"Small and dated"
I stayed at the Mansfield for 3 nights in October 2016. The hotel was relatively convenient and easy to find and is located just off 5th Ave (a main street with lots of shops). There is construction at the time I stayed but that didn't bother me much. The room was not available until 3pm but they were able to store my luggage until I returned later in the day. The room was extremely small. I appreciate that this is NYC and rooms tend to run smaller than other cities, but this was cramped even for a small young female solo traveller. The room was dated and the bed was so soft it gave me back pains the next morning. The bathroom was also very small and cramped. Because of the size of the room, the whole room became quite humid once you take a shower and causes the room to smell. Eventually I realised that you have to open the bathroom window 24/7 and turn on the A/C on full blast 24/7 to reduce (but not eliminate) the smell. There is also a closet in the room but it didn't look particularly clean. Service was average. One thing that did bother me was that the hotel staff did not give me the option of taking my luggage to my room and insisted on delivering it to my room so they could receive some tips. Some staff also were not particularly friendly, although I also met a few younger staff who were friendly and helpful. There is also a Club Room which has self-serve coffee / tea. There were always people sitting in the Club Room presumably because of how small and uncomfortable the rooms were. There is also a gymnasium open 24/7 but I did not take advantage of this during my stay. On the whole, I'm not sure if I would call this a 4-star hotel. I will not return to this hotel and will pay a little more to stay at a better hotel next time.
The hotel is very nice, good area, the Times Square 3 minute! The room is clean, but there was many many small! We reserved on booking, the photo not normal! So we have very good help for Jimmy, and he change bigger room, for extra price. "Great location, helpful staff, pricey drinks, a little cramped."
Although our room was a little cramped it was clean and had a really comfy bed. Anything we needed was soon attended to by the hotel staff, who we found to be very helpful. Although there weren't any drink making facilities in the rooms, the library downstairs had facilities for drinks (tea and coffee), which were free to guests. Fresh cookies at reception from 5pm to 7pm was a nice touch. The bar, however, was pricey. The staff were very helpful in booking up events for us. There is currently scaffolding up outside the hotel but then that can be said for the rest of New York too. It didn't detract from our stay at this well located small hotel.
Only thing this hotel has going for it is the location. Between 5th and 6th on 44th . Close to restaurants and the theater distric. The staff is pleasant and helpful. Rooms are a bit quirky. Small bathroom and sink in room not in the bathroom. Heater not working. Turned off chilly at night. Over priced drinks in bar. Free coffee in library. ( machine ). Sorry guys, but no cigar.
"Needs some TLC"
The hotel must have been charming at one point in time. Now it feels like it's being a bit neglected. The mainfloor bar and reading room is nice. The elevators are old along with the rooms. That's not a bad thing but it feels a bit dirty. Elevator floors are greasy and stained, their charm is long gone. The rooms have decent furnishings but the bedding was on an old, squeaky subframe. The cushion under the window was deeply stained. The air conditioner had a few years of layered dust in the vents and the phone didn't work (not that we cared). The bath towel started to rip apart as I was drying off. You will hear everything going on outside. The windows are old and thin and the A/C unit is really just a sound conductor. Might mask the noise when it's on but we didn't need it. There's nothing special about this hotel other than the staff. They were very friendly and always willing to help.
