"Irritatingly Pretentious - The GM doesn't care so why should I"
Let me get the positives out of the way first - the 360 Bar is excellent; the steam room in the villa was great; the shuttle bus to the beach ran on time (but see later comment); and a number of the staff tried hard to give good service...... Now the negatives - the car pick up at the airport was totally unsatisfactory. The car wasn't there when we arrived...I had to call the hotel and was asked to "wait a while...maybe 10 minutes"...20 minutes later I called again (the hotel didn't try to contact me even though they had my mobile number (they called me on it later in the stay) and I was asked to take my luggage several hundred meters away to where the driver was standing (because he couldn't find us) even though I told them my wife and I were standing at the domestic arrivals exit (and by that time we were pretty much on our own)...when we arrived at the hotel the General Manager hadn't been made aware of the issue (even though I told the nice lady on the phone that I wanted to speak to him) and he simply stood their gawping as I told him what happened (my wife told me later that apparently the lady who checked us in must have been the same one I spoke to on the phone and she was scowling at me when I told the GM what she had told me to do). We did overhear that apparently our driver had collected a different passenger. Later that afternoon the room service person arrived with a bottle of champagne "to apologise". When I declined this he very rudely asked "why'". I'm not sure how many apologies the General Manager had to deliver that day but given the pretentions the property has at personalised service I expected that he would visit us himself - I guess he didn't care enough. More negatives - the funicular (hillside tram) didn't work most of the time due to the complicated double door closure system which apparently most of our fellow guests couldn't work out, which disabled the system. The food at the Plantation Club restaurant was hit and miss (the western food marginally better than the asian food). The Residence Manager regaled and sometimes trapped several guests (it was obvious that they just wanted to get more food) at breakfast with her loud voice when all we wanted was...breakfast. The shuttle to the beach was Ok but we had to confirm three times that we wanted to be picked up at 3:45pm. The german speaking young gentleman at reception kindly created me as Mr Wong when I approach to book our return transportation to the airport - I've been mistaken for several actors before but never an oriental one! Would we stay here again - not for free! Too many irritations and too many other places to stay where presumably the senior management care about their guests.
"Romantic, relaxing, rejuvenating- an unbelievable experience"
Once you travel the 20-30 minutes taxi from the airport to the hotel, and drive up the serene driveway under the bamboos forming a tunnel, you know you've made the right choice. This is a 'WOW' hotel, and you'll never forget it. All the staff are genuine, helpful and friendly and addressed any questions courteously, efficiently and professionally. The service was excellent though-out our stay. ROOM: We stayed in the penthouse which is jaw droppingly beautiful. It comes with its own small pool (not heated, but the water is heated by the sunshine, and it is not cold). It has a large outside area, with a terrace, a sala and dining table, and 2 sun loungers. Inside is a large lounge area with a pre-loaded ipod with hundreds of tunes, coming out of a great sound system with speakers in the ceiling. There is an inside dining area, and stairs leading to the bedroom and balcony (with great views of the stars from your bed). There is an inside and outside shower and a his and hers sink, and a jacuzzi bathtub in the middle where you can watch TV from if you wish. The air con is great, as is the room service. You even have a spa/ massage room, and a large walk in wardrobe. You really feel like a superstar here. FOOD and DRINKS: There is a 360 bar which serves drinks including some fab cocktails (reasonably priced at about £5 each), and light bites from where you can see the sunset. There is a main restaurant and the food was always high quality and good value. The main restaurant was also the site for breakfast (open 6:30am to 11am). Here you can have champagne with your thai, english or european breakfast, accompanied with some great fresh juices and smoothies. There was a choice of some fresh fruit that included a whole mango, passion fruit, watermelon, papaya amongst others. You can order as much as you like. I once had 5 main courses (in my defence I had been to the gym before!). You get to see some great views from your elevated vantage point over Phuket, and can see the sea from some seats. It's a great way to start you day. At 1530 daily you have afternoon tea opposite the main restaurant, and this is really pleasant, where you have refillable tea, coffee accompanied by about 4 light bites. ACTIVITIES: You have a library on site which offers many english, french and german books. You can also get out DVDs from an extensive collection. We had a 15 minute foot massage and an hour full body massage (my wife had a thai massage which was highly recommended, and I had one where you get pummelled with a wooden hammer- not sure what I was thinking, it was certainly novel, but next time I'd go with a more relaxing and less painful thai massage I think!). The massages were delivered expertly and the staff were great. For a fee you can do a Thai cooking class which we highly recommend. It was a hands on experience where we learnt to do a Tom Kha Gai (chicken and coconut soup) and a Phad Thai Goong (Thai narrow noodles with shrimp). You of course get to eat what you created and then keep the recipe. You learn about the herbs and spices and the chef is very patient and helpful. It was well worth it. We also did the fruit carving class which was memorable and you get to keep a small carving knife. Although I was rubbish at it, with some practice you can impress your friends back at home. Again the staff teaching you are patient, friendly and excellent (it was a laid back and informal atmosphere). On our final day we had a thai seafood barbeque (other types of BBQ are available). You have the choice of doing it yourself or have a chef do it for you. It takes place on the terrace of your room. It was unforgettable. (You get a whole lobster, 2 big tiger prawns, 2 types of fish and 2 crabs, and 2 side dishes amongst others things- certainly filling and delicious). GYM: Good quality equipment. Open at 6am till late. Air conditioned. There was one running machine, a rowing machine, 2 cross trainers, some free weights, a couple of yoga mats and a gym ball, and some other weight lifting equipment. It was never busy, and more than adequate for what we needed. The place is geared for couples only, and the tag line is 'love is in the air'. It was peaceful and quiet and left you feeling utterly relaxed. We went through reception to book some excursions which included diving in Phi Phi islands (takes 2.5 hours from the hotel to the island via taxi and boat), and a trip to Pang Nga Bay (James Bond island) which takes 30 minutes or so in a taxi to the boat, and then another hour or so to the island (depending on how fast your boat goes; we were in a slow one). Both were day trips and highly recommended. We also went to Phuket town weekend night market which takes about 40 minutes, and the taxi price arranged from the hotel was 800 Bhat each way which seemed a bit steep, given that it only costs 300 Bhat (return) to get to the Siam Niramit cultural show which took around the same time. There is a free shuttle bus (about 10 minutes) to a nearby quiet beach if you wanted to go there. It was without doubt one of the best holiday experiences and one we will be talking about for years. Sensational.
"Pavilions may be my new favourite hotel in the World"
My wife and I spent five days at Pavilions in February 2016 while visiting with my son who is teaching at a school nearby. The hotel is about 25 minutes from Phuket airport and about a 5 minute drive to the nearest beach (Layan) Check-in was smooth and quick and handled with typical Thai charm and we were escorted to our villa.- a duplex spa and pool penthouse which was huge and gorgeous. 4500 sq ft of indoor and outdoor space with a spa room with two massage tables, the suite also contained three showers, one of which was outside and the outdoor space included a plunge pool and huge covered daybed. The comfortable king bed had high quality cotton sheets and excellent pillows with one large firm and one large soft one on each side. Breakfast was included in our room rate and was a combination buffet and substantial a la carte menu. The quality of the food was exceptionally high, particularly the pastries and the homemade yoghurt. We ate dinner in the restaurant on two evenings and were agin very satisfied with the range of offerings and excellent quality. There was both Thai and Western cuisine and both were made with excellent fresh ingredients and we enjoyed every one of the dozen or so dishes that we tried. Service was consistently excellent and charming, both at the restaurant and in every other aspect. While relatively expensive, we felt that Pavilions offered exceptional value for money, given the quality of the accommodation and food. The minibar prices were unusually reasonable and the restaurant was also good value. Pavilions is highly recommended for anyone looking for spectacular accommodation in Phuket
"THE BEST EXPERIENCE EVER - Penthouse Spa was AMAZING"
Decided to take an all girls trip to Phuket when we came across this hotel during our search. We were greeted with a sign and a beautiful car awaiting us with fresh fruit and clean towels in the car. When we arrived to the hotel we were greeted by the hotel manager who gave us a cocktail and some beautiful flowers. When we walked into the villa it took our breathe away. The private pool was a salt water pool, there was an outside shower, a jetted tub in the middle of the bathroom with an amazing view. We arranged for a 2.5hour spa and a five course private meal and both were amazing. The hotel reservation was great with planning the details and were always on time. I have traveled the world and to date this is the best location Ive visited. They provide free shuttles to the beach and amazing service.
First of all, it's not that far from neither Phuket town nor Patong beach. If you wake up early in the morning (and you should) then you'll have all the time you need for excursions, tours, activities and then some for your in-villa pool and relaxation. It's an excellent all-villa hotel with a matching level of service; don't let the location throw you off.
