"Tranquil oasis in the center of Hollywood"
The hotel feels like a very nice older apartment community in a compound. I know that might not sound nice -- but it is! Even though there is quite a bit that could be done to update the property, the fact that is old and a bit worn really isn't off-putting -- it kind of matches the older rock stars that have stayed there. The amenities are complete, the room (king jr. suite) that we had was nicely appointed. The restaurant has a great location in the garden-like inner area of the property, with great service and food. Cute Koi pond and quiet garden seating areas for privacy. The staff (valet, bellman, front desk, concierge) were all very polite and very helpful. Overall the effect is of a nice boutique -- not a chain-style place. The location is very convenient to all the sights, restaurants and clubs in the Hollywood area. We would happily stay at the Sunset Marquis again.
"Legend slight undermined by reality!"
The Sunset Marquis was always a hotel that we had wanted to stay at. Having been to the outdoor bar a number of times, we felt the atmosphere was really great and also mingling with rock stars added a certain something! It is a super hotel and particularly the restaurant area is very nice and relaxing; the standard of food is good and naturally the "american" service is exactly what you'd expect. A slight downside is that the hotel rooms don't quite live up to the "legend" of the place. The rooms are OK..not brilliant. The main downside of this icon location is that the pool area was quite shabby and in need of some extensive refurbishment. Having said that, we lounged by the pool a couple of days and it was fine. Sunset Marquis in just off Sunset so you are in a good central location. Would we stay again' Well, if they refurb has taken place and we were sure the standards had been raised, then a definite "yes"...but without that, there are plenty of alternative places to eat, drink and mingle with celebs....if that's your thing!
The wonderful thing about living in a city that is a tourist destination is that you can take advantage of all it has to offer -- like the gem of a hotel that is the Sunset Marquis. With two pools, tranquil lush grounds, an on-site spa, a great bar and a top notch restaurant with helpful and friendly staff to boot, if you live in LA there's no need to get on a plane and travel for a vacation - it's all here! I spent an amazing 24 hours taking advantage of every amenity the hotel had to offer - believe the hype. The renovated rooms are quite large, well appointed and shady and a welcome respite if you've spent a hot day lounging by one of the pools. We opted for a junior suite with a king bed, which also was positioned right by the pool and had a large outdoor seating area that felt like it was our own private cabana. The villas are amazing for a hideaway, but for this "trip" we wanted to be closer to the pool. Food is delicious and the restaurant and bars offer a great selection of wines and craft cocktails. Additionally, if you are inclined the hotel allows access to Equinox gym which is a short walk down Sunset. Hotel staff is more than willing to attempt to accommodate requests - from early check in to a room or menu change - just ask. Will definitely be coming back again this summer for more of the same. Thanks Marquis!
This is by far my favorite property in Los Angeles with central location, chic & modern decor and most importantly great guest services. I arrived early and was greeted by Hayden at the front desk. Though I was early and check-in time is 3pm; she took it upon herself to coordinate a room inspection to get me into the room quickly so I can begin to unwind and enjoy the property. Pleasant surprise upon arrival with complementary cocktail. The property is close to all the action in the city but far away from all the city noise as the property's unique design makes it a very tranquil and allows you to relax.
"good location, drab main building"
We stayed 3 nights on one of our frequent travels to LA. First time at this hotel. Location is nice, on a quiet street right by Sunset Blvd. Our room was nicely sized and bed very comfortable however the decor, with low ceilings and hallways that were dark was depressing looking and feeling. As if we were in another decade or on a movie set in another decade. A bit disappointing as our daily rate was over $500/night. We had hoped we would get upgraded in one of the villas in the back of the grounds as they looked lovely however that was not an option given to us by the front desk. The valet guys were terrific, front desk pleasant enough but appear to be staffed by out of towners. We did not get good answers for our questions on dining out etc, it seemed that the employees did not know the area well. A decent nights sleep but value for our money wasn't there, we would not stay again.
