"Great hotel within walking distance of University of Miami Hospital"
The hotel staff were so caring and helpful to us during our stay. We were there due to a family member's hospitalization at University of Miami. The hotel is very close to the hospital - you can walk there or take a shuttle between the hotel and the hospital. Breakfast is included in your stay which is another great amenity.
"Dirty hotel and rude staff"
Being Platinum Elite for life rewards members at Marriott, we know how we are supposed to be treated when we check in. Someone needs to freshen up the training with the staff at this property. We checked in with the app as we always do. Instead of the normal "We've been expecting you", we were met with short, curt, unsmiling questions by Kandi, who then took several minutes looking angry and confused at her computer. We asked if there was an issue and she just told us to "wait until she finished reading". Just an overall rude, non-hospitable hospitality experience. Then the room was, well, not so clean. Potato chip crumbs on the floor and a stained couch. Scratchy sheets with the wrong size mattress pad on the bed. We were running late for work so we didn't have time to switch rooms and frankly didn't want to deal with the front desk staff. We will never stay hear again. Lots of other options in Miami.
"Good Value - Nice balance between cost and amenities."
This is the second time we've chosen to stay at this property - I guess that would count as a recommendation. We needed a one-night stay between flying in, and embarking on a cruise the next day. The property is very convenient to both airport and Port of Miami, and mostly because it seemed right at the point between paying enough for a "good" hotel, and worrying about quality if we went less expensive. The rooms were neat and clean. They were cleaning the carpets on the day we checked in - I wish I would have read the notice before walking around stocking-foot, and getting wet feet. They have quite a few convenience items for sale in a little shop next to the desk, including beverages, cold and frozen food items. All the rooms have both fridge and microwave. Breakfast is served each morning, and I will say it's on par with most hotel "free" breakfasts. There is a smaller restaurant on the property that serves a few lunch and dinner items, and also has a serviceable bar. I wouldn't call it fine dining or a premier bar, but that's not why I chose the hotel. It's only about a 10 minute shuttle ride or a $5 uber ride to/from the Bayport Area with plenty of dining and drinking options. I read a lot of the other reviews before staying at this property, and quite frankly, I don't get a lot of the negative ones. If you are looking for a 5-star experience, then you've picked the wrong hotel. If you want a good value with quick and east access to airport, cruise port and hospital, it's a great place to stay. I would agree that it's not a neighborhood where I would go out walking at night, but there are no issues on the property itself. We will probably stay here again next time we sail out of Port of Miami. (Note: They contract with a shuttle service to bring guests to the port for $6.00 each. The service was fine, but it was pretty crazy getting everyone and their luggage on the right van. Next time, I'll probably take a cab or an Uber instead - won't be that much more money)
"Would rebook this hotel in a heartbeat."
We just returned from a cruise that left Miami. We booked the Springhill Suites East Medical Centre hotel because of all of the amenties. We received a great price in what is a very expensive city and that was important especially now with our Canadian dollar so low. The hotel brand I trust, having stayed at many of them elsewhere. The amenities such as an airport shuttle, free breakfast, free downtown shuttles and even a great price on a return airport shuttle after the cruise all made this hotel a super value. The rooms were very spacious compared to even some higher end downtown hotels. The location is very near to the downtown/Miami beach area. Taxis or Ubers were extremely cheap from this location. The area of the hotel ( Overtown ) is as we heard, a little "sketchy" but this never came into play. There is a great restaurant nearby ( Crust ) and a grocery store. I was advised to take taxis there by locals but really, it did not look that bad. The location was certainly not a reason to avoid the hotel. The assistant GM, Larry, was super friendly and helpful as were his staff. He helped our group to get an Uber even helping me put their link on my phone and reserving it for us. His recommendations for the day were perfect. We had an extremely fun day in Miami and it really got our holiday off to a great start. Thank you Larry! Upon looking back at our stay, we are so glad we chose this hotel. The airport hotels were too far out and in no better of a location. The downtown hotels, while having a premium location, were not close to being worth the money. The often used Holiday Inn has one side wall covered in graffiti. Do yourself a favour and stay here. You can buy your family dinner with the savings!
"Privacy doesn't matter to this hotel"
We were a group of eleven with five rooms booked at this hotel. My room had no other names on it. When I checked in they did not look at my ID even though I presented it. Deposited my things in my room and left for a little while. When I returned there were several other bags in my room. They had given a key to my room to someone who mentioned my name. When I went down to discuss it with them, again, they did not ask for my ID, just blurted out my name when I said I wanted to talk about room number such and such. The person that handed out the room key stated that when someone comes in and asks for someone's room, they generally give out the key to that room. Totally against the law. I asked for a manager, no one on duty. The next morning I asked for a manager. The only one on duty was the housekeeping manager and they would be in staff meetings all morning. Marriott Springhill Suites is an upscale hotel. I've stayed in others and been very satisfied but this staff, including the assistant manager, didn't seem to have a clue about privacy laws.
