I convinced my brother and his family to stay at the Drake during a recent mini family reunion. I had fond memories of staying her 10+ years ago on a trip to Chicago. What a disappointment! With the first hour of my arrival I was ready to pack it up and move down the street to the Four Seasons! Upon arrival I was checked in by a nice lady. My mother, who was checking in with the lady beside me, was done quite quickly and was given bottles of water to take to her room with her. I was not offered this but thought little of it. When we arrived at our room, I quickly realized that it was the wrong room. We requested a suite and were given a standard room. When I called down to the front desk they first told me there was nothing they could do. After further digging, it was determined that they somehow had to rooms assigned to my name and the other room was in fact ready. Upon meeting the bell boy at our correct room, we exchanged keys and we entered the room. It was now correct and the fruit plate we ordered was waiting for us, as expected. For $25.95 we received a few pieces of pineapple and melon, 8 blueberries and 1 strawberry cut in half. I was again disappointed. When my wife entered the bathroom, she noticed that it was not yet serviced by the maid. The trash was full, the toilet was unflushed (YUCK) and there were dirty towels on the floor. I called downstairs and asked to have our room properly serviced. Upon returning the room, it was in faced refreshed and we unpacked and got ready to go to bed. We realized that the pullout sofa that we requested for our 11 year old son was not in fact a pull out. So we called down to ask what happened. They said they had no notes in the system about this (although we have an email from them stating the room would have a pullout sofa or a roll-away). The front desk man rudely said to my wife that it was $33 a night for a roll-a-way. She explained we were under the impression it was included in the room. After some back and forth he said he would do us a favor and throw it in. What a guy, eh' I had enough at this point and went downstairs to have a conversation with the manager (who I believe was the same guy on the phone). I explained my displeasure to him and he seemed uncaring. He never offered what I though was a sincere apology. While the rest of the weekend went off without incident, i would offer that NEVER AGAIN will I stay at the Drake with so many other better choices in the area.
This is a beautiful hotel in a great location, right off of Michigan Ave. Watertower, John Hancock Building, and all the nice shops are right there. I had a view of the lake. Room was very spacious, especially for a big city. The coffee kiosk was very efficient and had good coffee. Overall a very nice stay and I would go back. I'm lucky enough that this is my companies preferred hotel in Chicago, but I would stay for pleasure.
"A classic in the Windy City!"
We enjoyed our 4 night stay at the Drake Hotel. Although I am no longer living in Chicago, The Drake was always the place to have an event at, or escape for a special getaway. It still reflects much of the classic image. We had a room facing the Lake and Lake Shore Drive, which was wonderful. The room was well appointed and comfortable. The staff is friendly and helpful and arranged for an early check in when arrived. I would rather stay at an older hotel that still maintains its character than a sleek and modern hotel. The location is wonderful; just at the tip of north Michigan Avenue. There are plenty of restaurants nearby as well as shopping adventures. The bus stop is right there and you can walk across the street to get to the beach. All in all, a great place!
"Choose another 3 star hotel"
The Drake used to be an amazing place. Now it's just another hotel on the magnificent mile. There are so many other nice hotels that actually care about their rooms and their customers, so skip this one
"Great stay at the Drake"
Beautiful view, super quiet rooms and perfect service. The executive level private breakfast room wasn't available due to construction so we were given vouchers for a full breakfast in the restaurant. My guess is that we received more choices than we would have if the breakfast room had been available. This was a wonderful experience.
