"Unforgettable Engagement Surprise"
The Carlyle is my now fiancee's favorite hotel in the city and it's easy to understand why. Everything during our stay was beyond expectation. I planned the engagement surprise with Patrick in hospitality, who was a pleasure to work with. He went above and beyond for me by upgrading us to one of the best rooms in the hotel. We were overlooking central park on one side and midtown manhattan on the other. He decorated our room with framed pictures of us, pillowcases with our names embroidered into them, exquisite flower arrangements, champagne, rose petals...the whole nine yards. My girlfriend and I had drinks at Bemelmans bar, which just oozes old NYC class. When I surprised her with the hotel room, she was beside herself, crying and laughing with excitement at seeing the room, the view, and realizing that this was our moment. I couldn't imagine a better engagement. A memory we will share for a lifetime. I've had the pleasure of staying at many 5 star hotels in my life, but the Carlyle is up there with the very best. The service, the hospitality, the accommodations...all beyond description. It's safe to say we will be coming back.
One of New York's great old hotels, the Carlyle is well-positioned for the upper East side, museums, etc. It still offers luxury with a comfortable hominess but it feels a bit dated. This is partly style and partly amenities. Expect to queue at lifts but friendly attendants when you finally get one.
"Cafe Carlisle - "Chaotic and Demeaning""
I had phoned from London 3 weeks before our stay in New York to reserve a table at the Cafe Carlisle for their jazz evening on Mondays with Woody Allen and the Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band. I was told there were no tables but I was top of the waiting list should one come up. I called again twice but told no tables available but to queue on the evening from around 6pm for bar tickets. What I wasn't told was there are only 9 bar seats and after that you are told to wait two and a half hours in the chance of standing room. The entire process is badly handled, people start queuing from around 4.30pm and the queue is in a busy part of the hotel in front of glass exit doors and another bar which causes some congestion. Even those with dinner reservations were confused as to which queue to join and had to squeeze past those waiting. Inside the tiny and airless Cafe Carlisle people were literally crammed into seats like sardines and given it is an expensive evening this is totally unacceptable. Simple communication about number of seats and realistic waiting times wold have saved us a frustrating evening - never again! Visited October 2016
"Because Class Never Goes out of Style"
I recently went to New York for work and decided to go back to a Hotel that I haven't been to in years - The Carlyle. It reminds me of timeless elegance. With so many changes, sometimes its great to stay the same. From the time of check in to check out (it was just one night), the staff is professional, friendly and respectful. The bar is too beautiful for words - they seem to attract an older customer (and I'll define older as over 35 :-) My room was on the small side and the configuration was a little strange - but the bedding is top of the line and my time there was short. This hotel may not be 'hip' - I'm showing my age, I know - but I'll take timeless elegance any day.
During my six days I waited a combined total of 2 hours for the elevator. They only have 2 working to cover 34 floors. Several times I had to call three times and then found out there was no one operating the elevator at all''' Do NOT book here unless all elevators are working. This was beyond frustrating. Then, on my last night,I left my credit card in the restaurant. I was a guest of their hotel, but no effort was taken to contact me - even though my name was on the card. This was a very disappointing stay at a hotel I grew up going to. So sad!!!!
