"One night away with wife"
Generally a good experience: room was upgraded for free, spa was adequate but in need of clean, room was fine with great views, breakfast kinda normal hotel standard. I struggle to see why it is 5 star.
"Good to be back!"
We stayed here about 6 years ago, and it was good to be back - this time for 2 nights. The hotel is in an excellent location, and the reception staff were so welcoming. Breakfast marvellous, and I must mention the lady who was responsible for running the breakfast area on both mornings of our stay - October 15th and 16th. She was polished, attentive, cool, calm and totally in charge. Long may she stay! We opted to eat in on the Saturday night, and the food was delicious. Our steaks were cooked exactly to order, and the portion size was just right. The wine, although slightly pricey was robust and warming, but our greatest shock was the post-dinner brandies. We ordered 2 ordinary Courvoisiers, and they were lovely - smooth and memorable. Only when we looked at the bill did we see that they were £15.50 each. My husband queried the bill, and explained that we had only had singles, not doubles. He was politely told that this was the price of the brandy. Next time, we'll be sure to ask for a drinks card so that we're aware of the spirits prices BEFORE ordering. Note to hotel - a drinks price card on all the tables in the bar would be a fairer way for customers to work out their evening's spend before ordering from the roving waiters. The high spot of the evening was definitely the live music, provided by two guys on guitars. Wow!! Even the original Django Reinhardt never sounded as good as this - but then, he did only play with 3 fingers... These guys had us toe-tapping all night long, and they were a pleasure to watch as they were obviously loving what they did. There seemed to be an unspoken bond between them, and when one started to play something, the other just sort of slid into the piece quite easily and comfortably. Nice one, guys! Please bring these two back - they're knockout! I tend to agree with some of the other reviewers who mention the fact that perhaps it is time to refurbish a little. There are signs of wear and tear throughout the building, as one would expect from an hotel of this age, but one also expects a little more attention to detail in a 5-star establishment. However, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and are looking forward to visit number three, which will hopefully coincide with a visit from two very good guitar players...
"A nice hotel but not 5 star. "
This hotel was very nice however it is not worth 5 stars. Upon arrival we were asked if we wanted to add breakfast to our booking, I explained that I was gluten free so asked if there would be lots of options available to me (did not want to pay £18 if I couldn't eat anything!) the woman at reception said I would need to find out and that we could let them know that evening - she didn't inform me who I needed to ask and in a 5* hotel I would expect her to know what is available or ask someone to contact me - not the other way round. Our room was a great size and the view from the balcony across the bay was spectacular. However the furniture was dated, the bathroom old and basic, the carpet very stained and the bedding ripped. Opposite our room was a staff only door, this was extremely scruffy and the floor outside it was filthy. I am not a fussy person and these small things wouldn't usually bother me but I think they are very important when in a 5* hotel. When housekeeping came to clean our room we were still getting ready so we told them they didn't need to. Later that day I asked a member of staff in the hallway if we could just have our bins changed she said yes however this was never done. The reason for 4 stars and not 3 is the spa. The spa is fantastic. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The facilities are lovely and clean and the refreshment lounge is a really nice touch with complimentary juice and fruit. Overall we had a lovely stay at this hotel however it is disappointing for the price you pay.
"GREAT LOCATION WITH GREAT STAFF"
would give 5 stars but our room on the 7th floor had great views but tne bathroom although clean looked very tired. Time for refurbishment' The staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant served well prepared high quality cuisine. Overall a good experience, would stay again but a bit of paint and some new ceramics in bathroom would give a very strong 5 stars
"Close but not quite there"
I visited the spa a number of years ago and it was lovely so we booked a trip for my partners birthday as we fancied a bit of luxury. We arrived to find out we had been upgraded to the deluxe double. The room was on the 3rd floor so there was a nice view of the bay. The room was a good size and very clean with lots of great finishing touches to make the stay comfortable. The only down side was the coffee making facilities (although we are slight coffee snobs) the coffee in the room tasted awful so we requested the complimentary fresh coffee but sadly this wasnt much better and was very watery although the fact it was free was a bonus. We found the front desk staff, the concierge and the spa staff we all very helpful and polite and nothing seemed too much trouble. The conceirge Chris deserves acknowledgement as he was extremely observant and attentive. A few of the members of the bar wait staff weren't quite so attentive with one male waiter standing around ignoring the fact we(and others) were waiting to order and had been for some time, we ended up going to the bar and doing it ourselves. It's possible he was new as he seemed quite nervous. The food however was great. We used the spa facilities, I had a facial and massage which were lovely. The spa facilities were very relaxing but a fresh lick of paint and the replacing of some dead bulbs would really help to finish off the relaxing image. Sadly we were awoken at 3.30am and kept awake for some time by the unruly guests (along with several visitors) next door. This isn't a fault of the hotel as they can't be responsible for the behaviour of the guests but it spoilt the relaxing weekend we had had and left us keen to leave in the morning. The breakfast was great! Perfect way to finish off our stay. Considering the cost of the room was just under £300 for a night it was disappointing to see a £15 charge for parking was then added in top. Whilst the hotel is nice it certainly doesnt feel like a 5* and expereince is not reflected in the high cost.
