"Good location, looking tired"
My girlfriend and I stayed at the hotel towards the End of March, Our first impressions of the Hotel were extremely positive from the breath taking views as you arrive and travel down the 20 odd stairs to reception. We were then greeting at reception with a welcome drink a nice touch after a long commute, however the welcome drink was to neither of our tastes or to the taste of the couple who had checked in before us. We where then lead to our room which was the Deluxe apartment with private pool. If you struggle with stairs ascending or climbing then this is not the hotel for you, the restaurant and rooms are a minimum of approximately 60 steep steps before the road level at the front of the Hotel. When being shown the room the concierge struggled to turn the air conditioning on, after a long 20 minutes of pointing the remote at different locations in the room, changing the batteries and scratching his head, he soon come to the conclusion that the AC was indeed switch off on the unit itself. The room was looking quite sorry for itself as was the pool area and exterior of the room. We purchased the hotel on a 'Super Shock Deal' and the room was supposedly £2000 for a week and we got it for £700 ish, bargain we thought it will be super swanky hotel if people normally pay so much more. In hindsight if things normally seem too good to be true then they often are. See photos to understand what I mean, the outdoor shower tray was covered in bird poo and decomposing leaves, the path to the shower was all overgrown and there was a pool of what can only be described as stagnant water. The taps mounts on the indoor shower/bath where cracked as was the enamel on the bath and the seal on the glass pain between the shower and the bedroom leaked each time the shower was used. Also no door on the toilet which we both found odd. The hotel is just looking a little tired needs some maintenance and a lick of paint. The hotel is well situated, guests need transport though, as the hotel is not within walking distance of anything much. Reception sorted us a scooter which was 350 BHT a day + £8.00
"Great location, dirty and worn hotel"
The pros: Stunning location, interesting architecture The Cons: The hotel is worn, not super clean, the towels are literally frayed and thread-bare. - Not all rooms have an ocean view. Our first room had a balcony over-looking the restaurant, which was not at all private and was loud. A lot of the other ones seemed to have no privacy. -The worst part of our experience was the staff. Some were fabulous, like the shuttle driver. We were constantly hounded to pay our balance the entire time we were there (they have some weird policy that you have to pay upfront; probably because people try to leave early. We tried.) When we asked to use the kayaks the guy rolled his eyes at me and grudgingly got them. When we turned in the snorkel gear, the lady yelled at us to put our towels away. It was one thing after another. I think probably because the management is horrible so it is not a happy place to work. -They do some kind of nightly turn down service where they come and turn on every light in the room but that's it. We thought someone had broken into our room! -The restaurant food is super average at best, and the staff not very friendly. -Everything is just a bit dirty and needs some TLC, and they just don't go the extra mile to ensure the guests are happy. I actually don't think they really care if the guests are happy! They just want the money and then they are done. So for the prices they charge, it is not worth it. With some work on customer service and some small upgrades, this place could be amazing. But as it is now, I do not recommend. I wish we had stayed somewhere else.
"Great location, great hotel"
We stayed at The Kala recently for 10 days as we were getting married in Koh Samui. The hotel is beautifully designed, built into the rock face of the cliff side. The pool area and sun loungers is lovely with a great view of the ocean and island. There are two good beaches a 5 minute walk either side of the hotel too. The food is good too, particularly the Thai dishes. The Western dishes can be hit and miss. Prices are reasonable and the hotel can offer taxi services themselves around the hotel, saving on having to flag them down. It is well located in between Lamai and Chaweng, about a ten minute drive to both. There are nice restaurants within a 10-15 minute walk too. We stayed in a Duplex Pool Villa which was great, a really good size with balcony and bathtub facing the view. The staff were all very accommodating and you are able to order breakfast until 6pm! We will definitely return.
We like it alot.Really very nice hotel.quite and nice views.middle of both beach its feel like you are middle of koh samui. Whit scooter max 10 minnto everywhere u want to go.And very sweet and kind stuff. We really enjoy it.
"Stunning hotel but need a new chef "
We stayed for 1 night at the kala. We had an amazing room, very clean (few ants around the bath and friendly geckos made an apperance) We had our own private pool but because it had a roof and was freezing cold we couldn't go in it. The views are incredible and the reception staff were friendly with good English. The reason I have only given this hotel a 3* is because we got this on a deal at a fraction of the usual price and if I had paid the usual rate I would not have been happy with the insects in the room, the cold pool, breakfast. The restaurant was pretty awful!! The staff could not speak English. I order the mixed grill. And while the waiter was walking away. I told him. That I would like it to be rare. Both our meals we waited a hour for and it was extremely over done! The actually table moved while I was trying to cut my steak. Chicken was dry as well any my companies lamb For the cost of this meal, In koh Samui we could have eaten anywhere and next time if we decide to go back for the views. We will eat out. For the price, we expected better. Breakfast we laughable. Not only where there a fly problem. (Expected outside in the heat) The poached eggs were hard Boiled and the bacon... was basically just a bit of fat. It's so disappointing as the hotel we amazing and the views are stunning to have such a letdown at the restaurant.. big problems !! Lovely hotel avoid restaurant!
