Last minute booking through Hotwire and I was not disappointed. Door men were very helpful. One agent working check in, but went fast. In arriving to our room, was one of the most modern rooms I've ever stayed in. Extremely clean. Giant 60"+ TV. Bed was probably the most comfortable bedding and mattress I've ever slept on. Bathroom amenities were excellent and top of the line. Would highly recommend.
"Stylish and comfortable hotel"
We spent a weekend at the Gwen and had a good stay. The room was large, comfortable and quiet. The hotel interiors were beautifully designed in a contemporary style; while service was quick and flawless. However, the main entrance to the hotel is located under the drive passage and the hotel itself is a part of a big shopping center on Michigan Avenue, which I found a bit strange. For some reason, none of our toiletries were replaced or added after we used them, so we had to call the front desk every time we ran out of something, which wasn't convenient. Otherwise, a good quick stay in the heart of North River neighborhood.
"No one answers the phone!"
The rooms are modern, well sized and have giant flat screen TVs. Bathrooms & amenities are nice (although I don't like the large locker room style gel and shampoo in the shower). Housekeeping was good. The bar and patio seem like a nice place to have a drink. The staff to the extent we interacted with them was pleasant. Location is good for tourism in heart of mag mile / river north. What really fails at this hotel is the service - in particular that no one answers the phone! We called the operator / front desk maybe 6-7 times during our long weekend stay for minor things, and actually got someone on the phone 2 times. The other times we waited on hold for about 5 minutes to "all our representatives are currently busy, but your call is important to us" before giving up. Once I could understand, but this was a recurring problem throughout the weekend. A luxury hotel charging almost $400 / night should never remind you of trying to call your cable company, period.
"Luxurious room, great location"
First, the location of the Gwen is excellent. Located right off of Michigan avenue within a 5 min walk to the Chicago river, 10 min walk to the Navy Pier, and a short uber to most other main attractions. It's also attached to Nordstrom and located in the middle of all the shopping on Michigan Ave. The hotel is not as tall as some of the other hotels in town, but it's rooms offer great view of Michigan ave and Chicago. There is an excellent lobby bar and outside deck, with a DJ spinning some beats on the nights I was there (the weekend). Front desk staff was welcoming and helpful, expected nothing less from a Luxury Collection Hotel. Also, drink and food prices also are up to the standards (I.E. expensive). The rooms are very well apportioned, with luxurious Molton Brown bath products, comfortable beds, and contemporary furniture. TV's are some of the biggest I've seen in a hotel (65") so watching TV in bed is supremely comfortable. K-Cups were the coffee of choice, which is a step up than the standard coffee brewers (but not as great as the nespresso at the Ritz-Carlton Chicago). The light switch for the restroom did take a call to figure out how to work (3 way switch) and the scale didn't seem to work, but other than that, everything was perfect. Will definitely be willing to come back, but only if I can afford the premium price.
"Great hotel, staff, location, and clean"
Stayed 5 nights and nearly everything was perfect. The hotel is nice and modern. Public spaces and the room were very clean. Staff are polite and attentive. Ate breakfast each morning at the hotel restaurant and food prices are very reasonable ($8-$19). We had lots of different things including the yogurt parfait, bread pudding French toast, waffle, chilaquiles, eggs Benedict with crab, etc. All except were excellent except the waffle was just average. The only minor hiccup was at check in there was only one employee who was having a long discussion with another guest. The concierge located close by noticed I had been waiting a few minutes a d came over to check me in. She was very professional and polite (Kyla I think was her name). Alec was also great and helped secure the desired room type. The room was reasonably spacious and the bathroom was large. Not much of a view but fine with me. The shower has bottles mounted in the wall for shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. My body wash bottle didn't dispense anything since the pump was broken so I had to remove the nozzle to get the soap out. The room was also relatively quiet. Not much traffic in the hall and no noise from the outdoors. The location is fantastic for tourist attractions, magnificent mile, restaurants, and bars. One annoying aspect of the hotel is that the reception is on the 15th floor and you need to change elevators to get to your room. Overall a great place to stay and would definitely come bank. Hotel has happy hour each day from 4-6pm with $6 beer and $9 cocktails which is a significant discount. The
