"Peaceful retreat with great view"
I chose the Kala samui from a recommendation from somebody who knows Thailande very well. first off the booking was made via the hotel directly and they were very quick to respond and we agreed on the room I wanted. payment was processed securely online and when reception by the hotel was perfect. A personal SUV from the Kala was dispatched for the pick up at the airport and we had a very nice ride with romantic songs to the resort. We really felt like Vips, which was not a bad thing you can assume ! ;D Anyways, we arrived all dreamy and with high expectations. check in was quick and we had a tour of the hotel. One thing shocked me : NO MOSQUITO! we spent two weeks there and I can count on one hand the number of flies I've seen. Needless to say, very very impressive for Thailande and believe me I go there every year... The Kala is a very nice small (count 20 rooms tops) hotel on the rocky side of Koh samui. Think quirky with a touch of luxury and quietness. breakfast is a la carte and not a buffet. it is not too bad. Honestly, food is alright, not amazing but alright. Swiming pool is not very big but has a very nice view on the ocean. The room was a deluxe. nice and comfortable. not huge but enough. the bathroom had a nice bathtub with a possibility to open wooden windows to have the nice view of the ocean whilst having a smooth bath. Apart from a few of them, who had an advanced English level, most of the staff can just barely hold a basic conversation. We enjoyed very much our stay and would definitely recommend and go back there. Thank you Kala
"Awesome Villa stay, totally let down by the food"
Only rated 3 stars due to the food. If just based on our stay in the room - it's an easy 5 stars. We stayed in the presidential villa as a treat for the end of our holiday in Thailand. The room was fantastic with an amazing view and a superb, small, private infinity pool. The bed and pillows offered a superb night's rest. The shower and room facilities/décor etc were all super. Again - this is just based on the presidential villa suite. I didn't see other rooms there. The restaurant though is an over priced disaster zone! Offering small portions and substandard quality. My friend tried a burger for lunch which got served with the plastic cellophane around the burger!!! How on earth can you cook a burger with cellophane on and not notice ''' We still got charged for this meal and got offered 3 small pieces of fruit by way of apology. As per other reviews, the breakfast is rubbish. The meals at night were also below par for the rest of Koh Samui and twice the price. The staff were friendly and could all mostly understand English well. There were no communication issues as per other reviews. The WiFi also worked very well in the room. So I can only presume previous issues were sorted since. I can't say that I would stay here again, although I would stay in that presidential villa again as it was 'that good'. It's a shame there's nowhere else in walk-able distance outside the hotel for alternative food choices etc (Obviously not an issue if you have your own transport or don't mind the over priced taxi's)
"Great start to an amazing honeymoon!"
We chose The Kala for the first three days of our honeymoon to relax and unwind before exploring the island. We booked through the hotel website and got the luxury package which offers breakfast, lunch and dinner and daily spa included in the price. And it was totally worth it! From day one the staff were always extremely friendly and helpful, especially reception and restaurant staff. The view from our room was amazing, overlooking the whole bay. There is a small secluded beach 5 minute walk away which is nice and quiet, no vendors trying to sell you things (like in Chaweng beach). Good snorkelling and swimming too. The restaurant offers authentic Thai food which is really good and the bar has a wide variety of cocktails. Overall nice quiet relaxing place, great for if you just want to unwind and slow down. Definitely looking forward to going back!
"resort with great sea views"
After booking confirmation, I sent several emails to the hotel to arrange for airport transfer but there was no reply from them. Hence I called Expedia for help. Expedia called the hotel directly to relay my request. Hotel staff at the Front Desk said that they could not access the emails sent to Reservations & provided another email add. While still on the line with Expedia, who is also on the other line with the Front Desk, I immediately email my flight details to the Front Desk which Expedia confirmed immediately with the Front Desk which in turn confirmed receipt of my email & said will reply my email. However I did not receive it. So I crossed my fingers & departed for Koh Samui. Thank goodness, the hotel transport was there @ the airport when I arrived. I stayed in Duplex Villa 103 which has a great sea view from the balcony (2nd floor) but only a partial sea view (block by the trees) from the private pool on the 1st floor. The Villa next to mine (assumingly Villa 104) has unblock sea view. Prepare to climb steps. There are no lifts. Villa free wifi not stable. Hotel only provides 1-way shuttle to town. U have to take a metered cab back to the hotel. However, I waited in vain at the taxi stand. I had to use the NaviGo app (saw the advert in the island guide map, it is similar to Uber) to call for a cab. During my stay, there were 2 blackouts in 1 nite between 2300 - 0000 hrs. Each lasting for a few min. found out from the hotel staff that it is common on the island.
"Amazing views, but the hotel is tired and needs a revamp!"
The rooms are beautiful architecturally, yet need a general facelift. The curtains are threadbare and the towels in the rooms and at the swimming pool are not of a good standard. The breakfast is very mediocre and corners have been cut in terms of quality. The other meals were of a good standard and tasty, yet pricey.
