"Tag along on a business trip"
I tagged along on my husband's business trip in October 2016. We parked across the street in the designated garage and had parking validated. You take an elevator up to the lobby. Checkin was efficient. I would say the staff was professional and understated and not exceptionally friendly. There was a nice lounge area that we walked through to get to our separate bank of elevators to get to our room. Our room was located by the elevators, so unfortunately we did get some noise from that. It was well-decorated and clean, but as a luxury hotel, it didn't really blow me away. The location was great for sightseeing as it is very close to Michigan Avenue.
"Simply Fabulous "
This is an awesome hotel. Close to everything. The hotel had a extensive remodel to the lobby/bar area as well as the guest rooms. No expense was spared. Everything was appointed nicely and is top notch. The TV in my room was HUGE!! I used SpotHero to park across the street for $32 for about 20 hours. Fantastic staff and service! The Gwen truly is a luxury hotel. I will definitely be back to this beauty.
"Newly refurbished. Stunning."
So glad I chose the Gwen for our Chicago long weekend away. One of the best hotel experiences I have had due to it's newly refurbished rooms which are stunning. The rooms are beautifully decorated. The bed so comfy. The bathroom was huge with separate shower and bath, and a separate toilet too. Everything bright, modern and spotless. Molten Brown toiletries too. We had no noise issues on the 12th floor, from the street or neighbouring rooms. And no problems with the temperature control. I absolutely loved it. It is in a great location. Easy to get to from O'Hare airport with only one easy change required on the L train. One side is directly on the Magnificent Mile for all the shops. Around 20 min walk to the Pier. Less than 10 minutes to the start of the Big Bus Tour. Less than 15 minute walk to Chicago 360 observation deck (and a Cheesecake Factory). We never used the restaurant in the hotel as there are many options within a 10 minute walk and we wanted to try out specific places (Giordanos, Shake Shack, Portillos, The Purple Pig), but my partner appreciated the complimentary coffee found on the bar every morning. And the complimentary bottle of water in the room every day. We did try happy hour in the bar a couple of times for a beer and a cocktail. My partner did say he waited a while at a quiet bar, but it is a nice place to sit. The outdoor area wasn't yet open when we were there but I imagine that is a lovely little space. We had minimal interaction with staff (just didn't need much during our stay) but on check in and check out they were extremely pleasant, and I felt they were always around and very happy to help if I needed them. The doormen/valets always gave a friendly greeting which is nice. If you like modern, beautiful, clean and comfortable in a great location then The Gwen is for you. If I go to Chicago again that is where I will stay. RESTAURANT TIPS: Giordanos deep dish pizza is worth the hype, and the wait. There is one less than 10 minutes from the hotel. The Purple Pig within minutes of the hotel is an amazing restaurant for pork lovers. I want to go back! Portillos Hot Dogs is an experience. Great for cheap hot dogs but check out the pastas, salads and the concrete too.
"ALWAYS THE BEST CHOICE "
Have gone for 10 years, after trying other similar hotels in the area the Gwen is the best value. Perfectly located, great staff. Restaurant is fine for breakfast and terrace good for a cocktail. Has changed ownership several times, but not the staff.
"All the benefits of being on Michigan Avenue but none of the chaos."
A great lobby with a great lobby bar. Room was bigger than most downtown. Very good service in the lobby (bar, check-in, etc.) The one knock on the service - we left our bags with the bell captain when we checked out and when we came back to get our bags it took almost 20 minutes to get our bags. I'll concede that they were extremely busy - but two of the bellmen went on break while a bunch of us were waiting for our bags. And then when I got my bag it had been rifled through. The bellman who brought me the bag acknowledged and apologized - apparently something was leaking from a bag in the vicinity - and nothing was missing. The hotel is attached to the Shops at North Bridge which is extremely convenient - but they do close the walkway after the mall closes so at night you need to walk a block or so to get to Michigan Ave. We were there over New Year's so it was pretty cold - but manageable. PS This was a different hotel before, the Conrad, I think.
