"Second visit, Amazing as always"
We came back to the Oberoi Bali with our two children last week of December for a week's stay through the new year. We loved the stay again - the place is very beautiful, location is very convenient, and the staff and service very good. Our two kids loved it, especially playing in the pool with many of the new friends they made during the stay. The GM John Halpin also hosted a wonderful evening reception by the beach, and we got to meet many members of the hotel senior team as well as many of the other guests at the hotel. I was stunned to meet an Australian couple who have been visiting the Oberoi Bali every year for the past 30 years, talk about loyalty. Many couples and families were repeat guests, and this highlights the strengths of the hotel and staff. We ate most of our meals at the hotel, the Eggs Benedict at breakfast was a clear favorite, as was the Mixed Satay grill at dinner. My wife and kids loved the Coconut Granita dessert, and they had it several times a day for every day of our stay. We took our kids to Ku De Ta, Starbucks Seminyak and Cafe Bali - they loved all three venues. We also spent time browsing the street market next door which was fun. Must Dos: Eggs Benedict, Satay Grill meal, Watermelon with Feta salad, Coconut Granita, and spend as much time in the pool or by the poolside overlooking the beach, especially in the evening
"Historic, deluxe accommodation, still going strong!!"
The oldest, 5 star deluxe hotel in Bali hasn't changed, even after 17 years since we last visited. The large keys to the room, the external walls made of jagged coral, the interior walls and ceilings lined with dark stained timber, the teak coloured furniture, bamboo chairs, premium cotton sheets, extremely comfortable beds, cold airconditioning, daily exotic fruit, two newspapers and the new, Australian news sheet delivered daily, uniformed and friendly staff. Gracious service and over the top security with a laid back lifestyle. No-one runs at the Oberoi Hotel, Bali, it is all efficiency with purpose, that is the key. We met our family from Japan and stayed for a week. The weather in February is hot and wet, so we ate all our delicious meals in the Kura Kura Restaurant, which was fabulous. Staff always addressed us by name, which was expected. We spent a few days at the swimming pool and noticed very few swimmers, which surprises me about negative comments about the size of the pool, when so few use it. The pool staff are super efficient, from the friendly lifeguard to the efficient waiting staff, we enjoyed our pool time immensely. It is important for customers to identify that the hotel is historic and the decor is antique. There is a resistance to unnecessary change, like there is no need to have airconditioning in the main restaurant, or the biggest swimming pool, or a helipad in the garden. This hotel is living history and you do well to embrace it. If I could make one suggestion, it would be nice to have a stronger Wifi connection, operation of the current system was spasmodic. There is a small gym is located within the excellent spa facilities, which my wife explained hadn't changed at all, except that the spa is tenanted now, rather than in-house managed. My wife used her own and my complimentary one hour massages, to effectively free-up her body aches and pains. She also had a foot massage on her last day which helped her greatly. We arranged both way airport transfers by the Oberoi Hotel for ourselves and our guests, which were highly efficient and worry free. Definitely worth the extra money for that. Arriving in the Hotel car, we were stopped at the entry gate and a security guard used a mirror under the car, to make sure it was not wired with an explosive device. At the same time, another guard opened the door and identified us as guests, before closing the door and allowing the car to pass the checkpoint. I am very happy with that level of security in today's Bali environment. Our clothes were washed by the Hotel and return both on hangers or boxed as per our requests. This is the level of service we expected. This stay was our fourth time in Bali and and our third time at the Oberoi. One thing we will say about our stay is that we noticed the service was inconsistent, when efficient senior staff took a day off, (which is not uncommon). We think that trainee staff in the Restaurant, need to be trained more before they wait tables. Supervisors need to be with them while they are pouring juice or coffee, to help them find out the correct method. One waitress made the same mistake day after day, until she got it right. In this restaurant, she should not have been serving customers until she was perfect, trainee or not. Some waiters got the order wrong and did not offer to change the meal or beverage and rectify their mistake. Keep the efficiency to the highest standard, and the Hotel will remain in the top ten. Highly recommended for travellers who appreciate the finer things of life.
We stayed here for 3 nights at the end of our trip through Java and loved every moment. It really was the little touches that made our stay great, particularly the complimentary afternoon tea and daily fruit box. Would definitely recommend!
"I was looking forward to this property.. but"
It is dated and could do with a refresh. It missed the Oberoi luxury feel. Resort is 37 years old and unfortunately you can tell. We made a mistake of not choosing W or any other newer properties. Everything in Oberoi was perfect and nice. The rooms need an upgrade. This is not an Oberoi Oberoi property if you're travelling from India. Don't advise for people booking this property just for Indian Vegetarian food. Other hotels have better options. Room 6/10 (They still use the manual key which is so bulky to carry) Service 8/10 Amenities 8/10 (Tried the pool, Spa, Gym and also played Lawn tennis) Location 10/10 (If you plan to shop, eat in and around Seminyak) Overpriced property only because of the location (beach front) and the Oberoi tag. Please look for other properties before you book this.
