"'Mutton dressed a lamb!'"
Room was supposed to be ready from 3 p.m. We arrived at 3.45 to be told housekeeping had not yet prepared room. After hanging around the room was not available until nearly 4.39 p.m. We went for dinner in the hotel restaurant and were somewhat underwhelmed with both the choice and quality of food available. Additionally it was very expensive for a pretty average meal. On the plus side the bedroom was comfortable although the bathroom was so narrow it was difficult moving around without bashing into the walls. The internal decoration especially the staircase was very imposing and the public areas general tastefully decorated, although the lifts were totally inadequate for size of hotel. Breakfast was O.K. - a buffet arrangement . We were sat in a corner with tables so close together that we had to stand up to let people at our adjacent table get out. All in all not a wonderful stay, the hotel promised much but delivered little.
Very handy hotel for the station and visits to York centre. The room was well furnished and had nice touches like the tuck box with crisps etc (free), a smart TV and well appointed bathroom. The Spa does the job too, though the steam room was slightly temperamental. Would stay again.
Visited again and had lunch/afternoon tea in the garden room. Excellent helpful friendly service. Happy to put right any niggles, soup arrived lukewarm, but replaced instantly with apologies and grace. A beautiful setting and well thought out restoration. The food , simple and well executed with white linen and finesse. Feels very much like a London top end hotel. Will visit again and York also has much to offer.
"Luxury venue & exceptional service"
Everything about our stay at The Principal York exceeded expectation. We booked the garden room for afternoon tea following our wedding ceremony and we were not disappointed. We had a group of 27 and the service by Chantelle and her team was fantastic. The suite we stayed in for the weekend was huge, with views of the gardens and minster. The suite included a lounge, bedroom & bathroom. There was champagne chilled on arrival, a tuck box of sweets, mini fridge with fresh milk, water, chocolate hamper. The staff were very helpful and welcoming. The bar is called the chapter house is a great little bar especially if you like your Gin's and the food in the restaurant is also very good. Again the staff in both are very attentive and friendly.
"Fantastic 2 night stay"
Everything was spot on from the staff to the facilities. We got a free upgrade (room 349), without asking to a deluxe room which had a full on view of the Minster and hotel gardens which made the room even better! The room was compact but thoughtfully done and had everything you needed with ironing facilities, fridge, hairdryer, Elemis toiletries and a shower to die for, also had a box of sweets and crisps which you can replenish for free in the "tuck shop" in reception. The breakfast was superb with waiter service in the restaurant and we also had breakfast in the room which arrived dot on 10 AM as requested. The Chapter House bar was great and had entertainment on Friday with a duo singing acoustic covers and did it very well, there was also a selection of games to use if you wanted (cards, connect 4, chess, Jenga, also a foozball table), we also ate in there and the bar food was spot on! All in all, one of the best hotels we've stayed in and won't stay anywhere else when visiting York again!
