"Not really five stars"
Don't get me wrong, it is a nice hotel in a fantastic area with lots to do very nearby. Not far from Cardiff bay train station at all. Even on the first floor the views are lovely. But I have to agree with the reviews on here. Incredibly dated and tired in my room. Broken tiles on the bathroom floor. Duvet insides separating into clumps through out it. Pillows pretty much dead so I gave up and used my coat. Two singles pushed together is not a king size bed as it means you can't really move around asleep at night as you feel like you are going to fall through the middle. It's like a lumpy rock too. Shower was very poor in its power too. Also, hoovering right outside bedrooms at just before 8am when you don't have to check out till 11am' This was not appreciated. Breakfast was nice but again not five stars. Although luke warm. It was good to have options though. Evening food was great and thoroughly enjoyed this though. I have to give my thanks to all the staff I encountered as their service was incredible. Very friendly.
"Great choice if you don't mind being 15 mins from city centre"
Have stayed here several times and now out of the hotels in Cardiff I have stayed in Cardiff (we have stayed at Park Plaza, Marriott, Jolyon’s Number 10,Jurys Inn, the Royal over the last few years) this would be our preferred choice. Rooms are comfortable (although not huge), and it is nice to be away from the main mayhem of the city on a rugby weekend, and it has the added benefit of a decent swimming pool and spa. We stayed there last weekend for the rugby, probably my 5th stay there, and were just unfortunate to be in a noisy room near a lift shaft (713) which kept us awake both nights – and our guests too (room 710). We are there again in a few weeks and have asked just to be away from the lift area. Lunch in Tides is good – an excellent steak and chips. Breakfast OK, bored of it after two days but nothing wrong with it. Bar in the evening can be fun – we have been in there when there is live music. Ten minute walk into Cardiff Bay for bars and restaurants. Parking is available at £15 per night and each room has a balcony. In general it is not far off needing a major refresh, (bathrooms/balconies) but for us, for now, it is a great place to stay.
"Not really 5 stars"
I had great hopes for this hotel, and the view from the room was definitely met. Absolutely lovely view from the big windows, you cannot beat that. The location is nice, close to some restaurants and interesting buildings such as the parliament. Other than that, this is not really a five star hotel. Our room was spacious but run down (maybe others have been renovated). The bathroom was very old fashioned and could have been cleaner. The carpet had stains and the fixtures were extremely old. The bed was comfy, though. The hotel has obviously seen better days. The architecture is nice, but there is a strong smell of chlorine in the reception and restaurant (I assume from the spa). Breakfast is adequate but, again, not 5 star level, and the smell makes it quite unpleasant. Service is good, though. Everybody was nice and helpful, you could not fault them. With the great location and the nice service they really need to step up on the facilities for the price they charge.
"King sized con"
Pushing two single beds together and calling it a King room' I don't think so. To make matters worse, the inefficient AirCon meant I was unable to get temp below23c overnight - way too hot. Not worth the money.
