"East coast visitors"
The property was beautiful but it was the service that made the experience. We travel a fair amount and the staff at Terranea was the best we have encountered . Lots of families who are obvioulsy well off as if forced to find a complaint all I can say is that the food and beverage prices are high for what you get.
great. Try to get more gluten free desserts on the menu like chocolate mouse, flourless cakes, or rice flour cakes, etc. The staff said the gelatos had gluten all except the fruit sorbet. Would be nice to have a more decadent option ;)
Food was overpriced, service was poor, pool was dirty :( My family had dinner at Nelson's our first night there and it took over 10 minutes to get seated (and we had reservations) while people who came after us who had NO reservations were seated immediately! (Huh''!) Once seated, our waitress brought us water and did not return to take our order until I finally flagged her down 20 minutes later! They brought the WRONG food (someone else's order) to our table not once, but TWICE!! From the time we were seated to the time our food finally arrived, 45 minutes had passed! Our food was cold, my daughter's salad had no dressing (not even on the side),and my Cioppino had ONE shrimp, a couple of scallops, and a tiny piece of salmon on the side. Our water glasses were never refilled, and our waitress was MIA during most of our meal :( I couldn't stand it anymore so I just asked for the check when I finally saw her and we left very disappointed and unimpressed. The food was mediocre at best and the service (or lack there of) was horrible! The valet wasn't any different. I called for my car ahead of time TWICE to avoid the wait...but to no avail. I still had to wait 20+ minutes both times!! The first time, the valet said they never received a call from the front desk letting them know that I asked for my car. The second time, the valet told me my car was "on it's way" when actually they couldn't find my keys and when they finally found it, tried to hide the fact that they JUST found it!! In the meantime, I'm waiting for close to 25 minutes with no explanations or apologies for their incompetence. This is a 5-star resort that charged $38/night for valet parking. Really'' I would've rather self-parked the car (which they also charge $38/night for as well) had I known :/ It would've saved me the aggravation! Lastly, the main pool was not what I'd expected from a resort like this. There were plastic cups, straws, bandaids, and other debris floating in the murky water. I understand its a "family" pool but doesn't that mean it should be cleaned more frequently BECAUSE it IS a family pool' My overall experience was clearly very disappointing, to say the least, and I will not return or recommend this resort. For the price I paid to stay there, I expected better!!
"Best resort to get away"
Relax and indulge at a resort that has all the features one needs to get away and enjoy life. I highly recommend this experience. The service was extremely friendly and attentive. Nelson's has a great view and the food did not disappoint.
"Great Family Stay"
Our family of four (kids 15 and 12) had a very nice weekend stay at Terranea. We had an ocean view room on the 7th floor of the main hotel building. Our view was very nice - overlooking the main pool, with a nice view of the ocean. The room was large and very comfortable for four people. We really liked the hotel. The service was good throughout. We made ample use of the pool - the lifeguard staff was nice. Our youngest enjoyed the slide, which is a good extra to keep kids entertained. We had two really good meals at Catalina - a nice varied menu with some gluten free options. We also had a good dinner overlooking the ocean at Nelsons - although the food seemed better at Catalina. There is also an onsite coffee shop/snack/ice cream/wine shop that was quite good. A nice perk is the free shuttle service into town to Starbucks or grocery store. An added bonus was seeing several whales swimming throughout the weekend out in the ocean! We also took a trip into Long Beach (about half hour drive) and did a whale watching tour - and the tour boat ended up heading right off shore of Terranea. We were told by a few staff people that the time of our visit (April) was a great time to visit. The resort was not crowded at all - no reservations needed at the restaurants - plenty of open chairs by the pool. Overall, a beautiful resort, nice rooms - very comfortable and relaxing. As one tip, we enjoyed staying right in the main building, so close to pool, lobby bar, Catalina, etc. it seems the grounds are quite spread out -so it may have a different, quieter feel if you stay in a casita room.
