worth the prices charged. We were very glad to be in the Al Bandar. The beach at Al Bandar is very pleasant and uncrowded In April the water was warm and it was only a very few steps to our sunbeds on the grass. There are stones, maybe 50 yards from the water's edge, and warnings of jelly fish, but we were careful visitors to the sea every day and encountered no problems at all. We loved the Al Bandar. We travel a lot, and never go back to same place twice - but we are likely to make an exception for this place - it is lovely and, though expensive, worth every penny.
"Amazing & Relaxing Holiday"
We have enjoyed our 3 days stay at this superior hotel. The feedback as follows: Rooms are big, clean and well furnished. Services are very good, wifi free, car parking free, and the staff is really supportive and smiling all the time. Swimming pools are very nice and clean. Food is really good. Hope to come back again!
My husband and I have been visiting this hotel for the past 8 years and love it. The resort is surrounded by stunning mountains, we always stay at Al Bandar and find it to be excellent. All restaurants are great with a good selection of food, we particularly like Bait Al Bahr, fish restaurant. All staff are professional, helpful and work hard, in particular the pool attendants who keep you well hydrated. Reading a few of the reviews they are very unfair and inaccurate so I would recommend people take little notice of them! We certainly couldn't smell any unsavoury smells, on occasions can be from children who are not properly supervised by parents, who seem to be reliant on lifeguards keeping them safe. Nothing to put you off though! It isn't a cheap resort but to get what you pay for and money well spent if you want a relaxing holiday.
"This Place gets better"
I mean what can you say this is our 3rd visit and it just gets better each time, this time we were a group of 10 youngest 4 yrs oldest 59 and everyone had a fantastic time. Food now we understand the places to go and how to utilize the fantastic in room dining is brilliant, the hotel facilities great super clean and super friendly I or none of my family can find any negatives to report. We stayed 7 nights every day was pure pleasure, the hotel was full as it was over Easter but the place never felt crowded or to busy. Everything was well managed the rooms were spotless and superb, and the staff every single one from reception, house keeping, pool boy restaurant staff etc were brilliant friendly helpful and polite, marvelous Enjoyed it so much again have booked again for next year If you have the opportunity to visit this superb hotel then do not miss it, it really is worth it, Well done to all at Shangri-La and thanks for making our weeks stay so utterly enjoyable.
"Not up to the standards of Shangri-La"
I am not sure what is wrong with Shangri-La hotels located abroad. They are not up to the standards of a luxury hotel! Anyways, it was a very disappointing experience. First, we asked the hotel to give us two connecting or next to each other rooms when we booked. We have three kids of 2, 5 and 7 yo. Each time we wrote about it, the staff replied they cannot do anything before we check -in! We checked in and they gave us rooms 2128 and 2133 at Al Bandar. Obviously, very distant from one another. They promised they will sort it out the day after. Nothing changed until we checked out four days later! Imagine how worried we were each time about our kids... it was even more difficult on the day of our departure when I had to run frantically back and forth the corridor trying to pack the family of five on time! Secondly, the staff is not properly trained. They pick up the phone and say "hello" with a sigh! I complained and requested they were telling their name and were addressing us by our names too. They lasted one day and were back to impersonal "hello".Thirdly, I am not sure what the men in traditional Omani clothes are doing standing in the lobby. They see you coming, they don't come up to you asking if you need anything. They just stand there....seriously! And they are staff! So, when you ask them to call a taxi, they ask your room number. Why'! Then they call their relative or a friend. You stay there in the meantime and wait when that friend of theirs arrives finally to the hotel. On the day of our departure they called us a car reaking of vomit! We were in a hurry to catch our flight, so we had to get in! The food at the pool restaurant is horrible, especially at Samba at AL Waha. I had to send all dishes back. Nachos con carne had stiff and not melted cheese on them, the smoked chicken salad was a mountain of shredded lettuce with frozen slices of chicken smeared in a supposedly BBQ sauce. The Australian beef burger was extremely fatty and tasted of old beef! The banks of famous lazy river had an overpowering smell of pooh and pee. The water itself was reaking of chlorine and our bathing suits were completely bleached by it! The snorkeling in front of Al Waha is not safe as it is full of speed boats. The water is not clean because the boats leave a lot of dirt behind and it's impossible to see anything. The beautiful setting around is not the merit of the hotel.
