"Best choice in Salvador' "
Reading some of the previous TripAdvisor reviews I was wondering if I was staying in a different hotel. "Interior needs updating"' Umm, I don't think so! It presents as a fresh and sensitive refurbishment of a classic hotel. "Rooms not clean" ... mine was immaculate. "Dated pool area" whoever wrote that must have been somewhere else or does not understand the architecture in question. "Limited breakfast choices" is simply an absurd statement - the breakfast offers an excellent array and even a made to order omelette bar. Rather than offering a few passing comments I shall give comprehensive description of the hotel for those who are interested. Sheraton Hotel da Bahia is an excellent choice in Salvador. It is very well located in a pleasant part of town well positioned between the famed historic centre and the Porto da Barra beaches. Both of those are great places to visit, but neither offers good quality accommodation or particularly safe surrounds. The hotel was opened in 1952 and was the first international standard hotel in Bahia. Such is its architectural significance that is is listed as an historic place. It is a wonderful example of mid century modernist design and many original features have been very sensitively preserved, but not at the expense of modern convenience. When you enter look above the reception and elevators and enjoy the wonderful full width frieze of every-day scenes of Bahia life as it was in the 1950's, in modernist concrete sculpture. To your right is a beautiful bar area with a screen of ceramics looking through to the restaurant and terrace beyond. Go to the pool and enjoy the sparkling clear water (rare in Brazil for some reason) with a wall sculpture of glass mosaic tiles in the background. Nice furniture and a great bar area complete this very pleasant outdoor area. Rooms at 25 sq. m. are not huge but certainly adequate and have been totally updated but in a style appropriate to the original building. Bathrooms are very modern and well equipped and the beds are exceptionally comfortable. The restaurant is very good as is the lobby bar though you can wait a little longer than one would expect for service and food items. The lavish breakfast is an exception. The Sheraton Club is a total disappointment and out of place in this otherwise excellent hotel. Small, cramped, no staff and hardly any canapés or beverages during the evening and no staff to serve in any event. I don t know why they even bother with it and hardly any guests seem to use the club, for good reason. I only went there once and left quickly. Don't bother paying extra for lounge access and spend the balance on drinks by the pool! Reception staff and most of the restaurant and pool staff are exceptional. In Brazil it is not fair to blame reception staff for delays - the government requires them to gather all sorts of documentation and seemingly all Latin Americans like to argue about the bill on departure - all of this adds time. I found reception staff to be exceptionally obliging, pleasant and very happy to go the extra mile to help. This is particularly valuable here as there does not appear to be a concierge desk to assist guests with general matters. Porters were also excellent and assisted willingly. All reception staff I spoke to had very good English and other staff members always had some English and made the effort to understand. All staff are very well groomed and present a professional and polished appearance. The Human Resources department is clearly going to great lengths with selection and training and the results are very positive. Security is good without being obtrusive, unlike many other hotels in Brazil and in stark contrast to the horrible experience I had with security at the Orthon Bahia Palace hotel (see separate review on that one!). In conclusion I have visited Salvador on 5 occasions and this was by far the best hotel experience I have had in the city. I thoroughly recommend it for anyone travelling to Salvador.
"Dirty rooms.....I am amazed how it is under Sheraton standards...the hotel needs lot of improvements"
I stayed during the new year's vacation in this hotel..The staff, the food the ambient were excellent but the cleanliness of the hotel is something I never ever found in any hotel in the world.. The rooms are extremely dirty, the bed sheets are dirty, they don't clean the the rooms.. I took pictures of the dirty things I found first day I stayed in the room, same things stayed for all my stay.. I called the manager and she came with the cleaning supervisor and no action was done!! I found the Sheraton da Bahia the only dirty hotel I stayed in during all my trips in my life... I will never ever stay in this hotel again.
" Sheraton in a iffy location"
We stayed for two nights at this Hotel which is across from a large park but short way away from the beach and historic center. You cannot walk anywhere from the hotel as the area nearby is not very safe. The salvation for this location is Uber, which are very cheap and very quick. An Uber to the barre beach area is something like $2 or $3. The Hotel itself has been remodeled and the rooms are adequate. The bathroom is well laid out and bed's are fresh. The common areas are a bit worn and pool dated. The staff here were just ok. SPG gold status gave us a higher room but not a welcome gift or other amenity. I would not pay for lounge access, as unstaffed and saw ants on some of the pastries. We did not go Inside the Golden Tulip but this area is much better and safer. It's a little far from the historic center but with Uber it's easy to reach . I would not recommend staying in the historic center as it's unsafe after dark. As Starwood and Marriott are talking about enhancing the Sheraton brand, this is one that needs some work.
"A good start to our trip"
My husband and I were taking an extended vacation in Bahia and started our trip here. Everything was pleasant and as expected with this brand. The exceptional portion was the breakfast, it was excellent. Perhaps the best offerings that we had our entire stay. I'd stay here again. It was not close to the beaches though, if that is a concern for others.
"A tale of two cities"
We stayed two days in this hotel and it was like we have been in two completely different places, the first day it was a disaster, nobody to help you with the cases, long wait in checking with people waiting around uninterested, unfriendly checking and at dinner, even if empty we had to wait over 30 minutes per dish for basic dishes. The second day was completely different people much more helpful, polite, attentive and diligent. A couple of other things to improve. The swimming pool didn't not look clean enough, it has a tinge of green that should not happened in a hotel of the Sheraton category. Breakfast is very poor again for this hotel, we where in other 5 hotels in the tour and this was by far the worse. Only sweets and cakes are adequate in my opinion. Overall a Sheraton with standard much lower that you would expect for the brand
