"Guest for dinner at a firm's Christmas party"
There were about twenty in the party at the Melba restaurant in the Langham Hotel. The hotel presents as luxurious. There is underground parking nearby. The firm had booked for its guests to partake of a smorgasbord. What was available was varied, copious, tasty and appropriate, The entrée I chose was two varieties of smoked salmon, proscuito, mushrooms, and cheese. After such a gluttonous start, I had to moderate: Roast ham,and roast vegetables were consumed in smaller serves, but there were no limitations imposed by the restaurant.. The choice of deserts was extensive too. I have no idea of what it cost my host: I suspect $100 a head, But it was appreciated by the guests. the outlook from the dining room across the river to the city centre showed off Melbourne to advantage.
"Be treated like a princess!"
I have stayed at The Langham before, but my recent 9 night stay was exceptional. Have arrived in Melbourne from Hobart - 6 hours door to door! - I decided to check my booking confirmation on the Skybus only to find I had the wrong day - I was a day early! The staff were so sweet and consoled me in my embarrassment. Not only did they book me in without a fuss but upgraded me to a delightful Deluxe River View room. Ten minutes later, an ice bucket with a bottle of champagne arrived - compliments of the house. The service never waivered: I was addressed by my name at breakfast every morning, waiters remembered what I liked to drink ("I think it's Chandon Brut for you madam'"or "A double Pinot Gris with ice'"), the doorman greeted me enthusiastically every day ("Hello Birthday Girl!"), the staff member who made up my room every morning left a little note with her name and greeted me by name in the hallway.......I could go on. Continental breakfast in the Melba Restaurant was fresh and delightful - a variety of fresh fruit, yoghurt and crepes or waffles as well as the usual cheeses etc for those inclined. A pot of hot, fresh coffee was no trouble. The buffet dinner there was superb. This hotel has a better selection of toiletries than any other I've stayed in, and the slippers actually fit. As I was leaving, they were setting up their Christmas decorations and lights and I really did feel like a princess! If I had any complaints it would be that I wished the door staff could have been more specific on the best way to walk to the Arts Centre - I found the easiest way on my last day. Also the Concierge's suggestion to take the Starbus instead of the Skybus was not helpful. i discovered too late that Skybus is the better option.
Our in-laws generously gave us a gift voucher for The Langham. We stayed 1 night & ate at Melba's - memorable buffet & nice to see good local produce. All the staff were great & our room upgrade much appreciated. Highly recommend this well located hotel.
"Just out of the main CBD in a lively area with excellent views!"
I stayed here about 15 years ago when it was the Sheraton Towers. Now the place is still in good nick, so they must be good at upkeep but it doesn't look much different. This is definitely a beautiful hotel, but very nana meets country manor in its décor. I feel my parents in their 70s would love it here. It's location will depend on what you're after. Southbank is bustling with great bars and restaurants and we liked it's proximity to the State Theatre and South Melbourne Markets. There's a free CBD tram on St Kilda Road too. Our room had awesome city and river view rooms which were awesome.
wonderful facilities and staff - highly recommended. Every staff member I came across were very welcoming and friendly. The room I had was with a view of the river and it was absolutely brilliant at night with the city lights. The bed is so comfortable I didn't want to leave!! Will be going back again very soon.
