"Delightful old style elagance"
If you want to experience old style elegance with a great view of Central Park and a fantastic location, you have got to check out The Sherry-Netherland Hotel located on the corner of 59th St and 5th Ave. The ceiling in the lobby is reminiscent of either the Sistine Chapel or perhaps St. Patrick's Cathedral. The tin of candy in my room was a nice surprise as was the .complimentary set of toiletries I saw when I opened the cabinet in the bathroom. Also the complimentary soft drinks and water in the refrigerator was s very nice touch. The place has the feel of making you feel like an honored guest in someone's home. The helpful and friendly staff adds to this effect. I could have done without the 24 hour elevator operator which I thought was a needless expense. To say that this hotel is the best in the United States might be a bit of a stretch but it certainly provides a unique experience that everyone should have at least once in a lifetime.
"Great location and service"
We stayed for five nights. The staff was very friendly and made us feel welcome. Nice personal touch with chocolate every night. The room was surprisingly spacious. The great location, and it's a walking distance from many shops and attractions. Subway stations and bus stops are very close. Another nice personal touch is that the elevator is the old style with a friendly operator who remembered our floor. Our room was on the second floor, but the window was doubled up, and it worked well to shut the street noise out. However, the shade could only be opened half way, and it made the room a little dark. It probably depends on the room, but the decoration and some amenity of our room were a little outdated. This is an old hotel with old world charm like marble bathroom floor, but some of the furniture can use some updating to bring new life into it. Overall, a great experience, and we will stay here again.
"The Best Deal in Town"
We were invited to a wedding on Long Island but we didn't want to stay out there so we chose the Sherry-Netherland. We came in a few days early to enjoy the city. The location and price of the Sherry can't be beat. I didn't love everything about it, for example I thought that the hallways looked a little dingy and I commented afterwards about that; I think they were a bit taken aback because they had just had the hallways re-done. I just felt the colors were like somebody's grandma's house, kind of pinky-mauve and not my cup of tea; and I didn't go for the relatively dim hallway lighting; but it certainly wasn't a deal breaker. What I did like was the cool vintage lobby, the staff and the elevator guys who were pleasant and helpful albeit somewhat Soprano-esque, the Harry's bar/restaurant where I had a fabulous pasta (one of the best ever!) and just the location and convenience of the place. P.S., we had rented a car from another place to go to the wedding, but it ran late and we either had to leave the wedding early to return the car or keep it until the next day so we called and asked the guys at the Sherry, how much to park the car overnight' They said $85. Of course on the one hand, that is breathtakingly expensive. On the other hand, it was a huge convenience for us because it allowed us to be with our friends and stay at the wedding that we had traveled so far to attend.
"Great hotel and service, but..."
We loved the architecture and the staff gave amazing service. The room was beautifully decorated with antiques, but it could have used a coat of paint. Our only frustration was to see a $40 charge on our bill for a rollaway bed. After spending $800/night you think they would throw in the extra bed! Overall, it was a wonderful experience though.
"Will be staying again"
The Sherry-Netherland is as good as it gets in NYC, and that is made obvious as soon as you walk into the lobby and stand under the breathtaking fresco. We were absolutely beyond impressed with our city view room and its upscale modernity. The location is in a prime spot on 5th Ave right across from Central Park. We cannot thank the fantastic staff at the Sherry enough and look forward to staying at this exquisite hotel again.
