"Not as close to the ship docks as I was hoping"
Took a cruise and wanted to stay close to the ship dock, Celebrity ship dock is about two miles away from the hotel. This hotel is close to the shopping and dining in Old San Juan thou. It is clean and comfortable. The beds are doubles, not queens. The breakfast is very expensive, but there is a Walgreens right around the corner.
"Location, Location, Location"
We spent two nights at Sheraton Old San Juan before departing on a cruise, and the location of the hotel couldn't have been better. All the sights, restaurants and nightlife of Old San Juan are within walking distance (though everything there is up a somewhat steep hill from the hotel). And the docks (Muelle 1 and 3) for our cruise were right across the street. It was shorter to walk with our luggage than to take a cab. Unfortunately, there's not much to recommend about the hotel other than the location. Our room was extremely basic; the furniture was all mismatched and looked like it came from a garage sale. Towels and toiletries were the bare minimum. There was a no view and the TV would periodically go blank for awhile. There was a safe, and a coffee maker, and the room was clean - though I had to specifically request that our room be cleaned when it had not been cleaned by 4:00 pm. It certainly wasn't what I would expect of a Sheraton - it was more like a budget motel. But with the location, it stays very busy so I suppose there is no incentive to improve the hotel. It does have a nice little rooftop pool and hot tub to unwind after touring old San Juan. So it was fine for touring for a couple nights - but I wouldn't want to stay longer!
"Nice Sheraton at Cruise Ship docking area"
Overall very good stay. Nice upgrade to Room 733, much appreciated. Great location, next to cruise ship area although parking was a bear. Front desk staff very nice. Reasonable room rate for heart of Old San Juan, walk to everything. Only one bad experience -- breakfast buffet was weak for two reasons: food quality poor, potatoes (uncovered' for some reason) were cold, leathery bacon, watery coffee 😩; secondly our server(Xiomara) was sweet but did not grasp the Plat breakfast benefit, presented her with card 2x whereupon she tossed it on table and brought us bill anyway-- glad I checked final invoice because it was on final statement. Otherwise good stay at a well located Sheraton.
"Hotel Location was PERFECT but. SOME policies need to change for their guests."
My husband and i joined a couple who are dear friends in Old San Juan Jan11-14 2017,,,,,, So The memories are still fresh. They are mostly Positive but the HOTEL COULD have made them Perfect. We Stayed at Sheraton in Old San Juan because the other couple had booked their mini vacation there earlier. IT WAS A PERFECT LOCATION to see everything we wanted to in our short 3 day stay. While we did not do Every site most tourists do, San Juan is a walkable city and best seen on foot But your feet and your back have to work and mine were less than perfect. I'm not a complainer Isolve my own problems, I have been a teacher and a nurse for 50 years.. but even I need a bit of help occassionly The cruise ships dock across the street so it can be a busy spot when the ships are in port . We were lucky and had only two on Thursday( and both left by late afternoon) and none Friday or Saturday when two 3 others arrived in the late morning. Thus without passengers, the open air trolley( free !) and the Double Decker Hop On Hop Off Red Bus ($30 per ) were half empty. OUR BEST experience was the Hop on Hop Off bus tour because of our guide SO KNOWLEDGEABLE and SO honest! Perfect English too.... but educated in R. I He has an MS in tourism and it shows! We ate at Several established sites but not always what was recommeneded. they are all within 3-4 blocks of our hotel. Walk ! Its a great way to really explore! Breakfast with locals at Mallaora the first day and The El Neson, a known chain on the second. Hotel breakfasts were too pricey. . El Nenon has little atmosphere but Great people. It's opposite a beautiful square full of pigeons with Three KIngs displayed and near the Cathedral. It was really like home. The gentleman's company at the next table was so interesting! He asked our opinion of our new administration and was a Veteran of WWII AND KOREA.. so many of our military are PR.....The coffee was great too.On our last day we visited a small place opposite the hotel for a light breakfast Right on harbor, it was EXCELLENT with coffee and latte and pastries. Locally grown.coffee is a PROTEST of CocoCola company which bought many plantations here tha en mixed the PR coffee with Mexican coffee. Local merchants by from local growers still! In Protest! Recommend both the fort and the castle( one ticket at $5 each person) and walking along the coast between the two ! WOW what a coast! Visit the Museum of the Americas near the castle San Phillippe.. You will learn a LOT about how YOUNG the U.S .really is and how MUCH Puerto Rico has given to this country. Interestingly enough they are NOT a state, a protetorate a commonwealth or ' what else' but the currency, language, and signs are all Americanized. Too Much else is also .as it turns out! Interesting and beautiful buildings including their Capitol and the guide there. We need to be aware of what can happen without ethics in government however. We enjoyed excellent meals at Al Dante, 2nd oldest Italian resturant in North American, and Mojitos which is truly traditional . Service there is MORE than relaxed but that is the idea! OUR Best meal was on the last day at El Asador this Looks like an old hascienda Even the afternoon shower was kept away by a protective awning. It is only 4 blocks from hotel You think you are in Spain. Pris Fix menu was amazing Pina Colada OUTSTANDING and atmosphere to die for! And we were alone! The Cathedaral is a great stop.... cat and all..... so is the Parc des Palomas and the view! But the bus tour of this side of the island is amazing even with the B bus stop Great way to see the sites without paying $$$$ cab fare! Three things that surprised me: The SAFETY of old SanJuan.. police EVERYWHERE!,The trade winds prevent you from noticing the humidity and the UNWILLININGNESS of the HOTEL to make simple accommodations even with advance information. I am suffering from some weird back malady which prevents me from sleeping for too long in a traditional bed. I have solved my problem by bringing a folding beach lounge chair with us when we travel by car but such cannot travel on a plane. While I contacted the Hotel in advance and while they WILL allow installation of refrigerator in a room at NO CHARGE if Medicall necessary(') they WOULD NOT and DID NOT take one of their lounge chairs from the pool area( there were many there...., all unused!..... nor set it up in our room even tho there was ample room NOR did they provide an additional sheet to me . I was forced to sleep most of the night in the single chair in the room and improvise! My tripp COULD have been greatly enhanced by a simple accommodation It iwas a requestand heaven knows they seem to have AMPLE staff! I used to be in charge of an ER so I KNOW how to make things happen They didn't. They also NEVER communicated their decisions. Why' Because they really SHOULD be changed! Let's hope they are! Also on Friday no bath mat, facecloths or pool towels were left in our room. That didn't matter as much as the fact that the room was SKIPPED by Housekeeping ENTIRELY It was . Not the evening staff fault they were great, At rates Sheraton charges it should not happen... even on Friday the 13th.! At least their happy hour and waiter in their resturant made up for this. Juan was Excellent! Gracias Juan for the recomenation on the appetizer! The Hotel is located in a perfect spot. The city is amazing. WARNINBG: The Airport is VERY COLD and security can be slow! TNT is clear and LOOKS like some shampoos. It is VERY powerful however. Why the concern with 4 oz containers, shoes etc I can't explain however in PR they ARE concerned.! One of our LONGEST security checks Our flight to Tampa scheduled to depart at 7:15 on Jan 14th FINALLY left at 12:30 AM on Jan 15th ! Jet Blue Did lssue vouchers to each passenger for food but this was as most shops were closing in the boarding area. Another first. But stuff happens IF you haven't been to Puerto Rico start in Old San Juan .You'll be well fed, happy and amazed! We were!
"Right in Old San Juan"
We chose this hotel because we thought it was right next to the cruise dock for our Celebrity ship. Turns out it is a 10 minute drive away. However, you can't beat the location if you are interested in touring around old San Juan. You can walk to both fortresses from here, a Starbucks is 2 blocks away, a Walgreens and Senior Frogs are next door. Some rooms have a nice view of the harbor. The rooms are standard Sheraton rooms, lobby is a bit small but is a sizeable property for the old city.
