"Nice rooms, great location, ridiculous pricing"
Rooms, particularly beds were wonderful, location and setting was beautiful. Room prices in line with market, room service, restaurant food etc. pricing was extortion. $47 for a burger and coke, $20 for an egg dish in restaurant for breakfast....plus a million markups.
"Shutters on the Beach"
This is a lovely hotel for the most part. The hall carpets are worn and the rooms are small. The hotel lobby and bar areas are quaint, but quite noisy most of the time. It has an excellent beach location with easy access to the walkway. The areas surrounding the hotel, including downtown Santa Monica, are littered and full of homeless people who have no problem approaching and asking for money. I even had this happen while I was sitting at an outdoor restaurant having breakfast! The pool is very nice and quiet with plenty of seating. The hotel staff are very accommodating. Our room was kept clean and well stocked with fresh linens, etc. The beach is beautiful, but again not very clean other than a small section that is raked daily. The Santa Monica Pier reminds me of the piers in the northeast. Lots of performers, high-priced souvenirs, junk food, and crowds of people. I won't be returning to this part of CA. I much prefer the Santa Barbara area or northern CA.
"Rooms are tired"
The rooms here need a serious refresh. The bathroom and bed and furniture are all old. It doesn't feel luxurious. The lobby is ok, and the pool area is below average. Their sister hotel's pool (just south) is better.
"A delightful stay at Shutters"
Check in was smooth from the minute the valet people met us on the way in the door. We were extremely early, but they got us checked in with no hassle. Dillon the concierge was awesome. He recommended a great Italian restaurant (which we went to twice!) Giovanni and Greg were great at the pool!! We never had to ask for service! Room was clean and housekeeping was fantastic! Loved sitting on the deck watching people stroll by. This is a beautiful property. Only small complant was service at pool bar on Thursday Sept 15. That attendant was terrible. Was more interested in his phone than the guests. Other than that, food was excellent, service impeccable and everyone went out of their way to make sure everything was top notch. I will return and would recommend this hotel!!
Check-in was smooth and the rooms are great! A premium Ocean view room is a must (on a high floor). The food, service and atmosphere were all of a high standard. The location is excellent and you are generally left to feel very relaxed and at home. It's great taking the hotel's bikes out everyday along the beach and also enjoying the sunset from the bar. I look forward to returning.
