"Mount Nelson Elegance at Tea Time"
If your busy Cape Town sightseeing schedule won’t allow the couple of leisure hours that high tea (tea and a superabundance of finger sandwiches, cakes, petits-fours, fresh fruits and other small delights) at the Mount Nelson Hotel deserves (or if you just want to avoid the caloric intake it involves), here’s an alternative: take a taxi (cheap in Cape Town, R50 flat rate almost anywhere in the central district) to the imposing white colonnaded entry to the hotel (the City Sightseeing hop-on Yellow Line bus also has a stop across the street from the entry). Mount Nelson is one of the grande dame hotels of Cape Town, if not the grande dame hotel of Cape Town. Stroll up the majestic palm tree-lined entry drive, turn right on the gravel path in front of the main building, and enter the reception area, being prepared to sense immediately the aura of calm and comfort all around. Take a few moments to admire the historic artifacts on the walls of the sitting areas and the library, as well as the seemingly mile-long table of high tea tidbits, and then ask the hostess in the high tea area for a table for tea only -- not the full high tea -- inside, or, better, when the weather permits, on the shaded veranda. Order up the house blend of tea, and, we (two seniors) suggest, order as well the malva pudding, a South African specialty, a sort of spongy upside down cupcake served with a crème or other sauce, for which many recipes exist, but on which all agree apricot jam is an essential ingredient. After finishing, stroll back contentedly down the drive and flag a taxi to your next destination. The whole operation can be accomplished in an hour, but you will leave with some understanding of why Mount Nelson Hotel has attracted South African and international elites for more than a century.
It's got it's own smell - all pink - surrounded by a private park, in downtown. Awesome place! You only miss flamingos. Pool pool pool fancy breakfast. Sun set. Table mountain outside your window. Sun sets...
This hotel is great for business trip and business events however barely spending time in such an elegant, welcoming and comfortable hotel ambience after long days of meetings and events made me really want to come back and enjoy it fully. This is a quite big hotel with very professional and welcoming staff. From the hotel drivers who are always available to take you anywhere (I would suggest using hotel car as it is not terribly expensive and it gets charged to your room), they will wait for you if needed or come back for pick up timely. This is a must if you have tight schedules and places to be. Also, reachable by phone as I was concerned at first when one of the management who gave me number to call in case I needed earlier pick up from my meetings. Also, if you want to use a taxi, this hotel has taxis under their contract and they are readily available in front of the hotel and traceable by hotel instead of using any taxi in the city as the hotel also said they don't recommend it. The hotel itself is very clean, elegant and classic with a twist between old world style but with latest updates including bathrooms. The rooms come with everything, from great amenities, slippers, coffee and tea. They will bring you complimentary morning coffee with cookies if you request. The grounds are just impeccable with gorgeous gardens, large standout blue pool surrounded with plush green grass and just relaxing ambience. The afternoon high tea is a must. When you check-in, they will walk you to your room. Make sure to pay attention as there is this mezzanine floor that you get to by using the main elevator and then on another floor you switch to what they refer to as the library elevator. That's in case your room is on this "secret" floor. Definitely would recommend to visit.
"Conference in cape town"
The hotel is majestic in every way , classy and luxurious leave with a friendly team to match it all. The food is really exquisite and breakfast menu rich and varied. Only drawback is that the location is a bit far from the waterfront 10 minutes by car taking traffic into account
"Not Up to Expected Standards"
The public areas of the hotel are beautifully landscaped and generally lovely (despite the size of the place and labyrinth floor plan). The staff is friendly and helpful; breakfasts were wonderful. But, our room was very small; we found someone else's soiled underwear in a drawer; we had coffee and cups but no coffee maker; then the next day we had a coffee maker but no cups; there were other glitches. There was also a large business conference in progress. Generally disappointing given the reputation of the place.
