"Lived up to expectations"
The nicest hotel in Uruguay I stayed at. Beautiful building with all the amenities you'd expect from a true 4 star hotel. Beautiful but smallish swim pool with saunas and gym is on ground level. English speaking helpful staff. They arranged my airport pick up with a third party with additional charge ($35). Casino is on the first floor. If your room is on top (4th) floor than in order to go to the gym you'd have to go 1 st floor then walk across the hall to another set of elevators to get to gym/spa area. Might be confusing. Breakfast is European style higher quality food. Good location with stores and restaurants in walking distance.
"This great building deserved much more…"
The hotel is located in a majestic building build in the early 1900s. It was totally renovated recently. They did an outstanding job of preserving the old hotel features and adding some modern touches. It is in a good location. Nice residential neighborhood halfway between the airport and the business district. Several restaurants and bars close by. The hotel looks out over the Rio de la Plata. If you don’t know Montevideo, the Rio de la Plata is an unattractive muddy river where the strong winds are a constant. The rooms are relatively small. They were also refurbished recently. Not my taste, but not unattractive. I had a non smoking room, but my room had a distinct smell of cigarette smoke. I would have asked to change rooms, but it was so late I didn’t want to deal with the hassle, although I wish I had. Small bathroom as well, but it was functional. In room wifi worked well. So far, not bad. However several issues really spoiled the visit: There is a casino in the basement of the hotel that detracted immensely from the experience. It is a depressing place with low class, derelict gamblers scattered throughout the cavernous casino. It is a huge place that couldn’t have had more than 50 customers. 75% of the gambling area was closed/roped off. One might argue all casinos are filled with derelict gamblers, however picture some dive casino along the Mississippi River and you won’t be far off. This majestic building deserves far more. Upon exploring the lobby, we stumbled upon a bar which looked like a great place for a drink. When we tried to enter, we were barred and told it was for the casino VIPs/high rollers. What a joke. The place did not have a single customer. There wasn’t a VIP or high roller within 100 miles of this hotel/casino. The restaurant was a joke (see 1921 Restaurant review). Finally upon checking out, I was informed that all the tips I left had to be paid in CASH…and they do not provide a receipt for the tips! The receptionist advised me that I was not obliged to pay the tips, but I wasn’t going to let the employees suffer for an outrageous decision made by management. Having said all of this, the Montevideo hotel scene does not appear to be replete with good options. As such, I don’t know if there is a better hotel in Montevideo, but I will try somewhere else before coming back here. Was this review helpful' Please let me know by clicking on the button below. "Great & stylish property & good service"
This is a very nice historic property with a lot of cham & allure. The rooms are extremely nice & well appointed. Service is good and food excellent. The location is a bit isolated, so you need to take that into account. But taxis are easily called and take you anywhere.
Historic, chic, regal looking, upscale hotel located a short drive from the city historic center. The lobby is very impressive. The staff is super friendly and the service is top notch! We had a room with a bathtub in the room itself, perfect for a romantic bubble bath for 2.
Perfect place to be but the cooked breakfast is horrible , they cant get the scrabbled eggs right and when you order eggs they take 20 mins , hotel its nice and don't uses the laundry service unless your loaded . as its $9 a shirt
