"My 4th stay and still great, I'll be back"
I'v been to the Maldives with my family 6 times over the years and 4 times out of the 6 times I stayed in Shangri-la. simply this is the place to stay. pros: - Excellent 6 star service. - nice beaches. - 3 restaurants to chose from. - best SPA ever. - staff very very friendly and will go the extra Mile for you. - medical clinic is at a very High standards with compression chamber for Divers if needed Cons: - need to take a 70 Min small plane trip from after you arrive to Mali to reach the resort. - Bugy service need to have better response time. - kidz Club is small and can easily be crowded. - villas stared to show some aging and need refurbishing soon. recommendation: if the management of the resort will listen to me I advice them to establish a cocktail Bar/ Coffee shop / Ice cream Bar in the ocean side of the resort island at the Golf course as it will be a good place to end the daylight with cool wind breeze coming from the Ocean while listening and watching the Indian Ocean waves Bond the shore ( no Music playing only nature Music ). this bar have law light condition so it can continue to operate during Nigh time so visitor can also watch the stars, this will be a good addition to the resort and a good alternative to the Guests going every Day to the M lunch as During sun set the sun is directly in your face and it is bit hot and Humid lagoon side. moreover, almost all guests can enjoy sun set from there Villas. when you make it to shangril la try walking during sun set to the golf course and taking pictures there specially at end of the Golf Ocean side not lagoon side.
"Exceeded our expectations with a fabulous stay"
We stayed at the Shangrila from February 24- March 2, 2017 and were so impressed with the resort and the friendliness of the staff and the excellent service. The meet and greet service at the airport was good, and they took us to a shared lounge. The flight from Male was about 70 minutes and then there is a quick 10 minute speedboat ride. You are met at the dock and given a tour of the Island and then taken straight to your Suite where they do a quick checkin. I was very impressed with the Suite, everything was much better than we expected and looked brand new. We stayed in a sunset overwater villa. We decided next time we probably would not spend the extra to stay in a sunset villa because we ended up at the bar for happy hour at sunset time anyway! The bed was extremely comfortable, the bathroom was fabulous and great water pressure, great hairdryer and amenities and even a walk in closet! Even better than the facilities was the friendliness of the employees. Every single person stops what they are doing to great you with a hand to their heart. Even the street sweeper. There was not one person who didn't great us, not one! Now, the service... I would say that everyone except for our Island host really exceeded our expectations. I would like to say a special thank you to all the waiters at breakfast for getting us our special fruits and indian food, Ash the Manager at Dr. Ali's for the wonderful service, Alice the operations manager for the personalized attention, Chef Singh for the wonderful Indian food at breakfast, and Deepak for the yummy cocktails at M Bar! They have photographers on the island and we did choose to do the photo session for about 45 minutes and ended up buying some pics. A few were fabulous. We used the spa for a nice 4 hour couples treatment and it was excellent. We also went on a snorkeling trip which was great too, although we could go snorkeling right off of our deck of villa 112 and saw plenty of beautiful fish nearby. I would like to mention that we also stayed at Jumeirah Vitavelli after our stay here and I will be writing a review for them as well. My husband and I felt that we preferred our villa here and the service here as well as the drinks. The breakfast was better at Jumeirah. If I could have had a plunge pool at this resort I would have had everything I needed! We stayed half board, but mostly ate at Dr. Ali's as we both love ethnic foods and the 90 per person was more than enough there. We also ate at the French restaurant once and at Jaavu once. My husband liked the French, I didn't care for it much but I'm allergic to seafood so not much to choose from for me. I would not hesitate to choose this resort if you are on the fence. We were truly impressed and happy with our stay.
"BEST resort in Maldives. By far."
We headed to Shangri-La's Villingili for our Honeymoon, and I must say our choice was perfect. We did at least 3 weeks of intense investigation and took the final decision days before flying. So if you are still hesitant of where to go, this resort is amazing and would definitely recommend it. You might only do Maldives once, so better do it properly. PEOPLE The service is another level. Everyone (and I mean everyone) goes beyond so you worry about nothing and enjoy your holidays. They don't react, they anticipate. Not just your host, but everyone at the resort. From the guys sweeping the beach, to the reception people. Buggy drivers, waiters, diving centre, gym, cleaning people, absolutely everyone is incredibly friendly and does a stellar job and are proud of doing it. THE ISLAND Big private island. Loads of vegetation. Clean and calm. Maldives can be crowded and loud and this resort has a great calmed atmosphere and provides absolute privacy. We used the bikes a lot to move around, but buggies are arranged at all times if you don't feel like moving much. VILLAS We stayed in a Pool Villa for 2 days. A Tree House Villa for another couple of days. And Water Villa for the last 2. We loved every single villa we stayed at. Impeccable, modern, fantastic views, great outdoor showers, pool, service. Everything was amazing and designed to perfection. My favourite one was the Water Villa and Whispering Palms. RESTAURANTS All 3 are really good. One is Asian (Dr Ali), another one is Mediterranean (Fashala) and Javhuu is the main one (International). They are all great. Food and service is perfect. Wonderful views and atmosphere. BREAKFAST Buffet breakfast was included, and it's absolutely fabulous. Anything you could think of you'll have it there. It's amazing. Period. DIVING We did 4 dives (2 tank dives trips). Service was excellent. Professional and friendly. Clean and tidy. We saw turtles, sharks, a huge manta, tunas, napoleons, eels, and thousands of colourful fishes. Would definitely recommend to take at least two diving trips. The people leading the Diving Centre are amazing. TRANSFERS and AIPORT Once you get to Male someone just welcomes you and takes you to the lounge to wait for your next domestic flight. It's an extra hour and a half trip to Shangri-La from Maldives Capital Male. It can be tedious since you've just did an 11 hours flight, but I can assure you it's worth the time.
"A superb place to wind down and relativt."
My wife and I spent 8 nights on the resort, 4 nights each in a water villa and a beach villa. We were greeted by a resort representative as we came thought arrivals at Malé airport. From that point on we were attended to by resort staff until we departed from the same airport 9 days later. Without exception all members of the resort staff was helpful, accommodating, service minded, hospitable and friendly, be it beach cleaners, restaurant-, housing- or other members of staff. All facilities were of good standard, well maintained, clean and tidy. Beds are comfortable and bathrooms generously sized with ample supply of good quality towels. Breakfast service is exelent with a wide choice of food and drinks that all are tasty. Restaurant food is good while prices resembles that of a Michelin Star restaurant none of the three restaurants on the resort meet that standard. This resort is truly exeptional and well worth a visit. I have no preference on water or beach villa, they are both very good but still different. I do not rate this at 5 stars only because at these prices it is supposed to be exeptional and this resort is, but it is not extraordinary when compared to others in same category. As a conclusion we are both happy to have visited the resort.
"Great resort for families!"
Me and my husband have stayed in many of the Maldives top hotels such as Soneva, Anantara and Huvafen Fushi, but now that we had a family we felt that we needed to find somewhere that really catered to the needs of our little ones whilst also feeling luxurious but not being too expensive on the budget - and Shangri-La was wonderful! I found tripadvisor to be so helpful when choosing where to stay, I thought that I would share my experience to help others - so here it is ... Getting there There is no doubt that biggest challenge about the resort is the distance that it is from Male and the fact that you need to wait in Male airport for several hours and then take an extra flight which can be between 1-2 hours long and may not always run to schedule. I know some people break up the trip with an overnight stay in Male which is a good idea. If you are a highly stressed traveller I wouldn't recommend it as it is exhausting. Otherwise you just have to grin and bear it and know that you can lie on a beautiful beach and recover to get over it when you finally arrive! Rooms We spent one week in a Beach Villa with our 5 year old son and 4 month old baby and it was heaven. The reason we chose Shangri La was due to the big size and great layout of the beach villa. Most of the other hotels I have stayed in have been very compact, but here we had ample space inside and out which was really fantastic. There is one master bedroom with huge beautiful ensuite bathroom and then a separate living room with TV which acted as the bedroom and playroom for our 5-year old. This meant we had some privacy and also didn't fall over any toys! The garden area was excellent with masses of space around the pool and a hammock for relaxing in. The beaches are not necessarily as perfect as some others that we have seen in the Maldives because the hotel looks out at Gan island so isn't as secluded as it could be, but it was pretty nearly perfect and we got over that pretty quickly. Baby support The hotel was absolutely brilliant at providing everything needed for our baby. They gave us all the necessary equipment including bottle steriliser, baby bath, cot as well as nappies and also a Maclaren stroller. This meant that we didn't have to pack so much which was great as the flight to Gan has quite a strict baggage allowance! Kids facilities Our 5 year old was in love with the kids club. He genuinely wanted to spend every day there. They don't talk about it much on the website, but it has a great soft play area with slides and a ball pit and all the kids had hours of fun. They also had a fantastic agenda of activities every day so he would get very excited to take part in things like the crab racing and nighttime flashlight tag as well as the nature walk and arts and crafts. Really great for this age group, whereas I think teenagers would have to be happy to do more sports focused activities Food Some of the food was great but some a little disappointing. The breakfast was a nice buffet with the pancake station making funny shapes for the kids. Jaavu restaurant near the pool was also really nice for lunch overlooking the beach and had great salads and other dishes. The best dinner venue was the Fashala fine dining - I had a fantastic tasting menu with paired wine which was really delicious and good value at $155. However beware of the room service as we were not impressed. The pizzas tasted very bad and there was a very limited selection of nice healthy salads or mediteranean dishes. The only good things we got from the room service menu were when we did a special valentines dinner on our beach and ordered the lobster and tiger prawns - these were superb and I couldn't fault them!! Special memories Managing to get our son to learn how to ride a bike without stabilisers and watching him having so much fun cycling around the island. The glass bottom boat trip was also fantastic and we saw lots of turtles. However best memory was the special valentines dinner we had on our private beach - picture perfect. Value for money Compared to many other luxury Maldives hotels, we felt that this provided the quality that we wanted without being overpriced. The service and facilities were really top notch - and we are very fussy travellers that have stayed in the best hotels all around the world! Genuinely a really fair price for what good quality they are offering. We also had an Entertainer voucher which gave us a great discount and a free night's stay! Overall verdict I would definitely come back to this resort and even though it is a long trip, it is worth it in the end when you get there. Highly recommended.
