The hotel has been refurbished since my last visit and looks spectacular as it was very tired before, had lunch in the garden room as the restaurant had been taken over by a convention even though I was directed there by reception who didn't appear to be aware that the general public couldn't eat in there at that particular time! Lunch however was delicious and very reasonably priced and I could happily have stayed there a lot longer than I did. Would definitely recommend it!
"Fantastic Short Stay"
The hotel itself is beautiful. A little haven of calm, while still being close to the city centre. Our room was beautiful, we had a wonderful view of York Minster. The amenities in the room were fantastic, and we loved the "tuck box". We would love to thank Harry on the reception. He was so professional and went above and beyond for us during our stay. Thank you Harry!
"Superbly located classic railway hotel"
The Principal York is a much upgraded railway hotel in a splendid old building offering views of York Minster. The rooms are well appointed, but it is important to know that not all of them are in the main building. Some are in a separate building which is connected by underground corridors and can involve a walk of more than 5 minutes to get to the dining room. The rooms in the main building are superior and some have views of the Minster. Breakfast is buffet style with cooked options that are prepared specially. The range and quality of food is very good. Lunch is also buffet style and good. We had a set dinner in a private room. This was good, but unexciting. Staff are helpful and courteous and wifi works well.
Service, room, food, etc was all outstanding. Walking distance to the Railroad Museum which was free. Also walking distance to the walled city section. Railway station is next door. Nice pool and hot tub. Rooms are were spacious. We were very pleased with that choice.
"An excellent hotel let down by its spa."
I stayed here for a few nights over Easter and it's a very beautifully refurbished, grand hotel with a comfortable bed, room and excellent bathroom. The service was good. The shower was bliss! The hotel is the old railway hotel - I could see trains from my bed! But it's very well insulated and glazed so I wasn't at all disturbed by noise - couldn't hear a thing. The Garden Room is very pleasant and I recommend it for tea or elevenses before the train. It's perfect for the train actually; you can just walk onto the platform when you leave. I thought the cooked breakfast was decent and worth paying for. I really enjoyed the scrambled eggs, the black pudding, and the earl grey prunes. Would have loved something a little special like devils on horseback with those delicious prunes. I got a deal on the room with dinner included and I would say the restaurant is not really worthwhile considering the number of properly good restaurants in very close walking distance. It's fine, but it's not great. It's very clangy and clashy, acoustically, service was very friendly but a bit slow, and the food is fine, but not great. I think this is really a very decent family restaurant and I think the family style "favourites" menu was better overall than the "kitchen" menu, having ordered from both. For fine dining walk two minutes into York. I ate my reasonable dinner and thought a bit longingly of the excellent lunch I had had round the corner. The swimming pool and sauna was not refurbished with the rest of the hotel. It's quite grotty and badly designed and you have to walk through the hotel lobby to get to it, so there's no ethereal floating around in dressing gowns going on. I really like to swim several times a day and having just been to a wonderful spa hotel in Iceland, I am probably setting my bar too high... but I would suggest at minimum replacing the dirty carpet on the way in. There's a magnificent Victorian tiled staircase down and then a mean little door, a dirty carpet, and a quite run-down, municipal style changing area and pool. The health suite is a small pool, one jacuzzi, one sauna and one steam room, no frills and no service! There were some plastic chairs at one end of the pool in a nod to relaxation, lol, but there were kids yelling and climbing all over them. The weaksauce showers took a bit of hammering to get them to work at all and all the lights went out several times while I was in the changing rooms. I didn't book any treatments having seen the facilities. I would say if you are looking for a spa hotel, this is not it, but otherwise the hotel is very good: great beds, great bathrooms, lots of nice touches. I will probably try the other spa hotel across the road next time.
